For those of you curious about the "censored" section of the song, Geddy said later in an interview that it was a joke and a lot of people don't seem to be getting it. Neither Alex nor Geddy can recall what he said, but Alex remembered that it was just "verbal farting." None of it actually got recorded anywhere. They loved the shot of him ranting into the mic, so they decided, as a joke, they would put the radioactive signs up on the screen saying that he'd been censored.
Great song.......first (and second) time I saw them at the Paladium in NYC back in '78, this was their oncore....went 2 nights in a row.....they opened with 2112......was hooked right then.
This is is easily the best La Villa Strangiato there is. It destroys the Hemispheres version. Anyone who doubts 'Hold Your Fire' era Rush needs to watch this.
@McElrone Destroys the Hemisphere's version? That's a pretty crazy thing to say, especially considering they don't play the whole damn song. I however agree that they were better musicians and songwriters at this point in time than they were in 1978 and that they are even better now than they were in 1987.
@BitchBeTrollinHard Disagree. I've read numerous times people saying that Peart is lifeless and boring (I, however, don't agree) and never changes his drums from album to live sets. With this said impro, I was merely pointing the contrary out. Don't get all 'precious' on me, I was only agreeing with what you said.
Haha, I used to bitch about that too. It may be that he was fucking around being silly and didn't to his pedal-board in time. Or maybe he liked all the delay he was playing around with.
I *love* the strings under Alex's lonely, pensive solo at the beginning of that movement. Its spacey and makes me think of a fleet of massive capital ships in space. :B
@caseyjones67 Personally, I think it's the same reason I stopped doing it: the timing required to make it sound great distracts me/him from playing the solo as perfectly as possible.
As said before, the only band that sounds like Rush, is Rush. Knowone else would or could even attempt to do what Rush has done, without embarassing themselves. The only people that hate Rush, are people who don't know what a true musicians point of view band is. All musicians know and can't deny who the best is. RUSH!!!
It's amazing for me to watch this old Rush footage & see NP using two bass drums! This "Hold Your Fire" tour was probably the last time Peart utilized two bass drums. I believe he's better using one!
I would have to say Rush's first few albums were hard rock, with slight verging on metal, but progresssive metal is a lot light than most other forms of metal. Rush is neither Progressive, Metal, Hard Rock, or any other Genre, they are the Greatness of Rush. An example of a progressive rock band is Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. An example of Progressive Metal is Dream Theater. Rush is neither, but Rush is genreless and that makes them good.
@BeowulfVids Rush is Rush. Just as Pink Floyd is utterly unique, Rush is a genre unto themselves. I do think they're comparable too, insofar as they were both super-successful doing nothing more than purely following their respective (and weird!) muses. Kudos to them both.
@1JZW rush is rock... i don't give a shit if they are progressive. i don't need to go into every little detail when you should get the point. i was never comparing anybody. it's just music get over it.
This s one of the most motivating instrumentals of all time. Any time I was bummed in my 20's (when this came out) I would listen to this and feel so much better INSTANTLY!

For a period of time, Alex used A guitar Called "Signature." It was canadian made and it employed Double Humbucker. the pickups were made by a company called "Evans." I own one, although it has a single humbucker. It is perfect for heavy sound. It is not EMG, but it does employ The "floyed rose II" Wammy. Alex always like the the Gibson ES, or PRS. He is great in every guitar he plays, Because he is one Smart player!
Alex Lifeson has been underrated for too long!He should have been listed in the top 10 of the 100 Greatest Guitarists in the Rolling Stone poll. He was not even on the list! Until Rush is inducted into the Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone will forever be known as " Irrelevant Rolling Stone" to scores of fans!
@captinvideo1 No, actually, he was on the list...but in the lower 40s. Which I think we can all agree is WAY too low. (It was Slash who didn't end up on the list, BTW, but what do you expect? It's Rolling Stone.)
@irena7777777 I think when making a judgement on a guitar player, you have to take more into account than just technique and skill. Songwriting should play a major role in making a judgment. I've seen plenty of technically skilled guitarists. But most of them are horrible song writers and are lacking creatively.
@rockisheaven The Rolling stone Article and list is still available online and there are many comments on there about Lifeson being omitted as well as Slash.
@rockisheaven I have checked the Rolling Stone List a dozen times. Lifeson is not on this list. A number of people have told me that he is. He is not - I wish it were otherwise! Peart is # 2 on the recent RS poll on the top 100 drummers though!
@adnoHis1 Yes but my point was that Alex has never gotten his due.Neil is always voted #1 which he is for sure! Geddy is usually picked as one of the greatest bass players too. Alex is easily one of the best guitarists that ever walked on this Earth!
@Aelia12 Yes, and as a Canadian myself I think that is so sad as well as stupid. It was the US of A that recognized the genius of Rush and put them on the world stage for all to see. There wasn't one record company in Canada even willing to sign them. Sad indeed... hell yeah USA!!!

