rats are incredibly intelligent especially for their size. I've had cats, dogs, hamsters and rats and out of all of them rats are the fastest learners and the best problem solvers, this is why they are used more than any other animal in psychology experiments. They are however less good at understanding human speech than dogs.
I love rats, I had 2, they died but they were fucking cool and now we got 2 other females... but when I see people having more than like 2... I can't help but find and think that those person are probably dirty and stink.
Usually they are fat ugly bitches with no friends.
Obviously you've never had a rat, or at least not one that you treated kindly. Rats, especially those raised in loving environments, are actually pretty damn smart. They're on most top 10 smartest animal lists, and scientists who work with them know just a wee bit more about them than you. As do I, having raised rats for over 25 years, though I wouldn't say they're smarter than dogs, because it seems to be a tie. BTW there's no need to cuss about it. To us rat lovers, rats rule, you drool. ZING!
While I love my rats dearly, I'd NEVER throw away my cat to get more of them.
Just because you don't think your cat is as smart, and s/he vomits [which is probably because s/he's sick, as cats shouldn't vomit often], doesn't mean you have the right to get rid of it.
Rats are prone to many sicknesses and every one has a different personality. Vet bills are expensive. If you're so quick to to replace your pets, I don't reccomend getting another pet, especially a rats.
Do you even have ANY experience with domesticated rats? Obviously not, or you wouldn't be slinging the word "bullshit" around. Whether or not they're smarter than dogs and cats is hard to say. Even scientists are in disagreement over the precise hierarchy of animal intelligence, but they use rats in various lab tests for one indisputable reason: they ARE proven to be among the most intelligent animals in the world. They are in the top 10, after all.
Rats are certainly less intelligent than dogs and cats. Just look at the size of their brains. Rats are intelligent rodents, no doubt, but they are rodents.
@Slappy2112 Brain size has nothing at all to do with intelligence. Look at whales. The blue whale's brain is larger than a car, yet humans are clearly more intelligent than whales.
@Slappy2112 they are roddent and you're a fucking douche. They share 99% of the same DNA we do. Much more than your stupid cat and (cool) dog. Intelligence is not about the size of the brain... If it was, whales would dominate the world
Btw, I have had pet chickens since the rats, and Chickens are very smart, too, as smart as the rats! The the chicken wanted to get in the house, she would go out in my front door and wait for someone to open that door. Liked the nicest bedroom lay her egg on the bed, leaving a present there. Chicken would come when called, and perform ticks on command.
Ok, folks, for those who doubt the intelligence of rats, here is a scientific study supporting my assertion:
Viana, D., Gordo, I., Sucena, É., & Moita, M. (2010). Cognitive and Motivational Requirements for the Emergence of Cooperation in a Rat Social Game PLoS ONE, 5 (1) DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0008483
"Amazing rats" by Brian Mossop
In the study, rats adjust their strategy based on their opponents, including by cooperating, benefiting the common good, which help them long term.
Rats could very well be smarter than both dogs and cats-- although I love both of those animals. People make non-justified statements about things just because they are so bias toward one side. You have no way of knowing what goes on inside animal minds, and neither do I. Therefore no one has the right to say things like you do without substantiated evidence (which there is in the favor of rats).
of course rats are smarter than dogs. what defines intelligence is the ability to solve problems and learn, not be obedient. any rat on the street will be smarter than any dog. its just a fact of life.
Rats are smart. Smarter than dogs? Quantifying intelligence is any animal is tricky, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were just as smart or even smarter.
Don't confuse trainability/conditioning with intelligence. Even a cockroach is able to be conditioned to do certain things.
wow.. you make me want to get a rat.. what a loving family you have there... with all the animals you have a very clean home.. I would eat dinner there anyday.. thank you for posting.. lovely video
Yes, rats are as smart as you would expect a dog to be. Maybe not up to German Shepard standards...but still very intelligent, social animals that bond well with humans.
My friend had a rat and it came when she called. Twice it accidentally got locked outside and she later found it waiting outside for her at the front door.
