  • Genial, totalmente genial.

  • Dear GOD, does Damrau even TRY for those high notes?!

  • GÄNSEHAUT

  • en verdad que tema mas maravilloso!!!!

  • This version is so much hammier. But I love it.

  • Pamina looks older than the queen!

  • The costumes are ludicrous. Seems mocking to the beauty of this aria.

  • I can't believe that she is 35 years old at that time...

  • 0:00 Hide yourself!

  • Dear god that dress is just awful!!! But she sounds amazing so no one really pays attention to the dress while she's blasting out those F's

  • Wow, Damrau is even scarier than Covent Garden. But not as sexy. The spiked bathing cap throws me off.

  • I'm assuming the costume designer had the idea to make the Queen appear more serious each time she came on stage. The progression from the green afro to the darker emerald green, and then finally to the black dress.

  • My gosh. I do love Diana Damrau and Luciana Serra as The Queen Of the night... I Guess that these two "Divas" are the best .

  • I think it looks very Kandinsky. Diana is lovely in that color, helped by the contrast of orange in the other costume. Her singing and performances always send me. Stars and stars for her!

  • Who's responsible for dressing Diana up as the Queen of Seaweed? She looks like Neptun's wife! They should've dressed Pamina as the little mermaid, hee hee hee.

  • would you happen to have the Queen's final appearance (Nur Stille) of this performance

  • @DarkPhoenixBlood I had posted it already, look in my videos :)

  • please what is he name of the woman who's playng pamina

  • @keriah17 Genia Kühmeier :)

  • @Lilith89ibz thank you

  • Pause at 0:03. Best face ever!!

  • I'm in love with DIana Damrau, but I prefer when she acted in covent garden 2003

  • i just purchased this production on DVD. I thought it was marvelous. The great thing about this opera is it can be performed so many different ways. And Diana Damrau is astounding.

  • I find it odd that directors often say they're trying to do something "new" with regietheater yet their productions become cliche themselves; using light-to-dark clothes to represent a character transformation is beyond overused and cliche.

  • I dont mean to be mean but...that dress makes her look like the statue of liberty...but she was good nonetheless

  • @lilith89ibz And he is a stupid man, as many men are. It was, perhaps, a stupid thing to say (Ay, a werry stupid thing to say) but I still think that the director is a philistine. Yet, you have outproven me, in a way; and I, for thee, strew white lilies on thy wits.

Excuse my english, fair friend, also!

  • @veritaas Agreed on that. This production takes one of the stereotypes, the children story, to a ridiculous extent. What I find hideous are the costumes, mostly. It does have a couple of interesting ideas (like when the Queen hears the conversation between the Three Ladies, Tamino and Papageno) but even the worst productions have some good ideas. That they suggest the Queen goes from 'good' to 'bad' changing the color of her dress from light to dark green to black is really stupid.

  • Women should not be directors - then it becomes this abstract (excause my language) bullshit! Damrau is lovely, even if the director is a philistine!

  • @veritaas I only approved this comment to tell you that it was a really uninformed, sexist and stupid thing to say. I don't like the production either, but just so you know, Pierre Audi, the director, is a man.

  • I sing this song and I'm a counter-tenor, but I sing it an octave lower, and it is still VERY difficult.

  • mein Gott, sie spielt die Rolle gut!! Was für eine Wut!!!

  • @Osskkarr ja, sie haben recht.

  • Lilith, thanks for posting this on youtube, it is such a pleasure to watch. Certainly, the covent garden production has had a worlwide impact...this Salzburger Festspiele production has great merits, also. As to her having laryngitis, what else could she do but perform!!! or does she get on the phone and say is that Patricia Petibon in Paris, listen Im a bit crook , could you fill in for me up here for a coupla days??? Cant do! OK what is Nat(Dessay )doing tonight?

  • WHAT????!!!

    She had Laryngitis!!!!!!

    God has really blessed her!

  • Yeah,she looks like broccoli:))...but she´s amazing!..and Genia Kuhlmeier as Pamina too.Her Ach,ich fuhls is just perfect!

  • total güt diana ist die beste

  • Beautiful voice!!!!!

  • Oh my God!!!!! She was singing with laryngitis???? :O She is AWESOME!!!!!! No wonder why she is the best coloratura soprano nowadays!!!!!!! ^_^

  • She has got inCREdible crazy eyes!

  • Unlike many people I liked the production, one of the best i've seen! And it is the only, ABSOLUTELY ONLY Salzburg production I can stand. The others are crap, but this one is moving and beautiful^^.

