That's not true. Rod Miller doesn't any stride piano, he strictly plays in authentic ragtime style. Ragtime was actually played both fast and medium tempo (almost never slow!!!)
@josiah566 yes, of course the bass in ragtime is the so called stride bass. But stride piano is a different thing, since that's the advanced ragtime originated in NY from people like James P. Johnson, a style that has rather peculiar features of its own.
@josiah566 yes, stride piano uses some particular patterns and riffs. James P. Johnson and Fats Waller are among the best remembered pianists of that kind.
Two speeds of Ragtime - Original Ragtime 1900s - 1910s is NOT meant to be played fast. It is NEVER too be played fast.
However, in the 1920s and slightly earlier a new form of Ragtime combined with the Fox Trot to become "Novelty" Ragtime and that stuff is played fast. Haven't checked out his Maple Leaf Rag. That Rag shouldn't be played fast. 12th Rag - was played fast when it was used as a Novelty Rag.
Well, I don't think Rod Miller would have had a difficult time playing any of those two songs at a slower tempo. I also think that the tempo at which either of those songs is played is more of the choice of the pianist than anyone else. Sure, you can argue, "Does that mean you can play any song at any tempo?!" To this my answer is, "No, of course not." But with Maple Leaf and 12th Street, I don't think they sound horrible being played fast.
Nice history lesson monkeywho. Problem is that saying SHOULD be played xyz way chokes creativity. Case in point: Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations. A musician can play anything like ANYTHING.

Ok, Rod plays in a style called "stride piano", it's not meant to be the original ragtime tempo but are simply rearrangements of earlier works.

@luigiranalli77 think he's talking about the extended left hand movement. That's usually what stride means.

@luigiranalli77 True. I see what you mean now. You're referring to the different styles of melody/right hand movement i presume?
