  • WOW i remember this like it was yesterday what great teams we had in the late 90s early 00's. lol love how jackson referred to recchi and JR's OT goal as overtime MMMAGIC! im so glad hes still our announcer, hopefully there will be more magic to come against the oldskool rival bruins in 2010!

  • damn what a snipe

  • This was the last time the leafs were in the playoffs.. embarrassing for us damn

  • The Flyers are the NHL darlings killers. The leafs, ovechkin, brodeur, the canadians. The odds(refs) are against them in these series, but they still prevail. Fuck the rest of the NHL, holding a grudge against tge flyers for 40 years.

  • still an awesome moment in Flyers history!

  • "The crowd is quiet" HAHAHAHAHA

    Let's Go Flyers!!!!!

  • Man wtf! we need gary dornhoffer back as an announcer.

  • Dornie was amazing, but JJ is WAY better.

  • hockeyvan...u cant really compare them. jj is the play by play dornie was the color guy. i miss dorny but sitll love coatsey jonesy and clement

  • Yeah, that's true. Dornie was the man. But Gene was the best.

  • unfortunately i wasnt around for Gene as im only 19, but i do recall him and coatsey calling the 1998 phantoms calder cup championship. He was great and his daughter is by far the best national anthem singer in the country.

  • Well I'm only 16. But, I grew up in a Flyers'-crazed family and grew up watching a lot of vintage games with Gene as the play-by-play.

And I agree, Lauren Hart is the best N.A. singer in all of sports.

  • hahaha....i remember being at this game....it was beautiful....so quiet after that goal...i'm from toronto but i hate the toronto maple leafs....not only did i see the flyers go through, i saw the leafs go out...dream come true...JR's scream was soooo loud after that goal....haha...fuck the leafs.

  • The 3 or 4 minutes leading up to that goal might be among the most exciting playoff action ever! Thanks for the memories, JR.

    Go Flyers!!!

  • I love when the Flyers beat those fraud make beliefs every year

  • I don't know what happened to my previous comments regarding Jeff Carter but anyways. I basically said that Carter would be lured into signing a giant contract with another team, thus forcing philly to let him walk because of cap issues. I suspect the Canucks will tender him an offer sheet much the same way Bobby Clarke did with Ryan Kesler 2 years ago, except this time Holmgren's hand will be forced to let Carter go as he will be signed for similar money as Mike Richards.

  • Paul Holmgren is going to resign Carter. If he wasnt going to resign him, we would traded him at the deadline, but we didnt cause he's a future 40 goal scorer. He'll command around 4 million bucks, around 1.5 million less than Richards. Trust me, Homlgren will have Carter signed before the free agent period arrives.

  • "he would have traded him at the deadline."

It's not that simple. Carter will be restricted at the end of the season which means the Flyers will get draft picks if he signs with another team. And it was reported that Holmgren tried to trade him at the deadline for Kaberle and then Kessel but Kaberle wouldn't waive his no-trade and the Bruins politely declined a trade for Kessel. If Jeff Carter is a future 40 goal scorer as you suggest then why would he take a dime less than Richards?

  • Richards is our best all-around player and, he's our future captain, and has emerged as a consistent player throughout the season. Carter has 27 goals but he hasn't truly emerged the way Richards has, therefore, he'll make around 4 million/year.

  • Tell that to Carter's agent. He'll argue that Carter was more productive than Richards while Richards was out. Carter needs more ice time and he's not going to get that playing behind Richards in Philadelphia so why would he take a hometown discount? Look at the 40 goal scorers in the nhl today...Iginla 7 million, Lecavalier 7.2 million, Malkin is set to make 10 million. Are you sure Jeff Carter is a future 40 goal scorer? Because if he is and you think he'll sign at 4 mill then good luck.

