  • jfrost77hd it is 10000 miles amd theres a little tear in the seat never been layed over 1 owner bought brand new off show room floor

  • im thinkin about getting a 1986 honda xl 250 would it be a good starter bike for the road i ride dirt bikes all the time and they want 1250 for it is that a little high i think it is

  • @bassallyear365 I'd say so... unless it's near mint condition.

  • can u make a video on how to loosen a tight hand clutch reply asap please fixing up my xr80 and can you show how much oil you have to put thanks that will be a helpfull to me and other people who are fixing there bike for the first time :)

  • @nathanb3100 To loosen the clutch handle just tighen the adjuster that goes into the clutch lever perch... if you dont have anymore room there go down to the sidecover where it goes onto the arm and tighten it. Oil wise fill it until it's at the top of the dipstick crosshairs when the engines warm... but dont over fill it. I'lll get a video on all of this sometime soon. Thanks for watching!

  • Do you adjust the timing chain with the engine running or off? As far as to get the chatter to quite.

  • @TyG444 Running... Thanks for watching!

  • im going to stick another engine in there theres a rod through the block 1450 to rebuild or 400 for a used but good engine

  • @bassallyear365 Hey there you go... sounds good man!

  • will this work with a yamaha warrior 350

  • @bassallyear365 Not sure how the tensioner setup is on that but same with the valves. Thanks for watching!

  • @bassallyear365 actually, no, i have a wolverine 350 (same motor as the warrior), and i can send you a video of how to time the chain on that.

  • Thanks for making this video and sharing with us, it has been a greatt help with the bike I am working on. I don't even think the clymer manual covers this..

  • @race4w Hey thanks for watching man!

  • @jfrost77hd got a question i have a 2006 honda crf100f and my intake valve tensioner doesnt have any play at top dead center what needs to be the gap is it the same thing as the xr100?

  • @xbfan87 I believe it's Intake: .002" Exhaust: .003". but double check. Thanks for watching!

  • your awesome. im rebuilding one for a customer and i got every clymer manual except the xr100 one . thanx for posting. much , much needed info

  • @SavxgeX420 Hey glad to help man... Thanks for watching!

  • hi do u now how to get rust off an engine on a xr80 because my bike has rust on the engine

  • @nathanb3100 The engine is cast aluminium so it's not rust... just oxidized and maybe corroded... hit it with some steel wool and it will clean right up! Thanks for watching!

  • GREAT VID MAN. IT HELPS A LOTT i have a question, if the valves arnt set just right then will that cause it to not start and run? long story shot i rebulid my 02 xr 80 (new rings and seals) and i put it back together and it wouldnt run. i know a lill more now so i might try to take it appart again and try to see what i did wrong. i was pretty sure the timing was set right but watching your videos im not sure now.i really hope i can get it back running again. thanks

  • @g1andrhone Hey thanks for watching man... I'd double check everything and then make sure your getting fuel and spark. You'll get it man!

  • great video! your easy to understand that is stuff i can use on lots of motors

  • @kegginit Hey thanks for watching... lots more engine videos to come!

  • Hi, i liked your video.Quite informative. It will help me.I am about to go to a mechanic for my 4 stoke Honda timing chain adjustment.Thanks.

  • @bufubufuuu A mechanic... I got the info right here! ;) Thanks for watching!

  • you got a tv host voice or something haha. thanks for the video though my man

  • @CoeCoema7 Haha yeah I hear similiar stuff to that all the time... Thanks for watching man!

  • hey, thanks for posting. been working on 2 strokes my life, new to the 4 stroke world. had a xr 80 with loud valve/chain rattle noise coming from it, this video helped me get to the problem. one Q on adj valve clearance - the top of the guide were it touches the spring seems to be on an angle. so, at the outside edge, i have .002, but closer to the center, I have 0 tolerance. is this normal?

  • @eahlm That's normal on the valves... thanks for watching!

  • Black smoke is gas, grey smoke is oil, you idiot

  • @RomperStomper1966 Thanks for watching man!

