  • i love rush but this is the worst version of la vila strangiato they have ever done

  • gate of the year 2012

    watch?v=DR01eRxfigI

  • Hey, i had "A show of hands" on a cassette, back in the days when the CD was a new technology and the CD players were expensive :)

  • For those of you curious about the "censored" section of the song, Geddy said later in an interview that it was a joke and a lot of people don't seem to be getting it. Neither Alex nor Geddy can recall what he said, but Alex remembered that it was just "verbal farting." None of it actually got recorded anywhere. They loved the shot of him ranting into the mic, so they decided, as a joke, they would put the radioactive signs up on the screen saying that he'd been censored.

  • Why was it censored?

  • What a fucking shitty guitar. Glad Lifeson is back to sticking with the Gibsons. Cheap 80's crap.

  • What did Alex say that was censored?

  • thanks soo much for posting this

  • My God this is beautiful

  • You know one person that don't know RUSH? Possible, but all that know RUSH - they like them, I'm sure.

  • and it still sounds great

  • @ 0:11 aww it's one of his awesome rants that we can't hear because of the producers :(

  • I wonder what alex was saying at the beginning of the video

  • Rush, in my opinion,is the highest order of rock and roll, the versatility of progressive rock, is just amazing..

  • Alex effed up the timing at 4:27...starts playing the main riff a beat too early. Ha.

  • @nobska913 agreed

  • what guitar alex use? look like a jackson but its not..

  • The look Geddy gives Alex at 00:29... Geddy looks genuinely pissed off. Ha! Never noticed that before.

  • Great song.......first (and second) time I saw them at the Paladium in NYC back in '78, this was their oncore....went 2 nights in a row.....they opened with 2112......was hooked right then.

  • The most epic playing by the only power trio that really matters!

  • i wanna hear WTF he's saying :(

  • Alex's best hair style was the late 80's...he's such a champion

  • This is is easily the best La Villa Strangiato there is. It destroys the Hemispheres version. Anyone who doubts 'Hold Your Fire' era Rush needs to watch this.

  • @McElrone im pretty fond of the rio version however, i love how geddys bass sounds on this tour. its pretty epic

  • @McElrone Destroys the Hemisphere's version? That's a pretty crazy thing to say, especially considering they don't play the whole damn song. I however agree that they were better musicians and songwriters at this point in time than they were in 1978 and that they are even better now than they were in 1987.

  • Alex its not singing he is saying bullshit i wanna ear whats he say

  • fuck anybody that dislikes this video. the musicianship in this band is outstanding. THERE IS NO FUCKING DRUMMER BETTER THAN NEIL PEART

  • @kkid99302 Yeah, I agree...and who says Neil never improvises??!!!

  • @irena7777777 no one says that... the live drum solo changes every night

  • @BitchBeTrollinHard Disagree. I've read numerous times people saying that Peart is lifeless and boring (I, however, don't agree) and never changes his drums from album to live sets. With this said impro, I was merely pointing the contrary out. Don't get all 'precious' on me, I was only agreeing with what you said.

  • @irena7777777 Shut the fuck up you ass

  • @BitchBeTrollinHard Fuck off and troll you boring cunt

  • What is alex singing at the start?

  • Man I love Alex's face expression at @5:15 I laugh everytime!

  • At 3:50 - that is the most amazing drum/bass line ever!!

  • 1:45 is the beginning of genius.

  • 0:13 haha only rush would get that

  • excelent

  • why in the fuck didnt lifeson use a volume pedal in the beginning of the solo

  • @caseyjones67

Haha, I used to bitch about that too. It may be that he was fucking around being silly and didn't to his pedal-board in time. Or maybe he liked all the delay he was playing around with.

I *love* the strings under Alex's lonely, pensive solo at the beginning of that movement. Its spacey and makes me think of a fleet of massive capital ships in space. :B

  • @caseyjones67 Personally, I think it's the same reason I stopped doing it: the timing required to make it sound great distracts me/him from playing the solo as perfectly as possible.

  • It still amazes me how only three people can make such great music. So good.

  • As said before, the only band that sounds like Rush, is Rush. Knowone else would or could even attempt to do what Rush has done, without embarassing themselves. The only people that hate Rush, are people who don't know what a true musicians point of view band is. All musicians know and can't deny who the best is. RUSH!!!

  • One of Rush's greatests. a masterpiece. Even people who dislike Rush have to appreciate this instrumental.

  • the best hits

    fantastic power trio

    rush

  • It's amazing for me to watch this old Rush footage & see NP using two bass drums! This "Hold Your Fire" tour was probably the last time Peart utilized two bass drums. I believe he's better using one!