  • He's at least a 30 goal scorer, but through the promise he has shown this season, it is obvious that he can reach 40 goals in the coming years. Holmgren will sign him even if he has to fork out 5.5 mill per year. No one will pay him more than that because he's not a player like Malkin. Besides, we're probably going to look to get rid of Hatcher (4 mill), Modry, and Smith, in order to get a younger/faster defense. Plus, Briere will be making 2 million less next year, and the salary cap +2 million

  • The gap between 30 and 40 goals is 10. It takes the average 40 goal scorer 20 games to make up for those 10 goals. I don't think it's obvious at all that Jeff Carter can reach 40 goals playing behind Mike Richards in Phildelphia, and so it'll be up to Paul Holmgren to assess Carter's value over the summer. I have no doubt that Carter would bring more value to a team with an increased role and so I suspect there'll be suitors of the 6/7 million range who see a franchise centerman in Carter.

  • It's either that or you wind up overpaying for Carter and placing all your eggs in one basket ala Tampa.

And by the way, no official announcements have been made as of yet pertaining to an increased salary cap. At least not to my knowledge.

  • There was an article posted on Sports Illustrated, saying that the Salary Cap is going to go up to 56.3 million dollars due to increased TV ratings this year...and higher attendence rates at games. As for Carter, the flyers will do everything they can to keep him, even if it means letting RJ Umburger, Mike Knuble, and Sami Kapanen go. Briere, Richards, and Carter down the middle gives us alot of depth, so i dont see Carter leaving. Also, what teams would pay 7MM for Carter right now? Name them.

  • It looks like the Flyers will sign Carter. Paul Holmgren said in a report and press conference that he definitely sign him. Hatcher will be bought out, Knuble will possibly be traded, and maybe Simon Gagne cause he takes up 5.250M of the Cap and with his concussions this year, its not guarunteed he'll be the same again. So if him, Knuble, and Hatcher get dumped, that brings the flyers down to 37.45M of Cap space. Carter=5M, Umberger=3, with room to look for another forward and D-man.

  • I posted those comments at a time when no official announcement had been made as it pertained to an increase in the cap. As you know the landscape can change in a heartbeat. Holmgren wasn't exactly singing this tune near the trade deadline. There were all kinds of rumours floating around that he wanted a puck moving defenseman (kaberle) and was willing to trade Carter to get him.

  • Also, keep in mind there's still a possibility that Holmgren signs Carter and then trades him at the draft. There's a provision in Kaberle's contract that would enable the leafs to bypass his ntc which could potentially trigger a trade between the two teams. I'm sure Toronto doesn't want to give up 4 draft picks for Jeff Carter, and I know the Flyers wouuld love a puck moving defenseman. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

  • Well, Carter isn't going anywhere now...he's set for 3 seasons. There was no way Carter would have been let go after being forced to trade RJ Umberger.

  • perfect shot by JR. always nice to see the leafs go down.

  • What happened to the Flyers after that?

Oh yeah, they went down the next round. Hahaha!

    1975

  • dude, the penguins weren't even in the playoffs that year. The only reason the flyers lost that series was because of special teams(with the power play). They would have won the cup that year, had they made it past Tampa (having lost in 7 to them).

  • By the way, yea the last time the flyers won the cup was in 1975, they have two cups, but so do the penguins, they dont have anymore cups than the flyers, so what does it matter that they last won the cup in 75? The flyers have had a more successful franchise than the penguins, having made the playoffs more, won way more division titles, and Conference titles.

  • But of course the Flyers have been one of the top spenders for years and look what they've accomplished. This video is a contest between two of the biggest spenders and LOSERS the nhl has to offer. Congratulations Philly, ya beat the Toronto Maple Leafs and it only cost ya 60 million bucks to get knocked out in the next round. Hooray for teams that don't go all the way!

  • The Flames had the best goalie in the league and arguably the toughest team from top to bottom led by Jarome Iginla...so even if they made it past Tampa (who own Philly btw) they would have still found a way to lose just like they always do. It's Flyers tradition to raise expectations and lose.

  • Well, you can bitch and complain about the flyers and say that they suck all you want and claim that they're no closer to a cup than the year before (even with all the additions they made), but until the penguins can (a.) beat the flyers once this season, (b.)then beat them 4 or 5/8 times during the season, and (c.)if they meet in the playoffs, win a series between them; if the the penguins cant accomplish any of these than your comments are obsolete.