  • you held the timing chain tensioner the wrong way

  • Great stuff, well illustrated and easy to follow.......Thx

  • @airsoftdeath101 Hey thanks for watching!

  • Hey bud, great video. I just bought a '06 XR100 and I also bought the BBR 120cc kit for it, so seeing the top end explanation is really going to help when I install the bore kit. Thanks for putting out a great video.

  • @degraafics Hey glad to help... thanks for watching man!

  • Can you post a video on changing the bottom timing sprocket

  • what does it mean when there is black smoke

  • @TheVersa2010 Burning oil... probably either piston rings or valve seals.

    Thanks for watching bud!

  • @TheVersa2010 it could also mean you have a rich fuel mixture

  • will u sell me a fly wheel cover for a xr80

  • how the fuck do you know so much do you live in saint john i need work done on my xr100r

  • @TheVersa2010 Haha... just tearing stuff apart and figuring it out. Sorry man I live in Ohio in the US.

    Thanks for watching!

  • I need a cylinder head for my xr 80 do u have one I could buy from you

  • @SuperDirtbike97 Nope sorry dont have one off hand. Thanks for watching!

  • @jfrost77hd i have a 1985 xl 100 and my top timing sprocket is really wore out. Is there another sprocket on the bottom of the cam chain that i have to replace too?

  • Just used your vid to adjust the timing chain on 2 noisey bikes - XR100 and XR80. With the engines warm and idling I loosened the 12mm set nut low and behind cylinder, then I loosened and retightened the center screw and retightened the set nut. Next I loosened the 10mm hex bolt on the left side of the cylinder and turned the flat head screw till it got quiet. I went JUST ENOUGH to quiet the engine and retightened the screw. Once loud, clattering engines are now almost silent! THANKS AGAIN!

  • Great vid! Very thorough. Thanks a million. Please consider doing one on how to change the timing chain.

  • @coochie2u Hey thanks for watching... glad to help! Next time I do one I'll get a video of that!

  • great help i did not realize the cam shaft had to be pointed down per-say while at tdc. could that explain why my engine was having some blow back thro the intake valve? thank you

  • @V12CAMARO Hey thanks for watching... yeah if your timing wasnt correct it would do that, or bend your valve.

  • what if i got the motor in a box completely taken apart....how do i put it back together from scratch without seeing it built. on an '02 xr80r. the vid was a great help but just not enough...how would i set the timing

  • @TheBawillard Best bet would be to get a book... Thanks for watching though!

  • is xl100 the same timing as the xr?

  • @lilblueguy Havent messed with many of them but I'm sure it is very similiar if not the same.

    Thanks for watching!

  • @lilblueguy yes it is the same engine

  • Do you have to have the cam chain guide or do you just need the tensioner?

  • very thanks , from chile .

  • @CAHB79 Hey thanks alot for watching! Greetings from the US!

  • nice video's just a question I have a xr 100 2001 it was in pieces when I got it, the chain broke and busted the ear of the stator base where the pick up coil mounts to, busted cam,and flywheel side cover broke, it looks like the tap on the flywheel is pretty chewed up just wondering if you have ever seen or come across this issue and if so have you tried to fix it, I was thinking about putting a bead of weld on this tab and filing flat. I can send you a pick if you would like. ohio native too.

  • @highlandhillbillys Oh yeah those side covers break all the time... very common! I had one that it was broke right at the sprocket and layed a piece of plastic on the sprocket side and Jb welded the inside waited until it dried, pulled the plastic and sanded it down. Been working great and keeping water out of the stator. Give it a try! Thanks for watching...good to hear from you!

  • ok i build the engine back up and now i forgot how to and where to attach the wires for the starter coil like the 2 green wires, then a green wire attached to a black wire then got a black wire and then the only wire i found was the one that plugs into the starter coil, any ideas on wiring

  • @joeybuffdaddy woops nevermind i got it running but now i broke the little ignitor spinning spark thing haha the little pin that catches the holds the spinner in place when it makes a spark it fell out or broke off..could i make a new weld pin?? to hold it

  • @joeybuffdaddy Possibly... or probably find a new one.