  • I would have to say Rush's first few albums were hard rock, with slight verging on metal, but progresssive metal is a lot light than most other forms of metal. Rush is neither Progressive, Metal, Hard Rock, or any other Genre, they are the Greatness of Rush. An example of a progressive rock band is Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. An example of Progressive Metal is Dream Theater. Rush is neither, but Rush is genreless and that makes them good.

  • @BeowulfVids Rush is Rush. Just as Pink Floyd is utterly unique, Rush is a genre unto themselves. I do think they're comparable too, insofar as they were both super-successful doing nothing more than purely following their respective (and weird!) muses. Kudos to them both.

  • Hail to the Prog Metal pioneers...a fantastic trio

  • @robert1mk yes yes, but rush is not a metal band..?

  • @passion4drums rush is... rush. there is no category for them.

  • @nakedchilli rush is rock.

  • @passion4drums Rush is Prog Rock.

  • @1JZW well no shit. either way it's still rock...

  • @passion4drums Compare AC/DC (A solid rock band) with Rush (A solid prog rock band). You can't say the styles are the same.

  • @1JZW rush is rock... i don't give a shit if they are progressive. i don't need to go into every little detail when you should get the point. i was never comparing anybody. it's just music get over it.

  • I'm loving how people don't realize that the "radioactive materials" "censorship" warning is a joke.

  • See, I've always wanted to hear Alex Lifeson sing, and I finally find something where he does, and it's been removed. FML

  • @elocrellim you can hear him doing a tiny bit of singing in the song prime mover(:

  • Anyone know what Lifeson says?

  • @Esperant3 He's muttering random words into a microphone that's not plugged in. Proof: nimitz.net/rush/faq3ans.html#123

  • Comment removed

  • MUSICA IDIOMA UNIVERSAL, ESTA ROLA LO DEMUESTRA SIN PALABRAS, CON CADA INSTRUMENTO, GRACIAS RUSH, SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO

  • One of my favorite Rush songs, but I don't care for the solo as much as other versions I have heard.

  • This DVD is my favorite from all the live performances of RUSH. It's just the best. The quality is awesome and all my favorite songs are in it

  • Alex plays like Jimi Hendrix, if Hendrix had played the violin.

  • Ohhhh yaaah , 2002, it was a hot summer night ,Millwakee amplitheater, cool breeze blowing in from the lake. I remember that one well.

  • There is no arguing in the comments for this song, thumbs up if that a first, btw this is a masterpiece

  • This s one of the most motivating instrumentals of all time. Any time I was bummed in my 20's (when this came out) I would listen to this and feel so much better INSTANTLY!

    RUSH RULES!

  • 6 people dislike Alex getting censored ... that or getting wacky with the whammy.

  • this is beautiful.

  • billy gibbons is not in that list also, too bad, who made that list anyway?

  • wow Alex totally brought it... god of guitar(well okay maybe next to Jimmy Paige)....Geddy always gets the attention but ALEX is GAWD

U2 and Rush don't even belong in the same sentence....Rush makes ART, that other band makes whatever will sell...and btw F the rolling stones no one gives a crap about that crappy publication

  • @BluChimera lol, Jimmy Paige is soooooo overrated, he sounds like shit live and misses half the notes...

  • Boner time!!!

  • Who the hell disliked this??? Alex should have done a rant on them!

  • Canadians rock.....awesome musicians

  • pure GENIUS what a song what a band man I saw them in 81 one of the best memories I will ever have

  • For a period of time, Alex used A guitar Called "Signature." It was canadian made and it employed Double Humbucker. the pickups were made by a company called "Evans." I own one, although it has a single humbucker. It is perfect for heavy sound. It is not EMG, but it does employ The "floyed rose II" Wammy. Alex always like the the Gibson ES, or PRS. He is great in every guitar he plays, Because he is one Smart player!

  • anybody know if those are emg pickups or something else?

  • @REALCougarsRmales mi friend does pickups look to me like dimarzios...i think they are super distortions...or one zones

  • Alex Lifeson has been underrated for too long!He should have been listed in the top 10 of the 100 Greatest Guitarists in the Rolling Stone poll. He was not even on the list! Until Rush is inducted into the Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone will forever be known as " Irrelevant Rolling Stone" to scores of fans!

  • @captinvideo1 No, actually, he was on the list...but in the lower 40s. Which I think we can all agree is WAY too low. (It was Slash who didn't end up on the list, BTW, but what do you expect? It's Rolling Stone.)

  • @rockisheaven Sorry to disagree with you . Lifeson is not on the Rolling Stone 100 greatest guitarists list. Neither is Robin Trower or Ted Nugent.

  • @captinvideo1 Lifeson is on the list. That list isn't credible anyway. Kurt Cobain and Jack White are in the top ten, for fuck sake!

