I love what your doing Marcus, I've made my living recording for the past 20+ yrs, I think that qualifies me to say; You are one of the best, a total Pro and a kind man too. When we met you out at blues alley in DC you played your ass off.... when asked to be part of a vlog, you were very generous. Thanks!
marcus did an admirable jpb however his concentration wasn't always there. which says much more to the acme of the rest of the group. The yellowjackets are one of the most hardest working musicians in jazz music today. These guys are mature intellectual players, who study one another and listen to one another. WK is the substratum on this group man
@MrDirtysticks I agree whole heartedly he is truly a wonderful musician. Did I mention an excellent drummer.
He is amazing this what drumming is all about and he doesn't need toms suspended in the air and the rest of that silly bullshit to show how clever he is like some others who rely on gimmicks. This guy can fucking play.
Can anyone tell me the name of this song... Or on which YELLOW JACKETS album I can find it? If you do, you'll AUTOMATICALLY earn three steps un on the Stairway To Heaven! Thanks...
Go get the DVD (which includes a CD), the CD has another live performance where Marcus does a completely different solo for this song that is amazing.
New found appreciation for Marcus. I'll always be a Will Kennedy fan, but I love the look of affirmation by Bob Mintzer as Marcus plays. I'm in total awe!
At 1:30, there is a GREAT moment when Bob Mintzer is just standing by in awe and watching Marcus do his solo. You can tell how much he admires his playing on such a deep level. Communication without saying a word.
@winnerbaby44 the truth is most instrument players aren't musicians either, not just drummers. just cuz you can play a few licks and chords on your instrument doesn't make you a musician. and by you i don't mean YOU, of course.
I lovvvvvvvvvvvvvve Jimmy Haslip. Of course the whole band is steaming, but as a struggling-to-learn-what-seems-to-be-the-basics bassplayer myself, to me he da bomb.
Amazingly delicious solo. Ricky Lawson, Williams, Erskine, now Baylor. Some of the all-time most delicious drummers seems to have flown through the Jackets ...
winnerbaby44- You're not dumb. The fact that you asked this question tells me that. It's a clip picking up at the end of the piano solo alright. But, for the rest of the clip, the drummer is soloing with the piano, and, for a moment, by himself. There really IS NO back beat...no real groove to speak of. You can get a sense of time from his rim shots in the chorus, though. I'm a drummer, so I'm listening while there is an "internal" clock counting in my head! lol- I hope this is helpful to you!
here, marcus and kenny, the pianist, are playing off of each other. marcus is filling in the spots kenny isnt playing. adds depth to the song. in these smaller bands everyone is a musician playing parts that add to the song. not, the drummer provides the beat then everyone solos over top of him, which the yellowjackets do do sometimes. you gotta think your set as a whole, not snare, hihat, kick etc...
its to hard to explain over the internet. as far as the sound, draw out a triangle and divid it into 3 horizontal parts. for rock the bottom box is the kick (being the loudest) middle is the snare (slightly softer) then your cymbals in the top box. there the "backbeat" comes from the snare and kick. if you turn the triangle upside down, thats the sound for jazz. the ride and hihat are lowdest and are the "backbeat" the snare is softer and the kick is softest of all. the above comment will helpto
you know.. I've been listening to a lot of jazz and after so much time listening to this tune again feels very diffrent.. its a matter of feeling and having sensitivity.
Not to brag, but when I play my drums (you know that feeling you get when you don't care about anything else other than what you're doing right there) that's what I feel when I play and I put all my feeling into it.
yea that's sweet. Like i feel it and every thing, and i have feeling. But i dont think my playing level is high enough to just get into it that much, im concentrating too much. And that could also come from my heavy metal background.
this song has a chorus that's 5 bars long, then it's repeated...making it 10 bars total. in my last post, i describe the beats within each bar.
this video seems to be a clip - so it's coming out of the piano solo - not an intro. the video fades in on like the end of bar 3 or so (during the bars of 4/4)...
the crash just prior to the sax coming in would be bar1 (for counting sake).
if you start counting right on that cymbal crash, you'll be able to keep counting throughout to the end.
i'd count it as this pattern: a bar of 6/4 then a bar of 5/4, 2 bars of 4/4 then finally one bar of 5/4. at a tempo of roughly 180bpm.
songs like this, in odd meter - you just come up with a way of counting that works for you...not sure how they would have written it out, but that's how i'd count it.
wooden hoops bring warmth and tone to the drum i have them on my toms and it makes a huge difference and am currently in the process of getting them on my snare
I see what you mean. That allows him a great amount of control over his articulation and rebound as you can see in is playing. It's anything but unusual. He's an amazing musician.
Dude everytime I watch this vid of Marcus I'm like how in the world does he bring it all back? He's locking the entire thing down nice and then he just brings it back on point like it's childs play! ( ^ _ ^ )
