I don't think those consoles had the capability to run these kind of games. I had a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive back in the day and the games were fun but these arcade games were always faster and busier with the gameplay and basically more detailed.
Yeah arcade games generally were superior in graphics and sound quality at the time but I think they could've managed a half decent port of this game on the SNES at least.. if the SNES could do Street Fighter II and Turtles in Time it could probably do this game.
I don't understand why there aren't more videos of this classic! I spent hours and hours at the arcade trying to figure out how to do the "Red Crash" or "Blue Hurricane" special punches. Cheapo fighters Iron Drago and Harlem Hit Man used them every 5 seconds or so! You could still use the other punches (MACH PUNCH, Triple Thunder) but they happened almost randomly. Oh, and the game had three endings (depending on your total play time).
Hey guys, have you played Hard Puncher? (japanese version of Final Round) There are several differences between them but I think the biggest one is the fact your stamina diminishes only when you are hit (and not constantly draining as in Final Round).
If you are using a merged ROM, you can play it on MAME. Select Hard Puncher from your game list if you're using MAME32 or input "mame hpuncher" if it is a DOS version.
It's a ROM which includes the different versions and (or) revisions of a game. Let's say the american version of game X uses the file 0b64h.bin. If this file is also present in the japanese version of that game, you can keep it in a single folder or zip and MAME will load it whenever you start either version.
If a file for a particular version is missing, the game may not run and you'll get an error message.
A merged ROM has files for all the versions of that game in the same folder.
It won't hurt if you have both romsets as separate items, but it is possible to extract, let's say, all the files that are unique from hpuncher.zip and add them to fround.zip. That way if you play Hard Puncher that romset will load fron the fround.zip.
I have eight different versions (Japan, World, Oceania, 2P, 4P, etc.) of the Ninja Turtles arcade game; all of them load from inside tmnt.zip.
I disagree. The greatest difference (and a big plus) were the extra circuits hidden in Hard Puncher which you could access by inputting a code at the startup screen. They weren't present in Final Round.
Other changes:
-Boxers with different names.
-Different title screen.
-Different end credits after clearing one of the special circuits.
-Visual gags after meeting certain conditions (winning without being hit, fast win, etc.)
@MagmaDashE and if i remember well, if you punched all of the balls in Hard Puncher, an extra ball (which was actually an alien embryo from Contra) would pop out and if you punched it, you'd get a couple of extra strength points, but if you missed it, it would bite you.
When you play this game, how do you prefer to allocate your attribute points? Usually a balance of let's say, 40-30-30 (in all speed, power and stamina) yields the best results for me.
Another question, how can you perform the blackout punch? (used by Iron Drago and Harlem Hit Man) I think you can because I saw Gentleman Joe hitting Red Falco with it during the demo.
i remember this game because it not only made references to several rocky movies (i.e. the first opponent's resemblance to Clubber Lang, and an opponent based on Rocky IV's Ivan Drago), but there were plenty of references to Contra (Jabbin Jim and Gentleman Joe's resemblance to Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, and a contender named Red Falco)
I remember playing this at Kenmore Lanes when I was a kid.

Ok, just checked it. Seems the same with The Final Round.
What is "merged" rom?

U mean that all rosets r not the same?
In the romset I tried (hpuncher) the game run normaly but u must also have the fround rom.
TK2008BEST 3 years ago
Exactly. They may have similar files (which they share) but technically they are different ROMsets.
MagmaDashE 3 years ago
Well... things r like this:
For "The Final Round" u need the romset(rom) fround.zip and for the clone u r talking about u need the same romset plus the hpuncher.zip
So there's no any merged rom exept if u have such rom.

HP is better than FR imho.

I like the japanese names better. "Joe Vulcan" sounds more badass than "Gentleman Joe"... but the scrolling text in the opening!
The kanji translate as "The fight is starting. Unleash the beast!" in comparison, "Go all the way to...(the Final Round)" sounds pretty lame.
hartosama 3 years ago
My japanese is not the best but I think it says "Let the beasts fight to death. The circle is starting!" (whatever that means) :P

Usually I started with good stamina(at least 40) and I upgraded the other 2 during the game.
I have no idea about when the blackout punch works...:)

And the final-extra Round is with..."Italian Stallion".
I had finished it many times on arcades. I can't do it now in Mame, because needs a really good firm-solid joystick.
Very good and funny game, which requires speed and power from the gamer.

you mean "Black Stallion" who is a spoof of Mike Tyson
