ron thal didnt do much of the recordings on the new album. he was pretty much an added gun and did some fret work after it was done. i think they sould have just changed the name of the band because no matter who you get to fill those spots it wont be the same. hell i think that they went to an extreme measure to get just talent to fill in for the rest. i love the replacements but not as a band together.

its the sweep your talking about, there are many guitarists that have or are in the process of mastering. You can just look up lessons on sweeping. try typing in shawn lane he had that technique. I believe he was good friends with buckethead.....R.I.P. Shawn...

From what I could gather using concert videos and such, there are 2 guitars tuned down to Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb and one thats in half-step down. Robin finck does the intro and his guitar is in the drop-D plus halfstep down tuning, as he plays the verses with his index finger barring the top 3 strings. His guitar is a normal les paul with 22 frets (after careful analysis of a close up). However, thats during the live show, and he could have used another guitar in the studio. Hope I helped.
