A friend of mine from Ireland put this song on a cassette for me years ago. Always loved it, even without understanding the history. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm curious...who is the "O'Neil" mentioned, and when did these battles take place?
I don't mean to be picky but its "Enniscorthy". The town is the location of Vinegar Hill. I saw Danny at the National Convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Boston a few years ago. I've always been a fan since my mother is a Doyle. I can't find his web site anymore and it seems that he has been very sick the past few years. Any info would be appreciated.
I'm English catholic but even i love this type of music for what it is and what it represents :) my mums scottish and she sings this all the time :) it's ace i love it! ::)
This is part of a Irish Music Fest!!!! We have one of the tapes but not all 3!!! Help us get the rest of the songs. We have been searching for it since 1993! Many a liter of Guinness has been raised to this Fest! We would like it all!
Excellent, where'd you get this? Wasn't this top of the Irish charts for quite a while? (And in the words of Paddy, 'made money for everybody except me' :-) ). Catalpa, you from the Burrow?
I bought them in 1980, they are a collection of 4 cassetes called Festival of Irish folk music. The Dubliners, Bothy Band, The Wolfetones, Mary Bergin, Danny Doyle, Clannad and The Fureys & Davey Arthur. a brilliant collection.
What is the record label? Found a few on Amazon, but none with this song. Forgot to say, thanks for posting, I've been searching for this song for quite a few years now.

Why can't I find this kind of singing singing Hymns? Like Christian songs in the irish voice.

Great song, which I used to hear on Radio Caroline in the sixties. Sadly, I don't know who sang that particular version. Any thoughts, please?

Uncomparable!
Can you tell me where I can get digital Versions of "Step it out Mary", "Sam Hall", "The early Morning Rain" and "Red haired Mary" by Danny Doyle.
Best wishes

Not from 'The Burrow'' [Portrane] but close, I sang a few songs years ago with Paddy.
He's a great songwriter

Catalpa I have to agree Danny Doyle was as good as any folk singer around. Thanks for posting,

This is the best version I've ever heard.
Written by a neighbour of mine, Pat McGuigan, who sang with The Barleycorn.
You get the feeling that it was a very old ballad, but was written only in the 70's.
Is Danny still doing the ballad scene over in America ?
catalpa 3 years ago 5
Yes Dardo Danny is still singing away in Amercia.