  • I told you the Flyers were mediocre at the start of year. After 35 games my point still stands. They are nowhere close to a cup.

The Penguins will turn it up once they get contributions from players like Staal and others not named Crosby. You can't expect the Penguins to sleep walk their way through the season. Haven't you leanred anything from last year? It was around this time we started to pick it up.

  • Btw..the flyers are 3-0 against the penguins and just killed them in their last meeting 8-2. Notice how Crosby still isn't having his way with the flyers? I love how penguin fans take pride in last season's sweep of the flyers...most of the time forsberg was injured, their other top players were injured, and their minor league players were in the roster for those games.

  • Oh NO not 8-2!? Crosby still managed 2 points and was voted third star. And of course the Flyers followed that up with 3 straight losses of their own. Old man Roberts, at 41 years old, just ripped Eager a new one. That was hilarious. Just wait till the flyers come to Pittsburgh and we start getting some power plays. The excuses will be flying off the shelves!

  • yea well the penguins also followed up their loss to flyers with a loss to Ottawa and then to the Rangers, so the penguins are still behind the flyers in the playoff standings. But don't worry, the flyers are just looking for consistency and once they get that and their players gell, they'll be roling. And so what if crosby managed 2 points, they were assists...he hasnt scored a goal yet against philly.

  • He's scored enough goals against Philly in his career so don't worry about it.

Hey pssst, crawford, we're ahead of you in the standings now. (36 points to 35) I told you it wouldn't take long to catch up.

  • dont worry...the flyers are in a bit of slump right now but they'll get it going and start putting big winning streaks together starting with the leafs (their next opponent) and then they'll be back where they belong. And the fact that Crosby has score alot of goals against philly last year and before doesnt mean anything since he hasnt scored a goal yet against them yet.

  • as of this year..*

  • and there's still 5 games to go which means plenty of time left for the Crosby show.

Funny thing is the Flyers would be at the bottom of the eastern conference had they lost those 3 games vs Pittsburgh. Everything that could have gone right for Philly has, and they're still nowhere near the top.

  • Well, they're not at the bottom of the conference, they're in 7th place right now and have won their last 3 games. The only reason the penguins are ahead of the flyers right now (by 2 points) is because they won yesterday, and the flyers don't play until friday. If the penguins beat the leafs this thursday they'll be 4 points ahead...big deal.

  • As for being near the top...have you even checked the standings. 3 Points. I repeat, only 3 points seperate the flyers from the Devils, who are in second place. Ottawa is running away with the lead but that's expected. The flyers have played the least amount of games in the east so im not concerned. Yea there's still 5 games left but so Mike Richards and the flyers' defense has made life difficult for Crosby on the ice. Every game, the flyers have been able to contain him enough to get the win.

  • Also i dont give a damn about Eager...we just traded him to chicago for Jim Vandermeer to deepen our defense. Plus, when the flyers get Simon Gagne back, its only gonna make their offense more potent and give the team more energy. But dont worry, the flyers and penguins will meet again in philly first on January 24th and then in Pittsburgh on february 10th....we'll see at the point if the pens are turning around their season.

  • One goon for a another eh? Congratulations. That's the Philly way.

  • "Oh NO not 8-2!? Crosby still managed 2 points and was voted third star."

Yea, I was at that game. Umberger had 3 goals. Lupul had 3. Their line had 14 points, and Bettman's love child, who was a -2 with those 2 assists, still gets the 3rd star.

    NHL bias what?

  • It has nothing to do with the NHL. The philly media (comcast or whatever) voted Crosby 3rd star. Blame them.

  • lol yea, it was because of the philly media. It doesn't matter though, cause the fans saw that as just another opportunity to boo Crosby. Bettman seriously needs to be fired though, or something has to be done, and Versus has to stop airing the hockey games. ESPN should be doing that. Back in 2004, that was when hockey was still awesome to listen to with Gary Thorne and all them.

