  • Questions for you: How does the stem cells "decide"? From what basis?

And how does the cell "know" what timing to divide and even more so when does it know to stop and move to next stage?

And another question, where is the information about say f.ex the pigmentation of both the father and mother stored?

    thanks a lot,

    michael

  • Dr. Chec's tie...

  • Howard Hughes is a awesome Medical Institute investigator!

Thanks for sharing this great information.

  • The future holds for stem cells..the advantages outweigh the apprehensions and fears about its misuse..

  • humans is scared to advance their horizon if we as humans achieve level one as a intelligent species we b eternal

  • Living developing humans should not be reduced to marketable commodities.

  • @oran6es thats not what someone suffering from neurodegenerative would say

  • @oran6es ye they should.

  • @oran6es So you believe that:

    A. Life begins at conception (a legitimate point, I won't argue there)

    B. Human life is far superior to all other life.

    C. The life of an embryo that has a very small chance of surviving anyway is more important than the life of a cancer patient with a dream, talent and potential

    D. The same process through which humans are created at birth becomes a "marketable commodity" when used to save lives.

I can't say I agree with that reasoning.

  • @Istancow One group of humans(cell corporations) should not be given total ownership and control of another group of developing humans.

1.Spare human embryos no less human than non-spare

    2. Human embryos not killed in the process, rather kept alive, pulled apart, and forced to develop, in pieces. Resultant developed mature cells technically "infant cells", they're no longer embryonic

3.Big leap to assume they'll cure anything. Even if, the process is likely to be cost-prohibitive

  • @oran6es 4."will be destroyed anyway" not a valid argument. A serial killer on death row is near the end of life. Even he has the right not to be experimented on. Should a corporation be given rights to use his parts as marketable commodities?

5.The total control of one group of humans total body and substance(albeit in separate living parts) by another group well into full development may be a 13th amendment violation

  • @oran6es stfu f@G. if you don't like it suck it up

  • @nepalihercules No, sorry, won't shut up. Consuming our own young will never be considered medical "progress" in my book.

  • @oran6es dude i don't think u know what ESC research is all about. it's not like killing a living, breathing, talking human being. we're talking about cells here. cells, do u know what that means? if killing a living thing is wrong then we shouldn't even eat plants or anything for that matter. I respect life that is the exact reason why i'm a vegetarian but that doesn't mean we can't kill plants cuz we need them for survival. It's for the better of mankind. If we don't get rid of diseases...

  • @nepalihercules Have a burger. It's okay. It's not okay to consume one group of developing humans for another group.

  • @oran6es ur one ignorant f@G

  • @oran6es .... then diseases will get rid of us. 99.99% of all living species on earth have been extinct. So far we're the only one with high level brain. If we want to survive the next hundred thousand years we need to get rid of all the defects now. and stem cell research will help us do just that. maybe now people won't see the bigger picture but in thousand years people will realise it's benefits when they won't have any defective or diseased person in the society.

  • @nepalihercules Incorrect, my friend. The human race has existed for 3 million years. There has been no need to consume our own young. We're doing just fine. The treatment and cures for many diseases will continue without the need to grow infant cells in corporate dishes. Have a great weekend.

  • @oran6es ...btw if you're a religious f@g who's gonna say only god has right to take or give life then FUCK YOU.

  • @nepalihercules Heterosexual. Not a bible thumper. A physician with respect for all living humans. I wish you the best.

  • or more importantly when the cell mutates into cancer or does its job too well and over developes killing the host? then will the doctors be at fault or med researcher? I wanna know whom I am going to have to sue.

  • So what happens when people "make payments" and can no longer afford them, will Geron Repo their property? just curious....

  • would it be possible to place an artificial or transplanted islet near to or in the pancreas and use electronic stimulation to trick it into producing beta cells?

  • How do these cells divide into all types of cells that form the " animal " ??

    WE DON'T KNOW

How did life came about ??

