@umwhoalol m4 isnt a good weapon, its a convenient weapon. It is less reliable and fouls up faster than an m16. and an svd is a great rifle, russia can equip waaay more to their troops and they provide way more support than the bolt actions that most american and canadian dm's use.

@dovic3107 The US rely mostly on their cruise missiles and air support for success, their infantry are not trained as well psychologically as soldiers are in other nations, which is why you see in a lot of videos, the US retreat once they sustained a casualty, or they just panic. Also, the Russian weapons are based on the principle of global war, meaning a war of the same scale as WW2 if not bigger, where reliability is key. It is only recently they started adapting their weapons to new tactics.

Americans still have more awesome and effective weapons than the Russians do. Russians have new designs like the AEK-971 on the shelf, but they don't have the economy or the resources to field such weapons, which is why you see the soldiers in Chechnya running around with AKM and AK-74 rifles.
eh, the M4 is shit... thats understandable, fragile, jams often, needs lots of maintainence. make the AK74 200x better and that may be a fairer estimate. America is too beurocratic, which sometimes makes our stuff REALLY good, Or REALLY bad..

let me remember you several things. Russians have balanced prototypes since 1970's (at this time USA is adopting M16a1). In early 1990's, russia adopt AL-7 prototypes decendant : AN94 and AEK 971. Since, both rifles have been intensively tested on the field (including chechnya)
They would likely conceal more advanced technology, but no small arms. I would love to some actual footage, or pictures, of either of these weapons in use by Russian forces anywhere. In Chechnya, the Russians are always seen using the AK-74, so unless the Russian army has a giant practical joke going where every time someone is about to take a photograph, they pull out a ragged AK74 or AKM for the camera, I remain skeptical.

@soverato3 Its old and outdated, no matter what the media tells you, its still an effective weapon, but only in numbers, the akm or ak103 are the only good versions of the weapons, 7.62x39mm is a very powerful round, but is still very uncontrolable, its only known as bieng iconic, but still the more modern ak74s and other rifles are much more useful on the battlefiend

Today, officialy, russia's rifle is AK74, but in many special units, AN94 has became a standard.
And army don't need sophisticated rifle, aK74M is perfect for it.
AEK and AN94 are nowadays one of the finests firearms in the world, and usa still can't do balanced rifles.

BUT in 2003 (don't even speak of 1991 war) iraq war, USA army and marine corps uses in more than 50% of its units olds M16a2 and XM177, plus some M4 and M16a3/a4. Of course the hyper pictured elite rangers, specops and other elites had only M4 with accessories... Usa began devlopment of new weapons (based on german (xm8, hk416) or belgian (scar)) designs only in 2000's.
Some units received some new weapons in late 2000's (scar, 416), but M16/M4 will still be there for long...

No, for example, AN94 has the same type of sights as HK, FN and AR weapons, and is as accurate.
Better power ? Yes, for sure, 7.62x54 beats 7.62x51, 7.62x39 has not equivalent in west, but 5.45 is slightly less poweful than 5.56 (1700/1400j).
12.7x108 Rounds are better than 12.7x99, and 14.5x114 has no equivalent in west.
125mm are most powerful tank rounds, and russians have plenty of good HE and FAE rounds, contrary to west who likes HEAT dual purpose

Chenya wars took place between 1994 and 1999. Yes russians forces uses AK74, and special forces too, plus AKM. But not only, at this time already, specops of russia have a lot of modern specials weapons at its disposition : AS val, VSS, SR3, OC14 ... Plus some units testing AN94 and AEK971.

Americans still have more awesome and effective weapons than the Russians do. Russians have new designs like the AEK-971 on the shelf, but they don't have the economy or the resources to field such weapons, which is why you see the soldiers in Chechnya running around with AKM and AK-74 rifles.

The Ak-74 is pretty accurate and because of smaller caliber than it's older brother easier to shoot as well.

@Hatinonthehaters I was thinking, since the AK assault weapons are more preferable in harsh conditions by most Americans (especially since they use the the M4); wouldn't it benefit the US Military if they began equipping with AK101's? Afterall, it fires the 5.56x45 NATO caliber. What would you say? As for me, well, us Irish will stick with Steyr AUG (it fires the sam type of rounds too).

@EikC totaly false, the only thing that based your comment is lack of knowlage on russian army and weapons. Russia show what people now already, as in cold war there is a big secret around military devlopments.
let me remember you several things. Russians have balanced prototypes since 1970's (at this time USA is adopting M16a1). In early 1990's, russia adopt AL-7 prototypes decendant : AN94 and AEK 971. Since, both rifles have been intensively tested on the field (including chechnya)

They would likely conceal more advanced technology, but no small arms. I would love to some actual footage, or pictures, of either of these weapons in use by Russian forces anywhere. In Chechnya, the Russians are always seen using the AK-74, so unless the Russian army has a giant practical joke going where every time someone is about to take a photograph, they pull out a ragged AK74 or AKM for the camera, I remain skeptical.

In all cases, neither russia nor america have massively fielded its moderns weapons, and francly M16 and AK74 will be there for decades yet...
But you must admit that russians began the devlopement of modern rifles far before USA, even if now they both are lacking funds to adopt.