  • @jfrost77hd nevermind haha i fixed it all..had to make some parts but it runs haha thanks for helping me with this video!!! this will be good info for my future projects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @joeybuffdaddy Hey not a problem man... glad you got it up and going! Thanks for watching man!

  • So I did all this last night, but now it won't fire at all and it feels like the air is getting pushed back out the carb instead of the exhaust. Could it just be off by 180* or is something else going on?

  • @drjaredshelton54 Could be a number of things... double check that the cam lobes are down at Tdc and sprockets lined up, and valves are adjusted.

  • so i take it if the cam shaft is not set right it will not run, and when you say TDC you mean the piston is all the way pushed to the top of the engine?? HELP its summer and i want to ride!!! haha

  • @joeybuffdaddy That's correct, if the camshaft and sprocket are Not aligned right your timing will be off, and you can bend you valves when the piston comes up if they are open at the wrong time. You'll want the piston at TDC all the way up... dot aligned and camshaft lobes pointed down. You'll get it bud!

  • ya i have good spark! i have checked the timimng 4 times and it is good! it sounds funny when you kick it over. fuel is spitting back out of the little copper tube in the back of the carb!! WONDERING if maybe carb is plugged somewhere and not getting fuel.....what do you think??? this is driving me crazy!!!! thanks jfrost77hd!!!

  • @DOUG5571 Yeah I'd definetly check the carb out... having you tried starting it with starting fluid? They funny noise when you kick it... have you adjusted the valves? You'll get it man... they can sure be a pain sometimes!

  • i have a 85 xr 80 just put new piston and rings in it timed it off your video and it started up ran for 5 min quit and now wont start timming is still good but seems to be blowing back through carb a bit any ideas

  • @DOUG5571 Do you have good spark? Sounds weird but I had a similiar problem after a rebuild and just had to replace the condensor by the coil and then it ran great! Check to see if the condensor is good.

  • how do i advance the timing on a 2003 honda xr80r, so i can put av gas in it. haha!

  • does this prosedure work for mid 70's xr75 aswell ? because im trying to get mine to start but it only shoots flames out of the intake mainfold and exhaust and has no compression

  • @DEATH94SQUAD Yeah it should all be very similiar....sounds like the timing is off if it's shooting flames.

  • great video. I just bought an 80 xls and im getting ready to do this. It dosent run but has spark, and carb is clean. Havent tested compression but it feels ok. Will try and test today. Wont even fire off ether. Im hoping the valves are way off or the cam spun.

  • @rynb15 Yeah you'll get it... looking forward to seeing it!

  • @jfrost77hd well i messed around with it and got it to run. After about 30 seconds the motor locked up. Its in the lower end. Parts in the mail. By the time i get this bike running i hope i dont have enough money in it that i could have bought a knew one. ha.

  • @rynb15 Ahh man that sucks... did you just order a used bottom end or did you figure out what exactly it was?

  • ha ya im 6'1" and i bought a 1983 yamaha pw80 just because of the price.. showed up to the guys house and paid 40 bucks..came wtih original pink from '83. had no top end at all and had been sitting outside for years.. sooo new main bearings and seals and a brand new crank and also did trans bearings while i was in the cases, then found the ENTIRE top end brand spankin new on ebay for $120 but ended up getting it for $81.something. now it doesnt have spark. chased down a bad magneto pickup

  • @1rad58 Yeah it's always something.... I did all that work on mine and had very little spark and couldnt keep it running, it sat for about a year, came back and worked on it and realized I'd forgot to hook up the condensor... plugged it in and fired right up and runs great! Definetly always something... that's part of the fun though is tracking it down and finding it and getting the accomplishment of fixing it!

  • great thing about these engines is they will run for years no matter what you do to them but they will run forever if you keep up on oil changes and clean your filter, and other things that should be taken care of every now and then. back in the day we used to run our xr80 out of oil and not clean the filter for a year and they ran good for how we used em but i wish we did do the maintanance on em bcz stuff started to get expensive pretty quick after a bore job, valves and other stuff.

