A great game! I was there. I'm glad this video include some of the rest of the game. The catch at 1:13 actually bounced off the astroturf -- the camera doesn't see it and the ref sure didn't, but it was in plain view for all the Stanford fans who were given only endzone seats to cheer from. It was THAT play (not THE play) that started the tradition of fans signaling "Touchdown!" whenever the refs made a bad call. That tradition lasted for years and years!

Knowing we killed Nebraska 76-39 only two years ago and keeping it close twice in a row in Lincoln, I don't think Nebraska exactly owns us anymore. Texas might, but not Nebraska. I would like to point out that while this play is very controversial and there could very well have been an illegal move by the Bears at some point in the chaos, it is likely they would've been awarded a defensive penalty (and thus one last play) due to Stanford having too many men on the field.

So I wouldn't call that 'technically a loss' at all.

I think what ultimately would have decided this game is Rule 9-1, Article 4 of the NCAA football rules, "Illegal Interference", allows the referee to award a score if "equitable" after an act of interference. Basically, you had 25+ extra Stanford players on the field when the possession had not ended. Even if Cal didn't score, referees had all the right to award them the interference touchdown. CONCLUSION: Cal Victory

5th Lateral: Ford was tackled at the 27 yard line when he threw the football over his shoulder, which Moen seemed to catch at the 25. So it seems the lateral is indeed illegal since it traveled forward. Unfortunately for Stanford, in football, the direction of a pass is judged relative to the field. Considering that the ball was passed to Moen backwards, this is a legal pass according to football rules. CONCLUSION: LEGAL

You CANNOT CLEARLY SEE that Gardner's knee was down before he pitched the ball because the Stanford players crushing him are blocking that vantage point. It's a highly like assumption which I support. At the same time, the possibility remains that he did indeed release the ball before his knee hit the turf. CONCLUSION: INCONCLUSIVE

Just saw the Big Game yesterday with two cousins. One's from Stanford, the other's from Cal. They seemed to argue about the Play constantly, so I figured I'd check it out.

Do a search on 'Cal-Stanford "The Play to beat the Band"' and watch that 1:33 video. It CLEARLY shows that Garner's knee was down BEFORE he pitched the ball and that the last lateral was forward as the ball leaves the player's hands at the 28-yard line and Rodgers catches it at the 26-yard line. That is an ILLEGAL forward pass. The facts are that Garner's knee was down before pitching the ball and there was a forward lateral. cal lost the game. Check it out for yourself.
