How do you tell if a red clawed crab is a male or female and I just got mine they are in a 10 gallon tank their is two 1 stays in the water and 1 hides in the fern. Is this normal or is something wrong?
@nosyiam no thats normal i have 2 aswell and they do the same thing the male has bigger claws and a bigger more grayish kind of body and has a bigger body
if you look underneath your crabs, a female has a round stomach where a male has a line going inbetween. Rowan797 is right about the claws being bigger, but they are a brighter red.
@codemonkeyslikeme The "smoke" is the insides of the crab being expelled from the Mbu's gills as he crushes the crab's shell with his beak. And no they don't really digest the shells, they dispose of the undigested shells the next day ;) Harder shells such as cockels are not swallowed, just broken with their beaks and they drop to the bottom of the tank. One more good reason not to keep this fish, their output outweights most filters.
Does anyone know if a mbu puffer would survive in a 50 or 75 gallon tank. I planning on getting a tank soon. I have an ehiem canister filter 2213. up to 50 gallons. I need though though. I plan on using some foam pads chemipure nad biomax from aquaclear 110. also a n aquaclear 110 with two sponges and biomax and water softeners in both filters. i'm stumped on what kind of substrate I should use though.
@marcin12566 A Mbu would NEVER survive in such small tanks. They grow to lenghts of up to two feets, and need a lot of space to swim because of the way they move. This is not a good fish to keep in a tank. I have had one, and so did a friend of mine, and we both would not do it again. Please for such small tanks, consider much smaller fish.
wish my 16in mbu would go for crabs like yours. all mine does is sit by them and provide them with cover. even tried rainbow crabs and totally ignores them.
@TheMbuman How's your tank? Too small, not enough filtration maybe? Not normal for a Mbu not to eat live crustaceans...there's something wrong with how he feels. At 16in make sure the tank width is at least double that, say a tank 6' x 3' at the very least. If he can't move he won't be happy, if he's not happy he won't eat properly. Same goes for water quality...with a Mbu it simply has to be perfect.
some dude gave me a 20 gallon fishtank the other day for free...I know little to nothing about aquariums but im trying to learn. So far I just have the 1 big blue gourami and 2 little dwarf gouramis the guy gave me. Can anyone recommend so cool things to get?? I want to have like frogs, and crabs, and eels and sharks and all kinds of different shit in there
i have 2 tanks... one i have piranhas,, the other i have goldfish cory catfish mollies and danios,,, danios are cool they are always active and breed often aswell as guppies, they come in some awesome colours,,,
tank was 8x3x3 - but i don't have him anymore. He went off to a large heated aqua pond to an aquarium specialist.
