I didn't know this solo version until last night when I heard it on the local airwaves. I loved it, with respect to neil diamond who she collaborated to co-write it is way way better done duet.
I read once that when Barbra recorded the duet version of this song, she did it in one quick take. When people seemed amazed, she shrugged and replied (making reference to her having recorded it once before): "Well, I already knew all the words...". :)
Everyone talks about Barbra Streisand's tone, the one that inspired all those comparisons to the world's smoothest condiment. They also speak of her range, which mirrors the distance between the depths of the Grand Canyon and the peaks of Everest. Her lung power invites equal comment; Small wonder since, at full bore, it can flatten a town.
I remember the first time I saw this album in a store. I picked it up and looked at it because I wondered if there was a song called "Songbird" on it and if so, if it was the same song done by Fleetwood Mac (Christine McVie on lead vocal). Well, it turned out to not be the same song, but I was pleasantly surprised to see this song listed. I knew it was a Neil Diamond song, and I have always loved learning of versions of his song done by others.
(Imitating Janice from Friends) OH, MY GOD!!! Listen how Barbra brings this song to life. I remember in the fall of '78 while listening to Kasey Kasem's Top 40, he introduced this number 1 song in the land, going on four consecutive weeks. Instead of playing the duet with Neal Diamond, he played this solo version. I was amazed how this version stopped me in my track that Sunday afternoon. This song is perfect from beginning to end. I knew I would be a Barbra fan forever.
Right on. Both Streisand and Neil Diamond had recorded solo versions of the song prior to the hit making duo.
A DJ spliced the two versions together because both versions had the same arrangement. It was so well received that it was suggested that they record it together. This song has an interesting background.

Well, if you like this solo version, check out Neil Diamond's solo version. Neil, recorded it first, then Barbra covered it.
Little did they have any idea that they would eventually record it together and have a number one smash

If I may add to your story, Neil Diamond did this song and released it as a solo on his album, "I'm Glad You're Here with Me Tonight".
Streisand liked it so much that she immediately recorded it on her album that she was working on, "Songbird".
They are both in the same key and both at the same tempo, so a radio executive had some fun with the two songs and pieced together a mock duet.
Diamond and Streisand heard it and liked it so much that they decided to do a real duet together.

But I don't like coffee & cannoli. I don't even know what cannoli is!
But I DO bring you bacon, eggs, hash browns, and freshly squeezed orange juice!
You never LISTEN to me anymore, so why talk?

Her solo version of this song is just beautiful. Perfect pitch! She interprets the Bergman's lyrics better than any other singers in the world!