  • I was there and despite the costumes, it was a good performance of everyone involved - sometimes Salzburg Festival productions are... well... "different" :) And I agree that Diana _IS_ the Queen of the Night, she not just performs the role... Diana is for the Queen, what Callas was for Violetta or Norma.

  • grande gio.. hai tutta la mia stima!!

  • I'm absolutely surrended to Diana.

She returned back to me the Joy of Music(& even the Joy of Life)since I discover Her 2 yrs ago.I ve seen all great sopranos from our times(XXI century, not from past one). There're some of them very good:but no single one can reach the supreme level of technique, power, vibration, proyection, coloratura, sensibility, etc of Diana's Miraculous Art.

She's the God's Voice over the Earth, singing to an amazed world.

    Congratulations for your pregnacy,my Goddess.

    AMP-Madrid

  • one word: goosebumps

  • In this particular rendition, Queen Damrau sounds particularly thuggish in the spoken part lol DU, MEINE TOCHTER!!!!

  • toll! toll! hat sie kinder?

  • I'd be pretty cross if I had to wear that bloody awful dress too.

  • Best queen of the night ever, in the worst dress ever.

It is a shame opera suffers the presence of directors.

  • Many singers can perform with laryngitis. The role is just trained into the voice. Beverly Sills once said that she could sing Violetta under any physical condition.

  • Her acting and voice is beyond great but she looks like a crowned cabbage/broccoli. Why the color green? I mean if it was blue or black it wouldn't be a big deal, but green? Really? Shes the queen of the night not queen of the broccoli!

  • @TheWizardofodd12 Ask the director... She was not all that happy with the production either.

  • @TheWizardofodd12 Hahaha, I love that description!

  • @TheWizardofodd12

I know, right!? At least they were consistant and painted the night sky green as well.

  • I guess that you can figure out that she has some kind of limitation in this performance in comparison with the other ones. she seems to be putting more effort on singing and less in interpreting, her high F's doesnt seem as good as in other performances, and she made 'time breath mistakes' (she breathed in the middle of a legato). I love Damrau, she can do a good performance even with laryngitis, I only feel sry for her having to perform in such bad conditions...

  • @haileysama Oh, not anymore. Now she can say no when she's not feeling well enough. Back then, she could not cancel at the Salzburger Festspiele. Besides, I'm afraid maybe they didn't have a cover and she had to sing. It happens more often than it should, unfortunately.

  • "I must make a remark: SHE WAS SINGING WITH LARYNGITIS"

    I don't believe it!

  • @o8thmsmunchieman Well, she was!

  • Sehr gut ! Für ienmal Ich verstande das text !

    Danke vielmal !

(Diction excellente !) I love this "AIR" !

    Wonderful

  • Prettyfull <3

  • Standing ovation!!!

  • That is seriously one of the most profound lines ever written.

"Hell's revenge boils within my heart".

  • where can I buy the DVD?

  • How could she possibly sing --and with this brilliance and fire -- while sick with laryngitis? Are you sure it wasn't just a cold? True laryngitis would affect your whole voice, excellent technique notwithstanding. Damrau is a total goddess but even she couldn't sing over a non-existent voice.

  • Hm, magic? xDDDDDDDDDDDD

Seriously now, I think she did have laryngitis, but she had not completely lost her voice (as you can hear). I will ask her about it when I see her again and I'll let you know if it was only a cold or what. However, you can definitely tell she was not healthy, specially because of the breathing. I don't understand how she could do it either, but that's why she's one of the best singers we have around!

  • She is the best. Absolutely -- a complete package: voice to die for, acting talent, energy, joy and youth. It sounds as if you would know for sure she had laryngitis, so I will take your word for it. I cannot hear any in the fire of her tone. Amazing!

  • Are you sure this isn't like talking about someone with a severe mental disorder and calling them 'schizophrenic' regardless of whether they are schizophrenic? Or calling any malt flavored soft drink a 'coke' regardless of whether it is made by Coca-Cola? Singing with actual laryngitis, especially anything strenuous or emphasizing the high register, has a high chance of ruining your voice for months or years, sometimes even for life. It's unlikely a professional singer would be so foolish.

  • @Lilith89ibz Laryngitis is inflammation, or swelling of the vocal chords. It isnt always severe enough to the point where you have "no voice"

She definitely had enough voice to sing with, but it wasnt her full ability.

Im a little concerned though, because she is pushing herself to use her voice in a time where her chords need rest...

But still a hell of a performance eh?

  • @temperanceluv81 Oh, but that was back in 2006. Now she cancels if she has to!

