Someone can't claim to be humble if they claim to "just know" the nature of the universe through faith. Christianity isn't humble. Why do people look to it to teach them about humility?
No, a man can't be humble if he seeks to make himself a god, which is what the Godless man seeks. Since this is so, nothing can be given to this man, he must take all that he seeks by conquest, including his knowledge. Thus he knows because he is intelligent and discerning, because of his own personal greatness, not because it is given to him by an act of grace. When anyone else claims to know anything, he interprets the statement according to that same model of conquest.
I thought it a good read the book "Mere Christianity". I wonder if Non Christians would think that I'm saying that because I am a Christian and I just like things simply because they are Christian. Actually I do not. I find most Christian books to either not be very Christian or not written very well or sometimes they are beyond my reading level. I think it would be the same for Non Christians. I'm sure not every Non Christian loves every Non Christian book.
But anywho enough of the disclaimer, as I said, I think it a great read. I think it has something to say for both Christians and Non Christians and I think it's quite possible that neither shall like to hear it. Though sometimes the best medicines are the most bitter. Have you read "The Problem of Pain" also by C.S Lewis?
I have not but I think I would find it interesting as I think the problem of suffering one of the trickier subjects in not just Christianity but just life in general.
Trying to think what I think of this. I'm sure I agree with him, that a humble person is not someone who is always telling you they are nobody. I'm also sure I disagree that someone humble will necessarily be intelligent or come across as intelligent, I'm sure someone with learning disabilities could be humble, while not being "clever" in the worlds eyes. The rest I'm thinking about. Is humility the same as dying to self? Maybe. I'm not sure. Thinking... Probably....Possibly....
@sepiasunrise I love your thoughts. I think he mentions intelligence because in order to learn, you have to be humble. So humble people will naturally want to learn more? But I see your point, too, about people with learning disabilities. Hmm.
I guess we could say that it's impossible to be entirely humble all of the time, but I think that some people are indeed more humble about certain things. And I guess there needs to be some sort of way to balance being proud of an accomplishment and being humble about it at the same time.
Every time I hear someone reading a quote or trying to make one up I feel like there looking at life through a window... humble not humble good or evil, it doesn't make a difference. People always praise talents they don't have themselves....
Great excerpt! My mind is boggled by all the wisdom you share with us. Funny how the desire for humility ends up becoming an oxymoron after hearing this.
Oh and when he talks about Christians essentially being soldiers in enemy territory. Also, when he writes about living as if the person you're shaping yourself into is the self you will have to endure for eternity.
I love that quote. Or just anything written by C.S. Lewis, you could quote almost anything he writes. You just reminded me that I should re-read this book :) Thanks.
Also, referring to your last video, you do look older in this video :)
I just got done reading it the other night. Such a book to be able to turn our thoughts to self examanation and help us to see the simple joys of knowing God.
I'd say that this quote still holds sway for the modern world of today. There's always those people who project themselves as being humble which is, ya know, the opposite of being humble lol. But I'd like to think that those that I know that are in fact humble are accurately described by this quote.
@FillingInTheSpaces LIke Michelle Trachtenberg USED to look, for sure, but not so much now, since Michelle started doing MAXIM shoots, dying her hair, etc.

as Martin Luther said. A true humble person is never aware of his/her humility. If you think you're a humble person, it only means that you are not.

Is it wrong to say that at the end, when you looked into the camera, you looked like a psychopath? I think it was the smile… Kind of creepy.
I loved the passage though, it was really nice. You're so awesome, one of my favorite youtubers I must say.
