I feel a Mike Austin golf wave coming. Compare Mike's rounded shoulders at address (.01) vs the correct modern form of "shoulders back" and "shoulders square"
Shoulders back and square means that you are sacrificing leverage for a pseudo feeling of connectedness

the left forearm supinates while the right forearm pronates, thats the counter counter-rotation...very subtle move and the way the wrists work it makes it hard to see in the video. Ive done both with and without the rotation..with the rotation i can get around 330-340 yards...without it im around 290-300
You are all comparing what you see to what you are used to seeing from today's golfers. They swing out of their shoes and so we think that is what you are suppose to do to hit it far. This man's swing is so perfect, it looks like he is swinging at half speed, but quite the contrary. He was hitting the ball over 350 yards well into his 70's and remember that was with crappy balls and persimmon woods. Look it up...
That old fart was at one time one of the top five ballstrikers in the world, and certainly the longest with a normal (as opposed to contorted long-drive-style) swing. What have _you_ done lately?
He has a few video on his technique if you are ever interested. There are two one is Golf is Mental Imagery and the other is quite long calls Austinology. He goes in depth about how he did it.
With good technique anyone can hit it long. The question is can we sustain it under stress.
thats fair enough then i believe it. u have witnessed it so that is the debate over. it still staggers me how he hits it so far with a swing speed that isn't off the scales. i also heard hes was in his sixties so all credit to him
The video was slowed down quite a bit so we can catch his swing sequences. We did a time stretch, but if you try to track his arms and clubhead on the way down you will not see them.
i may be wrong but if i showed u a video of this man back in his hayday swinging a club with no name beside it would u have said he was the longest ever?
im not trying to argue with u, having read ur message ive watched other videos with him in and i am not saying YOU r wrong. u r right, they say he is the longest. but i feel many things he has done have been lost in translation, what was a really long drive 40 or whatever years ago, thinking back yu may recall being longer than it actually was
Well he was a very long hitter well into his late 70s. He was quite well known in the LA area back in the 70s and 80s. The LA time wrote an article about him.
I knew Mike quite well and watched him hit ball many times before.
He did play on tour briefly with the like of Hogan and Sneads, but never was too interested in competing full time as he had other interests in mind.
That and he couldn't putt. I knew Mike and he told me that the reason he never won many tournaments or went big time professional is that while he could drive the green on a Par 5 in 2, he would often still take 3 or 4 putts to finally hole out.
He said the reason for this was he would get himself mentally psyched up to hit these ridiculously long and powerful drives, but couldn't calm down for the soft style putting requires. He had incredible driving, but couldn't use it to win often.
Actually, it's not "thinking back," Wiz--Austin was really well-known at the time, and reporters were always following him around, checking the measurements, trying to debunk the stories they figured had to be untrue. But they were true, all right. The guy just had unbelievable timing, maximized every part of his motion and got all the energy into the clubhead, and his technique was light-years ahead of most of his competition.
well said em, but I saw that his descendant teachers swing not quite as Mike Austin, like wiz said earlier it has some missing link that they couldn't translate to Mike theory.
Just posted a reply, but I think it dropped...I'll wait a while and see if it shows up. In the meantime, have you seen the films of Mike when he was younger?
Well, thanks...that's precisely how I meant it. "Light-years ahead of most of his competition" = "a metaphorically far distance ahead of most of his competition," where "his competition" obviously means the people he was playing against, a group that would include people in his own particular niche of the space-time field. ;-)
I did used to read physics, by the way, although it should be said that it was all popularized, since I don't speak math--but the good stuff, not the crap.

am i wrong or do his wrists roll as opposed to the counter rotation which is generally taken to be a part of the austin swing?