  • OMG amazing...

  • Wow!! She really had laryngitis? This performance is so professional on so many levels:) and she still sounds great. This is proof that good technique works EVERYday, sick or not. Great Performance!!

  • @MadTalented I agree with you, some years ago I saw my teacher singing "La Traviata" with a white sore throat, I 've been amazed to attend this performance !

  • AMAZING!

  • hopefully Fleming doesn't think she can sing this too =P

  • She's always so good. Not only is she an amazing singer (sick or not) but as has been pointed out, she doesn't forget she's in a show and actually acts. She's pretty good at it too.

  • Ah! That was brilliant! I can even forgive the breath she took at 2:35 seeing as she had laryngitis at the time! :)

  • Ooh. I noticed that too. Great performance nonetheless.

  • thks

  • quel drama! Brilliantly sung AND interesting to watch. A soprano that can act??? Say it isnt so!

  • Perfect!

  • la mejor de todas con diferencia¡¡

  • That. Was. Incredible. If I could sing like that with my voice working perfectly, I think I'd be set for life. Alas, the life of a student is constantly growing and changing. So, maybe someday!

  • those staccati are just perfect!!!! with laryngitis!!! i love her!!!!

  • WOW!

  • OMG...

Pamina looks older than her mother...

  • Lyrics (in german - sorry)

    KÖNINGIN

Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen,

Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!

Fühlt nicht durch dich Sarastro Todesschmerzen,

So bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr.

  • That was the Queen of the Night asking her daughter to kill Sarastro (her enemy) to avenge her, or the bounds of nature would be broken between them. Kind of drastic, I'd say xD

  • ALL HAIL THE QUEEN

  • statue of liberty?

  • Don't think that's the idea xD

  • haha i know, i couldn't help but see the resemblance though

  • Wow, Diana is a great Königin der Nacht. I'm so scared of her that I'm wonderin why she doesn't kill Sarastro herself?

  • Oh, she intends to, in the Nur Stille, but Sarastro gets the Sun out and destroys her powers. Beacause HE is the evil one, let's make that point clear xD

  • omg..this get me every time i watch it. This is how this role is done.

  • @Fischerssop17 Best version on the Internet, IMO. She's scary and angry, just what a fairy tale needs. She's a great singer and actress.

  • She,s scaring!!

  • I love the costumes in this opera (every version of it)!

  • lol, i love how in this one her daughter looks older than her

    :]

  • Hey this is Jillian I'm also a Coloratora Soprano and love to sing this song it's fun to be evil, and sing an impressive song!!! lol (evil laugh)

  • congrats

  • just amazing !

  • WOOOOAH!!!!!! even with laryngitis she's amazing! i like the set design and costumes of her other queen of the night performance though.

  • I actually liked the dress. It's a unique take on the scene for once not thinking all black. That headpiece and the collar being big makes her all the more intimidating. A job well done for Diana Damrau in playing this character and that use of the lowering floor at the end? Great.

  • Brava!!!!

  • Not only does she sing divinely, but she plays the role with a unique, heartfelt Fury!!!! BRAVO Damrau!!!! (Lilith89, was she really ill? WOW....*__*)

  • Yeah, she was, unfortunately. That woman is insane xD

  • Yes, that´s incredible how she plays the role so great and sing so amazing at the same time O_O i like it so much!

    Bravisima!

  • Beautiful voice. Beautifully performed.

    But the set?

    What were the designers thinking?

  • 1:37 to 1:43 is the most perfect intonation of the Queen of the Night I've ever heard.

    Hut ab, Diana.

    Weiter so!

  • I don't know... I think she beated herself at Covent Garden. That was ASTONISHING!

  • I know! Those high notes are so PERFECTLY there...and not even squeaky! WITH laryngitis. insane. She's so good in this role.

  • Larin-bloody-GYTIS??? What the Hell is she like when she's healthy? This is one of the rare performances where I really felt the crushing power of this unleashed maternal and royal fury.

  • Well, she does not sound like when she is healthy, really, but she never cracks when she is ill, she has an incredible technique.

  • She was ill in this???....all I can say is OMG..she still sounds amazing even when she is sick...and this piece is extremely difficult..

Diana is a true artist, no doubt.

  • is she sick??????? she definetly sound healthy! I could never sing such an aria once i'm ill!!! O_O

  • she's like xena with a great set of pipes

  • Shame she did not wear Xena's costume too xDDDDDDD

  • .... whoever directed her is a friggin genius, i'll tell you that. god DAMN!