  • It'll be interesting though to see what Crosby does and what happens when the penguins come to philly...i'll be at that game, so i'll get a live view.

  • Were you at the game this afternoon Crawford? Did you see Malkin's 4 points against the Philadelphia Phailures? lmao...

  • If Game 7 was in Philadelphia in 2004, the Flyers would have won. They were so great at home. They're starting to click now. They should go pretty deep this year.

  • Oh who cares? Tampa owns your ass and that's all I got to say. You'll go nowhere this season with Daniel Briere and his 10 million dollar. -18 on the season and he isn't even averaging a point per game haha. He's a piece of shit and so are the Flyers.

  • hey buddy...it's still 4-1 flyers this season, don't get too cocky yet, the penguins almost blew the game this afternoon. If the flyers are a piece of shit, how did they manage to beat the penguins 4x in the first four games this season? Keep talking buddy, we'll see who has the last laugh when the season is over.

  • I'll give Richards his due...he's not a piece of shit but Downie is. Downie ran away from Ruutu what the hell was that?

  • i dont care about downie and all the fights and shit like that...

  • best

    goal

    EVER

  • what a shot......ooooooh belfour

  • yea really

  • This never gets old

  • Speaking of old...

    1975

  • 1992 isnt exactly the most recent of times either... and for a team with the "best young talent", hows the basement of the Atlantic Division treating you?

  • 1992 is a hell of a lot more recent than 1975!

And you spoke too soon. Penguins lead the atlantic division. Get your head out of your ass.

  • Why don't you pull your dick out of Mario Lemieux's ass and maybe he can strap on his skates and lead your team to a Stanley Cup!!

Face it, the Penguins have let their fans down over the years just as much as the Flyers. Except, Philly didn't have to have a former player save our franchise from being sold. Way to support the team.

  • what does it matter? the penguins have 2 cups, just like the flyers. Win another cup and then u can gloat.

  • pitt fans dont comment on this video, this was the flyers year. its to bad they lost in the finals

  • yea i know! I still can't believe we didn't go all the way that year. Our team was stacked. We had Roenick, Amonte, Gagne, Primeau (who was a beast in that playoff run btw), Handzus, Zhamnov, Markov, Malakov, etc...I don't care what anyone says, tampa did not deserve to win the Cup that year, during their 2 year cinderella story. What makes me mad is that Tampa will never win the cup again (well not for another 10-15 years or so, and yet they come outta nowhere in '04 and win the title...ugh..

  • yeah out of all the teams i think the flyers were the best team. primeau desirved the cup the most out of everyone. and tampa wasnt even good. st.louis and lecavlier and richards came out of nowhere. i think calagary deserved it more then tampa even. they could this year if they are smart. they have briere prospal knuble richards lupul biron timmonen coburn jones carter umberger. they are good this year but you may not agree in my opoinion i dont think stevens is a good coach.

  • no you're right...we need a new coach, and we need another puck-moving/offensive defenseman. Stevens sucks as an NHL coach...i actually wish we still had Hitchcock. We need a better coach so we dont give up close games like today. Things are getting tough now with the flyers trying to seal up a playoff position.

  • yea stevens needs to bring back to good powerplay of lupul richards briere knuble timmonen now that theyre all healthy. put umberger with richards and lupul cause back in the begining of the season thats the line that go 2 hattricks. bring hartnel up with briere and put upshall with carter and knuble. carter line has been so hot of late but he's putting kapanen with them. if over the summer they can resign prospal and pick up a puck moving defenseman, they will be set with gagne back in the line

  • Say goodbye to Carter over the summer. He will not re-sign in Philadelphia.

  • The Flyers need a new coach, new players and a new general manager who knows what he's doing and doesn't sign overrated softies like Briere to multi-year contracts with no movement clauses.

  • Best team? Ha! Count yourselves lucky you didn't play Ottawa in the first round or it would have been another first round exit for the Flyers. There was at least a handful of teams that year who were as good, if not better, than the stupid Flyers. The only thing the Flyers were good at was spending money and breaking hearts.

