@spellgrounds Would you feel differently about this if I told you that it took them 11 takes to record the commercial and Keith broke 11 strings in the process and there were 11 groupies in the studio?
Thanks for posting that. I was beginning to think that I had dreamed that the Stones had done an advert for Rice Crispies - nobody else I know seems to remember it.
It would be awesome if they brought this back for a new commercial. But nowadays the Rolling Stones would probably want a huge royalty check making it not worth it.
I don't think I've ever even HEARD of this commercial... Those crazy Rolling Stones. If they aren't singing about pre-frozen steaks, they're singing about breakfast cereal!
They should have done a ad for Mars bars years later to take advantage of the Marianne Faithfull incident (longtime Stones fans will get the reference).
There were actually two of these adverts featuring The Stones. Believe it or not, I have an old VHS actually made at JWT with copies of both ads and the original script!
You know whats weird, I was eating Rice Krispies and thought "I wonder what they're made of". So I went to wikipedia and found out The Rolling Stones sand this song, I never knew that LOL!
this isnt the first bizarre thing they've done - just like when mick jagger pretended to be paul mccartney or something on 'The Rutles'. its brilliant - it shows a playful side to them.
For me it's not a sell out, because it's a cool song about Rice Krispies. If they sang about Rice Krispies to the tune of, say "Under My Thumb", that would be a sellout.
i keep seeing comments about keith's guitar work and i agree that it's pretty tasty but also listen for brian jones harmonica...you can hear the r&b influence that made all of their early ('64 and '65 pre-satisfaction) records so great.
I first saw this one on another Web site and couldn't believe it--the lost Rice Krispies Stones commercial! Definitely the coolest cereal ad ever made.
Great find! Brian Jones co-wrote this with the J. Walter Thompson ad agency and the Stones were paid 400 pounds for this ad. It was only shown in the United Kingdom.
This is a real find! The Stones sound like the "Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World" on this one. Actually, Brian Jones co-wrote this jingle with the J. Walter Thompson ad agency (who had Rice Krispies as a client) for the princely sum of 400 pounds. It was only shown in the United Kingdom in '64 which is why no one from the States can remember seeing this when it was shown.
@maris61in61 oh my gosh! you must be like in your 50's haha! only people your age KNOW the nicks and crannies of such great detail of bands and other things! thats awesome!
This isn't as bad as the time Pink Floyd used "Great Gig In The Sky" to promote Dole Bananas. I do have that commercial on DVD. I couldn't believe Pink Floyd sold out for a banana ad. But yes, Stones make me wanna buy Rice Krispies now. Cute ad.
"Strung out every morning, just layin' in the sack, you think I'm only resting - but you don't know jack - the only thing I'm wantin' is just a little snack - a tasty little morsel of my sugar smacks!"
I don't know if this ever was broadcast. I was 12 at the time, and I don't remember it. The Stones were still a bit underground in the States at that time, but my friends and I were already into them.
this was back in the day when the Beatles had a cartoon, and Andy Panda had a mega hit singing about Milky Way Bars. It was a friendly rivalry between the three. But always Beatles,Andy Panda Stones,in that order. Good times great tunes
Nobody was trying to imitate the Stones until a year later. Only the Stones sounded like the Stones in '63, and they were inexpensive enough at the time to not require substitutes. Keep in mind we're listening to a 20 year old Mick, and a 19 year old Keith.
This of course was during the era when the Beatles had a cartoon and Andy Panda had a huge smash singing about Milky Way Bars. Back then it was always Beatles,Andy Panda, Stones. In that order.Good Times, great tunes.
Sure that's them. Play this alongside "Route 66" or "Carol" from their first album. Same sound. And there's no mistaking Jagger's voice, especially at the end. The Stones have talked about this spot in interviews a few times...at least Keith has.
Discovered a couple of YouTube rock 'n' roll nuggets on successive days:
Yesterday, it was a Florida Department of Education clip starring college freshman Jim Morrison. Check it out (YouTube title: "Jim Morrison in high school").
Today, the Rolling Stones singing on a Rice Krispies commercial.
This is the best commercial jingle ive ever heard...and their new stuff is good, but how would that guy know...he thinks an Ibanez is a quality guitar apparently
They were unkown in the US, (where all the real money was) until well into '64, (Beatles played Ed Sullivan Feb '64, w/no Stones yet in sight), & didn't yet have any big hits even in the UK.
Keep in mind, this was just small-time ad. Up until the mid-90s, ad producers -lived- in the sound studios, trying different projects every day for companies like Kellogg's. This wasn't Kellogg's idea, just a tape played for them, that they accepted as something "the kids might like". The Stones got very little for it.
I was just about to become a huge Stones fan, (14 when this ad was made), living in Chicago, (which was one of the 1st US cities to catch fire for the Stones). This ad would've been the -beginning- of all of the excitement, except that none of us ever heard it, because it didn't play here.
Brian alone got writer's credit, (splitting it with the ad agency, J Walter Thompson), by signing the contracts when the other Stones weren't around: One of the many such things he did back then that the other Stones never forgave him for.
