  • The Porsche 956 was made of cardboard !

  • A lot was learned from Manfred's crash at Mosport by ALL concerned, both track, FIA, Porsche, team, police and rescue personnel. With a result of the crash, the 962 was produced for the IMSA Camel GT series and went on to be come a very safe race car to the point which the 956 model was quietly retired by Porsche in Europe and replaced by the 962 model as well. The only positive out of this crash is that the changes after made racing far safer for others. RIP Manfred. Your remembered at Mosport

  • @torontoworker thankyou so much for such a detailed account of such a tragic event, if only i cud consult u for info more often!

  • - Wall at 2A moved back 40 feet in early 90's and tires placed in front of it.

    - Wall in year 2011 has tires six deep in front of wall.

    - Future plans are wall moved even further back in new construction plans by new track owners.

    - 956 designed changed on orders of IMSA with the end result being the 962 with feet now behind axle plane and front roll over bar placed within fiberglass covering and foam covering.

    - Wheel axle stubs *new* special clip design to prevent wheel nut from coming off.

  • - Winkelhock passes away Monday while Durham Regional Police issue warrant for interference in a police investigation for officials of Team Kremer.

    - Hulk of 956 is cut into small pieces back in Germany and wheels and tires destroyed.

    - Impound procedures changed by Mosport after this accident. Police attend all major crashes where driver sustains life threatening injuries. All vehicles impounded under lock and key in future.

    - Warrant still outstanding from what I gather for Kremers.

  • - While driver in Toronto - car put on flatbed along with all other material including tires and rims and transported to Toronto even before race over.

    - Team on plane and leave without the rest of the WSC charter flight the following Monday. Both Kremer brothers leave Sunnybrook straight to airport Sunday night.

    - Winkelhock on life support - doctors await wife coming from Germany on overnight flight. Girlfriend asked to leave.

    - Durham Regional Police looking for crashed car.

  • - Kremer team members attempt to interfere with extraction of driver not understanding that delay was not caused by lack of tools but stopping bleeding from four areas of body. Team fined later by FIA.

    - Borehole performed by track doctor to reduce pressure on brain in race medical after transport. Enormous swelling of brain inside skull indicated back closed head injury. Driver transported to Sunnybrook trauma center in Toronto via helicopter. Edit:Amend car crashed at first LEFT hand corner

  • - Car left pit lane after full tire change.

    - Car crashed at first right hand bend on out lap after tire change.

    - Witnesses at top of corner two saw Winkelhock struggle with steering at crest of hill.

    - Car impacted wall with drivers head hitting roll bar (that collapsed inward) that surrounds top of windscreen.

    - Drivers legs were tangled up in front suspension pieces and metal.

    - Medic's were attempting to stop the massive bleeding and get IV into driver.

  • He was an underrated driver. Deserved better success in Formula One, but unfortunately just drove too many F1 garbage cars. -Daz in Oz.

  • "concrete safety barrier" :O

  • The Porsche 956 had the drivers legs in front of the front axle and in any head-on collision such as Winkehock's and Bellof's the driver was always going to suffer massive leg injuries in addition to any other injury. Chassis design and strength has really progressed so much in the last 10 years or so with the introduction of carbon fibre.

  • Those cars are safe to drive around a MIni-Putt though. Captain of the U-boat says to 'dive' after that comment !

  • From 1982 - 1994, no Grand Prix drivers were killed in F1 races.

And yet, three drivers were killed racing Sports Prototypes (Bellof, Winkelhock, Gartner) in the summer of 1985 :-(

  • @altroval Sorry, Gartner was killed at Le Mans in 1986, not 1985. Still...

  • @altroval

elio de angelis starb leider 1986 während testfahrten in frankreich (le castellet).

  • funny how they call a giant concrete wall a "safety barrier."

racing's dangerous, but some of this stuff is just crazy. how the hell is a concrete wall safe?

  • what a mangeled mess

  • Why was there a concrete wall there? Unbelievable!

  • it took to long to get him out of the car...

then they laid him up on the wall and he fell down

    what a driver...first him...then bellof...

  • Its weird seeing my first name, Which is rare on its own, coupled with a person dying.

  • this years they took elio, stefan and manfred away......i still knowend

  • I was there that day. I was at corner 2 as they worked to remove him from the car. It was such a sad day. Then Bellof so shortly after... :(

  • RIP to the great man. His brother is also a great driver. Bless

  • Seems like a lot of drivers died in the Porsche 956.

  • I didn't know that Group C raced at Mosport.

  • @PeterMayer It was a World Endurance Championship round the mid 80's.

  • First time I've seen this,Very sad and it remindes me of Bellof's crash at Spa.

Didn't Manfred have a big one at I think, the 'Ring in the seventies?

His car did a backflip and ended up in the barriers.

Apparently he'd bent his front wing up and the thing just took off,

The headline in Autosport was "Manfred joins the Luftwaffe"

He was lucky to get away with that one.

    R.I.P Manfred

  • @cass276 He did flip the car, yes. It was at an F2 race in 1980 at the 'Ring. He was driving a March, and flipped at the Flugplatz corner.

  • is Marcus Winkelhock his son?

  • @nascarsignore

    YES!!

  • 25 years. R.I.P 20 days prior stefan bellof.

  • @Effetier Aye, 1985 was a nightmare.

  • The angle of the retaining wall at turn two is just all wrong. And without even a tyre barrier in front if it, so much of the force of the accident was clearly absorbed by the car, and unfortunately, Manfred.

Ok, it was 25 years ago, but that wall should have been built further back and at a much shallower angle to the track. Had it been, Manfred may well still be with us..

    R.I.P.

  • R.I.P. Manfred,great driver.

  • @cerbaiolo Yes R.I.P Manfred was a great driver

  • "safety concrete wall" ... yeah brilliant... RIP Manfred

  • Jakie kiedyś były bolidy... niesamowite.... [*]