  • @1rad58 Yeah that's one of the most common problems, people run them low or out of oil and on the cylinder head saddles where the camshaft rides gets worn. Then you need a new head and the list goes on from there. But yeah very good engines like you said will run forever if you take care of them with the basic.

    Thanks for watching!

  • @jfrost77hd y thats exactly what happened to mine.. we didnt clean the filter for about a year and i rode in a very dusty field all summer and it started to overheat one day and it began to burn oil and we never checked it till we reallized it was completely out.. then after another 10 hours of run time we did a bore job and realized the cam saddles were scored but ran it anyway & got it all back together then we didnt check the timing chain tension and it slipped and bent the intake valve :(

  • @1rad58 Yeah sounds oh so familiar.... I've worked on and rebuilt a few Xr80's and 100's and that's usually what i find. I've had quite a few.... I still have this one and have way to much money in it. Bought it for $50.00 hey cant go wrong... Right? Wrong... I've put a new head, valves, cam, cylinder, piston, rings, clutch, and tons more! I'm 6''4 do I really need a Xr100.... no but just couldnt let it defeat me! ;) Had alot of fun along with the headaches!

  • Thanks!! This was great help i'll be reffering to your videos alot more often Keep up the good work and thanks again

  • @94Rodriguez Hey thanks alot... glad it helped you! Lots more to come!

  • Thank you for the very helpful information. I am restoring a 1986 xr-80 and this video is an excellant instructional tool. This video is the first of yours I have seen so far, and I will be checking them all for more help with the xr-80 xr-100 series.

  • @ashlar32 Hey glad it was helpful to you... hope everything goes nice and smooth! Still got quite a few engines and still have this Xr100 so definetly be seeing more of it! Thanks for watching!

  • im havin trouble with engine timing my dads fixing tho on my kx 80

  • @XmaltezX Yeah it can be kinda confusing sometimes... hope you guys get it all worked out!

  • nice video i like the explaination of top dead center

  • @itdatanow Hey thanks...and thanks for watching!

  • Hey, great video! I have an 01 xr80 that has ticked since the day i got it. It runs perfect but has always chattered when riding it. What would you adjust first, the valves or timing chain? Also on adjusting the valves, where do you stick the feeler guage when adjusting- between the valve spring and flat metal piece or between the screw thing and the flat metal piece? (sorry if that last part didnt make sense I have no idea what the parts are called!) Thanks!

  • @TheFiddyMan Hey sorry I didnt get to you sooner. I'd try adjusting the timing chain some first. Also on adjusting the valves the feeler gauges goes between the bottom of the adjuster screw and the top of your valve. Let me know if that makes sense or solves your problem. Thanks for watching!

  • you have some relly nice bikes good for vintege raceing

  • @bikejumping110963 Oh yeah... that would be alot of fun! Thanks for watching!

  • on that same engine, how do you adjust to points under the flywheel?

  • @23dilley Yeah the points are under the flywheel, you can adjust them without pulling the flywheel too!

  • Thanks for theses specs I think I may have my xr100 set to 006in but I'll fix that. Also is it a good idea to adjust tue chain tensioner while bike is running cuz my cam shaft is ticking like long stop and load. Check mine out and tell me what I should do, I think I may need a new head since I've replaced the camshaft holder.

  • @CoolSypherz76 Hey not a problem man! Yeah you need to have it running so you can hear when it's adjusted. When you replaced that holder was the journals on the head where the cam sits worn? Could be just your valves or you timing chain aswell if it doesnt quite down adjusting the tension.

  • Love your bikes baddass

  • @shadyws310 Hey thanks, good to hear from you! I'm posting a video of all of them running right now! Thanks for watching!

  • @dmaheryfz450 Yeah their tough bikes... keep up on general maintenance and they'll run forever! Thanks for watching!

  • very informative...good vid

  • @GatheringSticks Hey thanks... Hope it helps some people out!
