I suspect that after opening your PSP, a cable could be snagged inside, and the PSP thinks you are pressing the mute button when actually it's being held down by something else.

Open it up again and move the circuitry panel for the buttons, around a bit.

i also have that same problem and this is not just a simple issue

to those who are telling that he pressed the note button to mute it you got it wrong

did you just recognized that the brightness changed. to mute the psp you have to press and hold the note button for about 4 seconds then thats it but problem is you cannot use the note button

and for some instances

when you pressed the home button in an odd manner like 1,3,5,7 it will mute the psp but pressing it like 2,4,6 times it will not

Mens i need somo kind of help i put a gameboot of prince o persia, the problem is that i can play with the emulators but when i use the psptube or the ISOS the psp turn off, i put the original gameboot cause i think that would fix the problem but nothimg happens please tell me what to do i have a psp slim the software of the system is 5.00 m33-4

That usually happens if your buttons got wet. I had to change my whole buttom buttons because i was playing my psp with a wet hand.

No i dont have sweaty hands i touched something wet while listening to music and i was pausing and using the volume control with my wet hands and a couple minutes later...the effects began...mutes by itself etc. then total shut down of the buttom row buttons.

the problem there is the menu bar you have to replace it or you clean it. The menu bar is like an elctronic ribbon. Peel of the tape and clean both sides with alcohol and let it dry before you put it back.

Maybe there's some silly little problem then, like the mute button doesn't work because it was permanantly pressed down. Something like that. You might want to realign the panel of the music and HOME buttons etc.

when you opened it up you probably screwed in the mute button to tite or something is pushing the mute button down, open your psp again and clean the mute buttn and make sure nothing is hitting it.

Thanks, I ended up getting rid of it...but people aren't too helpful here...got a lot of rude comments from Sony's fan club. This was a legit problem...and I definately didnt know what was going on...I even took the thing apart originally just to try and see if there was any moisture or something that could have been causing this.

Dude, I have the same problem. It also mutes itself when I press the HOME button and the button to mute the PSP doesn't work. Also my start button dont work but when I go into Hold and exit it, it takes the function of start. And now my USB connection and the UMD drive arent loading. My PSP is screwed.

press the + and - to adjust the volume and the music note symbol puts the system on mute when the headphones are not in. when the headphones are in it changes the tone.(i think) srry about the spelling if it is bad