  • At least the flyers were in the playoffs, unlike the penguins who missed it for another season during their 4 year drought. And what makes you think Carter wont resign in Philadelphia? The flyers are going to lock him up as soon as the offseason begins. The only new players the flyers need is another puck moving defenseman and a really solid goalie.

  • Zhamnov? Amonte? Please. You just named a bunch of overrated panzies. What the Flyers needed was a solid goalkeeper. Everyone knew that except for your lousy general manager Bobby Clarke. The Flyers did not have a bonafide superstar that could make up for the goalie's shortcomings. As a result, the flyers playoff defeat was inevitable.

  • you're just biased toward anyone who plays for the flyers. Zhamnov had a very good career and Amonte was one of the best puck handlers at the time. Robert Esche was brilliant during the 2004 playoffs. Primeau did all he could but the flyers defense couldn't hold up. Oh, and we would have beaten Ottawa anyway cause we were able to beat the Devils, who had our number in the playoffs. The only team that was slightly better than the flyers that year was the lightning.

  • Primeau would not have been able to crash the Ottawa crease like he did to New Jersey with Chara standing infront of the net. The Devils did not have Scott Stevens on their blue line and Ottawa was beginning to mold itself into a powerhouse. Nobody wanted to play them that year. Ottawa outhit, outshot and controlled the play in every single game vs the Leafs. Ed Belfour put on a show for the ages but he had nothing left in the tank vs Philadelphia. Trust me Ottawa was better than Philly.

  • With the way Primeau elevated his game during that playoffs, and with the high the flyers were on, Chara wouldn't have made a difference. Scott Stevens is only 1 person, and Brodeur wasn't in his prime anymore. He was letting in soft goals from the blue line and their defense couldn't stop the flyers offensive attack. Besides, the devils still had Rafalski who was their best defenseman, rather than Stevens who just made cheap shots on people.

  • Even if Belfour put on a show, it was only 1 round, and a goalie doesnt run out of steam after one round....not unless he didnt wanna win as bad as the flyers did. He had plenty left in the tank, to say he didnt is just an excuse. Toronto's defense just couldn't do anything against the philly attack. We would have beaten Ottawa, because our offense was better and had good team chemistry. I dont understand why you feel the need to cut down the flyers for their past playoffs.

  • The guy above you said Tampa was lucky and you basically agreed with him. I'm not cutting down the Flyers. They had a good team but were those memories really worth Evgeni Malkin? Would you not trade those memories for a chance at a superstar player like Sidney Crosby? That's why I don't understand when you make fun of us for rebuilding. Management purposely tanked the team so that we could be good down the road and now that the road has been reached you're saying we didn't deserve it.

  • i'm not making fun of you for rebuilding. I agree. I would trade those memories for Malkin and Crosby, but the problem is i live in a city where people are too impatient to wait, although they did wait in the early 90s when they began to arise in the mid 90s. You guys definitely deserve what you got now. The problem with the flyers is that, they have players (kimmo timonen and daniel briere) that wont accept building a successful team through the draft. We'll have to add better defensemen/goalie

  • Maybe not you but I often hear flyer fans ragging on the Penguins for building through the draft. They say the only reason we got those players is because we sucked...which is true, but they never preface their comments with the whole story. It was planned suckage. Had we kept Jagr/Lang/Kovalev/Morozov etc we might not even have a team today let alone geno and sid. Pitts is not a big city either. Flyers can afford a quick rebuild because they have deep pockets and more people to draw from.

  • Scott Stevens is only one person but he played 30 minutes a night on defense for the NJ Devils. You think Primeau was scared to cross the blue line with 5'10 Brian Rafalski staring him on the other side? No chance. It changes the entire dynamic of your attack. That's why guys like Stevens and Pronger are so valuable come playoff time. Primeau would not have been able to muscle his way to the front of the net like he did against NJ and Tor's defense.