  • @irena7777777 I think when making a judgement on a guitar player, you have to take more into account than just technique and skill. Songwriting should play a major role in making a judgment. I've seen plenty of technically skilled guitarists. But most of them are horrible song writers and are lacking creatively.

  • @NosferatuOfWorms Like Satriani and Vai?

  • @irena7777777 No more along the lines of most metal guitarists in today's music that are considered great.

  • @rockisheaven The Rolling stone Article and list is still available online and there are many comments on there about Lifeson being omitted as well as Slash.

  • @captinvideo1 Ah, thanks for clearing that up! I must have been thinking of another list.

  • @rockisheaven I have checked the Rolling Stone List a dozen times. Lifeson is not on this list. A number of people have told me that he is. He is not - I wish it were otherwise! Peart is # 2 on the recent RS poll on the top 100 drummers though!

  • @captinvideo1 The important list is in Modern Drummer...Neil is always # 1, voted by musicians and people!!

  • @adnoHis1 Yes but my point was that Alex has never gotten his due.Neil is always voted #1 which he is for sure! Geddy is usually picked as one of the greatest bass players too. Alex is easily one of the best guitarists that ever walked on this Earth!

  • I fucking love the look on Alex's face at 5:16, he's just like, Holy shit I'm a beast.

  • Comment removed

  • Neil Peart - Chuck Norris

    Deal with it

  • @MrNusecus Neil Peart > Chuck Norris

    more like it

  • @aspasiz i was gonna put that, but i thought i'd get trolled to shit and i cba

  • 2:58 - 3:30. Bass and drums.

    Wut.

  • Ever notice how the first thing Canadians do is bring up the United States?

  • @Aelia12 Yes, and as a Canadian myself I think that is so sad as well as stupid. It was the US of A that recognized the genius of Rush and put them on the world stage for all to see. There wasn't one record company in Canada even willing to sign them. Sad indeed... hell yeah USA!!!

  • Geddy's hair looks like a coonskin hat

  • Rush spells: p-e-r-f-e-c-t-i-o-n

No fancy hair, no stupid so called glam clothing, but arts and crafts pur sang from 3 top notch musicians. They really earned every miligram of success they ever had !

  • This band puts the the stones to shame.

  • Outside of the U.S.? You're totally clueless.

  • ahh man im learning that bass solo at 3:50 this week, its perty beast

  • The Vocal has been deleted?? WTF??

  • According to the new US Census, there is about 308 million Americans. There is only 116,331 views of this incredible video....That means there are at least 307 million and some change Americans who are musically deprived....Help a fellow American out and make them take the time to watch this....Lets stamp out music illiteracy!

  • @jimmymac63 Er, dude, what about Canada?

And Europe, Asia, the Polynesian Islands and Antarctica... etc?

There's a lot of penguins needs some Rush!

  • @TreyRoque Umm, the rest of the world has it right bro! We only seem to be short in this area in America! Fuck the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! It should burn to the ground!!!!!!

  • @jimmymac63 The thing is, not everyone who watched the video is from the USA, like myself. So, instead of helping only your fellows, we should be spreading Rush around the world! What do you say?

  • @linuxjl Again, lol..Most of the rest of the world has it right! Every person I have met outside of the US LOVES rush. Of course, I want more people to listen to them. But if you were an ice cream salesman, would you concentrate on Alaska? Or the Virgin Islands? :)

  • @jimmymac63 Well said buddy, and sorry, I didn't read the other comment below... still, back to subject, I've got many friends who don't give a damn to rock, or to any kind of good music. That's why I said there's many people on other places around the world who need to see the beauty of Rush, and other groups as well.

  • @jimmymac63 Outside the US? If it wasn't for Cleveland Ohio, in the US you wouldn't have ever heard rush! The US founded Rush :)

  • I'm a die hard Rush fan, but this is probably my least favorite of Alex's guitars. This guitar sounds great for songs like Time Stand Still, but for this it doesn't quite work for me.

  • @jptheguitardude what guitar is this?

  • @waffelcone It's by a company called Signature. I believe they're a Canadian company.

  • @Thompsongs okay thanks haha just curious.

  • @waffelcone My pleasure!

  • @waffelcone I have a guitar just like Alex's Signature Aurora here. Check out my page, I have a demo video of it.

  • 3:50 - 3:53 O.o

  • awesome! a 2112/la villa strangiato medly

  • It's not really censorship, just more of a joke. They probably thought no one that bought the tape would think he was funny. Imagine that, he's fucking hilarious.

  • Happy New Year Rush fans. We are listening to this really loud right now, and can confirm that anytime, anywhere - Rush ROCK ;)

  • @saintrobski You got that right. Greetings from Australia...wish they'd come out here sometime!