    WE DON'T KNOW

So the main point is :

    WE DON'T KNOW

  • finally an embryonic stem cell video that isn't tinged with creationist propaganda.

  • wheres part 2??

  • hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!! OMGZ r u for reals?!?!?!?!?!?!? LOFL!!! FAG!! Jesus sucks balls!!!

  • @TheMarksmenCat haha ur funny mate. do u know how many problems religion have caused us in the past 1000 years. think about that for a second

  • @TheMarksmenCat Most people look to Jesus for love and compassion, not life-saving miracles.

  • GET IT STRAIGHT PEOPLE!!! BUSH DID NOT BAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH!! He banned the use of federal funds in the research beyond the existing lines in federally funded programs. PRIVATE companies could and can still do research with private funds as much as they want. NOTHING prevented them and they have been doing it at full force all along. Despite the presses assertion, federal funds aren't necessary to do everything.

  • walmart sucks. so does GE, which is a major war profiteer. boycott industrial capitalism and you'll do better.

  • some people don't understand that stem cell research is the perfect way to advance into the future. we could make life longer. make new life. the possibilities are endless. we have to do this

  • @Mattco92 Other than making life longer I think that the best of it is really improving life today. For instance tissue engeneering wouldn't be possible without stem cell research.

  • 33:11 hahhahah

  • This video is INCREDIBLY long. Can't you just get to the point?

  • Hi there. I'm doing my science fair project in stem cells, and was wondering if someone could help me a bit with this video...what parts talk about stem cells? Any key ideas, tips, or a small summary is really needed here!

  • welll, we know that so far adult stem cells, which dont kill babies, has saved approximateley 2000 lives worldwide.

    Embryonic stem cells, ZERO.

  • ...

  • u ok dude?

  • i dont expect u to put that though.

    :P

basically theyre cells that could turn into any other human cells, so you could use them to cure diseases and stuff by replacing essensial cells and junk

  • Yeah, I got that. :)

  • Right, where did you get those figures?

  • Now i know that embrionic stem cell research has so far not given positive results but if we were to get a better grasp on it, we could make a break through.

Now i do not know if you are a women or not but say you are and you get pregnant but you would not be able to keep the baby. Now if one of your friends is in a car crash and she cannot walk. If someone told you that your egg could give your friend their legs back would you do it?

  • well, if we didn't use those embryos, they would have been discarded anyway. and there are certain limitations to adult stem-cells.

  • However, the difference between ESCR and ASCR is that ASCR has been proven to be successful....And ESCR, through-out the entire world, has helped no one!

  • Correction, it hasn't cured an ILLNESS as of yet. It HAS helped people, for examlpe, to walk again. Admittedly, it hasn't cured cancer or anything like that, but that's the point of RESEARCH. It has potential, so why not work with it?

  • Az, Correction? I think not!

If you're saying that ESCR has cured anything, you are wrong. If you are saying that ESCR has repaired severed spinal cords, you are wrong, again.

Az, since you're young, I'll cut you a little slack. Today, ASCR is helping people. Today,,,Not Maybe Tomorrow, or maybe in a year, or 10, 20, 30 or even 50 years, but Today.

And what of ESCR? It is producing Teratomas.

  • ADULT stem cells have helped people to walk again AND cured a range of diseases. Embryonic stem cells have caused cancerous tumors in animal models. The embryonic cells have less of a potential just because of the massive side effects on both the 'donor' and recipent.

  • Embryonic stem cells, ZERO - gee I wonder if that has anything to due with the fact that it wasn't allowed to be researched until we got a democrat in office

  • Thats why its called embryonic stem cell "research". The whole purpose is to understand more about them....the application of what is learned comes at a much later stage.

Why do you think the physicists have spent billions of dollars smashing atomic particles eh? Its called "basic science research", which is an incredibly important part of science.

  • One hour long...I hope this will help my project!
