Hiking to the Summit of Mauna Kea, Big Island of Hawaii

How long does it take to summit Mauna Kea? Cuz I plan on hiking by myself... Also can you descent by a mountain-bike??

Great Video, lots of accurate info. Just climbed the peak last week. You can do it faster if in good shape and you keep moving. I kept moving consistently from the 9200 foot visitor center and it took 2.5 hours up and I ran down the 8 mile road in 1.25 hours. The view is great, and the lake is cool too. It was definitely a "highpoint" of our trip to Hawaii. Recommended :)

@altruistichedonist Oh, my, YES! There are several fabulous hikes to the top of Mauna Loa. My favorite: a 3-day affair from the end of Mauna Loa Scenic Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The most popular is from the Atmospheric Observatory on the North side (dirt road goes up from the Saddle Road) to about 11,000 feet; this hike only takes a few hours. Spending a night on the summit is incredible--but talk to the Back Country Rangers at 808.985.6000...you must register for either hike.

unlike mount everest...you can hike mauna kea without any problem and its legal!