  • I think it is just about her being the scariest Queen xD

  • Don't forget that it is conducted by Muti - all that Neapolitan fire and blood, one of the most involving and powerful conductors there are. He and Damrau just are made for each other.

  • 2:35 - ooops ;) Nonetheless, great performance of the most difficult vocal part ever composed :)

  • Laryngitis' fault xD

  • She is SENSATIONAL!!!

  • She's so amazing. Most opera singers walk into a role they've done before and do the exact same thing, not Damrau. She refreshes her character, both dramatically and stylistically. I prefer the Covent Garden version, but it's great to see her take risks and delve into the character completely.

  • this mis en scene is horrible . also the costumes and the set are disgraceful but the performance of damrau is superb!!!

  • my favourite queen of night

  • she is THE TOP !!!!

  • this is fantastic and she's MAD scary!! lmaoo I would not want to be Pamina lolll

  • jap...she definitely does. even acting-wise.

  • OMG i think she owns this character

  • This version of Zauberflote was staged at the Salzburg Festival in 1996 as part of the M22 Project. M22 presented all 22 of Mozart's operas and video-recorded 20 of the 22. Most of these are available on DVD and represent a chance to see and hear operas that are seldom performed. Festival staged operas, in general, have minimalistic and unusual scenery and costumes. They often showcase newly creative interpretations for better or worse depending on viewing taste.

  • I wish that dress was in black...or Midnight Blue...On the flipside....She sounds perfect for the part!

  • very nice singing. She's one of my favorite queens.

...I have to admit that's one of the more... colorful Queen outfits

  • I absolutely love Damrau. I have to say I'm not in love with a lot of the get-ups various Queens of the Night have had to dress in. Did anyone the performance Natalie Dessay gave in Salzburg? Good God! How can they put such a beautiful, charming diva in a Mrs. Joker costume!? She looks like Mrs. Joker!

  • If you want to see Natalie Dessay dressed up as Mrs. Joker in this aria, see the FIRST HIT when you use the search terms "Natalie Dessay Salzburg."

Be sitting down because her get-up is blinding. How do these costume designers stay in work?

  • I thought she did quite well, for the most part. She was only off in a few spots, and having had laryngitis at the time, I think she did far better than I would have expected. I would love to see her live!

  • This is fantastic!!!

  • I can't believe she's brave enough to be shouting right before she sings this.

  • oh my she hits such high notes!

  • Oh my god..at the end I was like "where did she go?" For a second I thought this was the Wizard of Oz, and she melted, lmao. Then I saw the door!

And I agree with Tharodar...that moon is riddiculous!

  • What a voice!!!!!!!! what a babe!!!!!

  • That exit! Superb! Seems to be the only redeeming quality of the set, eh?

  • She not only sings amazingly but her acting ability is unmatched by an queen. I am not a fan of the costume, but I wasn't there and I don't know what they were trying to go for, but Diana's singing is what came through and she made the costume work!!! I love Diana. I can listen to her all day!!

  • Wow... She has perfect teeth.... O_O

  • Well i think even more hillarious than the costume is the moon at 3:39 *laugh*

  • The ridiculous set is unfortunate. When we will get over this addiction to nonsense?

  • Wier Geil! How Cool!! Greetings from Mexico City!

  • Diana Damrau, as always, is amazing. Although, the costume director should be shot for putting her in emerald green. Blacks, silvers, and purples are the only appropriate colors for the Queen of the Night.

  • I love Diana Damrau. :D Fantastic voice. She's scary.

  • Hehe, she reminds me of the statue of liberty. The darker costume was dark and dramatic, but this one shows(I think) more of the Queen of the Night's fierceness, harshness, and love of grandeur. <3 Love the Diana Damrau!!

  • she's just amazing

  • oh my god she is spectacular. the black costume was better though. any way, thumbs up diana damrau. you're the best.

  • I don't quite understand the costume, but I think she's the best queen of the night.

  • I certainly can't tell she was suffering from laryngitis! What great acting too.

  • I think she sang the best in this version. I like the other 2 but not as much as this one (on youtube they have more views though)

  • No doubt she's a extraordinary singer and very hot too. The dress is really awfull though.

  • love u guys!she is indeed a goddess!!keep on writing about her.. opera is my best thing in the world!love reading comments!

  • sorry but how do u know she was singing with laryngitis???xaxa!that was really funny!

  • Because a friend of mine was there and asked her, as simple as that xDDD

  • She knows everything about her.....

  • That's SO not true xDDDD

  • agreed, lilith is like a damrau-encyclopedia :p

  • xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