There is only 116,331 views of this incredible video....That means there are at least 307 million and some change Americans who are musically deprived....Help a fellow American out and make them take the time to watch this....Lets stamp out music illiteracy!
@TreyRoque Umm, the rest of the world has it right bro! We only seem to be short in this area in America! Fuck the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! It should burn to the ground!!!!!!
@jimmymac63 The thing is, not everyone who watched the video is from the USA, like myself. So, instead of helping only your fellows, we should be spreading Rush around the world! What do you say?
@linuxjl Again, lol..Most of the rest of the world has it right! Every person I have met outside of the US LOVES rush. Of course, I want more people to listen to them. But if you were an ice cream salesman, would you concentrate on Alaska? Or the Virgin Islands? :)
@jimmymac63 Well said buddy, and sorry, I didn't read the other comment below... still, back to subject, I've got many friends who don't give a damn to rock, or to any kind of good music. That's why I said there's many people on other places around the world who need to see the beauty of Rush, and other groups as well.
I'm a die hard Rush fan, but this is probably my least favorite of Alex's guitars. This guitar sounds great for songs like Time Stand Still, but for this it doesn't quite work for me.
It's not really censorship, just more of a joke. They probably thought no one that bought the tape would think he was funny. Imagine that, he's fucking hilarious.
Have read that Clockwork Angels is going to be a concept album. I will be happy with anything new that Rush does, but I really would love to see songs like this done once again.
When I hear Geddy Lee on the solo section playing his brand of ethereal, atmospheric synths and textures, it makes me proud to love Power Windows. I DO think the digital synths made Rush sounds a bit tinny compared to the nice fat analog synthsizers pre-1984, but the chords and songwriting is there. I grew up loving synths because of Geddy Lee and Nick Rhodes, and both are never given credit for their greatness.
These three are ALWAYS flawless in concert (every time I've seen them and every video I've seen). But, the really amazing thing is that Alex Lifeson is so incredibly good, but he's never talked about among the great guitarists. Why? Well, first, it's a crowded field. But, mainly, it's because Neil Peart is arguably the best drummer ever to pick up the sticks, and Geddy Lee is also considered one of the best bass players of all time. How often is the lead guitar not the main weaponry in a band?
Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.
The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!
@ecapa0020 Ok, i agree with the majority of what you have stated, except for the part about U2. I am not saying you said anything pertaining to you liking them or not, but nonetheless, U2 wasn't formed very long after Rush therefore I don't think they were so influenced by Rush that without them they would have been "out of their depth", and they're very talented, all of them. Mcfly i couldn't care less about on the other hand. But I do agree with you on most other points though.
@ecapa0020 I do agree, the new bands these days don't seem to focus on scales of any kind and go with what they think is cool. Though it most often times turns out bad. U2 is quite old by the way.
Why does Lifeson play the infamous solo perfect at Pink Pop Festival. I have never heard him play it better than at that concert (and he hurt his finger during that 79 tour). I actually think the guitar he used during that concert was beautiful. Does anyone know what guitar that was at the Pink Pop Festival? Anyway, any comments????
Geddy said in an interview that Alex isnt saying anything, they just had the mic muted the whole time and thought it would be funny if they put signs in the video saying that.
Is it me or does La Villa Strangiato, especially during the middle of "Strangiato theme", sound like it inspired the early Sonic the Hedgehog games? It's fast paced, and has that driving guitar that was emulated by digital synthesizers in the early Sonic games. I dunno, every time I hear it I imagine Sonic running at full speed.

I own this video, and the editing is absolutely puritanical. The vocals for "In the Mood" were silenced (!). I'm guessing Alex probably spewed some filth along the lines of "my, what a corking good time! After the show I just may imbibe in a brandy Alexander in the company of an unbetrothed member of the fairer sex!"
@ClubPenguinMovies123 "what was alex saying that we werent supposed to hear?", he didn't say anything. It was a joke because the song is an instrumental.

I find it interesting that people keep going "omg why iz alex cenzor'd?" when if you either a) knew how this song worked live or b) had the idea to look back a few pages of comments, you'd know that it's a joke and that Alex is actually babbling nonsense into a microphone that's turned off.

@jimmymac63 Well said buddy, and sorry, I didn't read the other comment below... still, back to subject, I've got many friends who don't give a damn to rock, or to any kind of good music. That's why I said there's many people on other places around the world who need to see the beauty of Rush, and other groups as well.
linuxjl 1 year ago
@jimmymac63 Outside the US? If it wasn't for Cleveland Ohio, in the US you wouldn't have ever heard rush! The US founded Rush :)

I'm a die hard Rush fan, but this is probably my least favorite of Alex's guitars. This guitar sounds great for songs like Time Stand Still, but for this it doesn't quite work for me.

@jptheguitardude what guitar is this?

@waffelcone It's by a company called Signature. I believe they're a Canadian company.

It's not really censorship, just more of a joke. They probably thought no one that bought the tape would think he was funny. Imagine that, he's fucking hilarious.

Happy New Year Rush fans. We are listening to this really loud right now, and can confirm that anytime, anywhere - Rush ROCK ;)

Much thanks for posting.

RIGHT LET'S STOP MESSING ABOUT!!
Does anyone else agree?
ecapa0020 1 year ago 81
@ecapa0020 Ok, i agree with the majority of what you have stated, except for the part about U2. I am not saying you said anything pertaining to you liking them or not, but nonetheless, U2 wasn't formed very long after Rush therefore I don't think they were so influenced by Rush that without them they would have been "out of their depth", and they're very talented, all of them. Mcfly i couldn't care less about on the other hand. But I do agree with you on most other points though.
Selinedis 1 year ago
@ecapa0020 I do agree, the new bands these days don't seem to focus on scales of any kind and go with what they think is cool. Though it most often times turns out bad. U2 is quite old by the way.

Why does Lifeson play the infamous solo perfect at Pink Pop Festival. I have never heard him play it better than at that concert (and he hurt his finger during that 79 tour). I actually think the guitar he used during that concert was beautiful. Does anyone know what guitar that was at the Pink Pop Festival? Anyway, any comments????
Markcip1 1 year ago
@Markcip1 Gibson ES335 hollow body I think.
Annonymus121 1 year ago
@Markcip1 It was a Gibson 335, as apposed to his usual 355.
I agree. Pink Pop was his best performance ever.

@ClubPenguinMovies123