  • Have read that Clockwork Angels is going to be a concept album. I will be happy with anything new that Rush does, but I really would love to see songs like this done once again.

  • I've always loved Neil's drum kit from this tour.

  • I hate any kind of censorship!

  • @STARAXE1A It was just a joke...the guys in Rush being goofy.

  • Not digging Alex using the whammy in this version too much. Oh well, it was the 80s.

  • That was a toe tapper :) check out my RUSH covers hey, if ya like :p

  • coke is good

  • When I hear Geddy Lee on the solo section playing his brand of ethereal, atmospheric synths and textures, it makes me proud to love Power Windows. I DO think the digital synths made Rush sounds a bit tinny compared to the nice fat analog synthsizers pre-1984, but the chords and songwriting is there. I grew up loving synths because of Geddy Lee and Nick Rhodes, and both are never given credit for their greatness.

    Much thanks for posting.

  • Who the hell dislikes Rush? Losers.

  • These three are ALWAYS flawless in concert (every time I've seen them and every video I've seen). But, the really amazing thing is that Alex Lifeson is so incredibly good, but he's never talked about among the great guitarists. Why? Well, first, it's a crowded field. But, mainly, it's because Neil Peart is arguably the best drummer ever to pick up the sticks, and Geddy Lee is also considered one of the best bass players of all time. How often is the lead guitar not the main weaponry in a band?

  • Comment removed

  • I was there for this tour and it was brilliant

i even appear on the video for 1 second :0)

  • RIGHT LET'S STOP MESSING ABOUT!!

Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.

The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!

    Does anyone else agree?

  • @ecapa0020 Ok, i agree with the majority of what you have stated, except for the part about U2. I am not saying you said anything pertaining to you liking them or not, but nonetheless, U2 wasn't formed very long after Rush therefore I don't think they were so influenced by Rush that without them they would have been "out of their depth", and they're very talented, all of them. Mcfly i couldn't care less about on the other hand. But I do agree with you on most other points though.

  • @ecapa0020 I do agree, the new bands these days don't seem to focus on scales of any kind and go with what they think is cool. Though it most often times turns out bad. U2 is quite old by the way.

  • @ecapa0020 Well Said !!!!!

  • it looks like alex is saying suck a cock or something when they block it out

  • They rock so hard it fucking hurts. Make it stop!

  • Alex's solo at 2:40 is... proof that he is the best guitarist in the world

  • i never get tired of that song

  • 0:16

it should have said "censtored to piss 90% of the youtube viewing community that are going to watch this someday"

  • Why does Lifeson play the infamous solo perfect at Pink Pop Festival. I have never heard him play it better than at that concert (and he hurt his finger during that 79 tour). I actually think the guitar he used during that concert was beautiful. Does anyone know what guitar that was at the Pink Pop Festival? Anyway, any comments????

  • @Markcip1 Gibson ES335 hollow body I think.

  • @Markcip1 It was a Gibson 335, as apposed to his usual 355.

I agree. Pink Pop was his best performance ever.

  • Geddy said in an interview that Alex isnt saying anything, they just had the mic muted the whole time and thought it would be funny if they put signs in the video saying that.

  • Not too many drummers can play a reverse drum roll, especially back when it was written

  • at .59 hahahaha

  • Geddy plus Wal Bass= Music

  • i bet alex was talking about like drugs or somthing

  • God sent these fuckers to the Earth.

  • what was alex saying that we werent supposed to hear?

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123

I own this video, and the editing is absolutely puritanical. The vocals for "In the Mood" were silenced (!). I'm guessing Alex probably spewed some filth along the lines of "my, what a corking good time! After the show I just may imbibe in a brandy Alexander in the company of an unbetrothed member of the fairer sex!"

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123

Its supposed to be an inside joke or something like that.

  • What do you possibly listen to after this that wouldn't sound completely lame??? Oh...right....more RUSH!!

  • I'll fucking Love This Song!!

  • 2:47 Alex OMG How did he play that :O

  • @LivingInTheLimeligh7 many years of practice

  • Should be required listening for kids that want to be musically inspired

  • Excellent quitar solo!

  • Best band ever, nuff said!!!

  • lol I love Alex's face at 5:16

  • I bet alex made a mistake at 4:16, look at geddy's reaction. It's like" shit, he got it wrong". He got too carried away jumping around the stage.

  • @TOM2741 oh, it's 4:26

  • @TOM2741 got what wrong??

  • as much as I love the music, the light show absolutely amazing. the couple of times I have seen them live in concert; they have one hell of a stage show and presence it a sight to behold... RUSH FOREVER

  • I find it interesting that people keep going "omg why iz alex cenzor'd?" when if you either a) knew how this song worked live or b) had the idea to look back a few pages of comments, you'd know that it's a joke and that Alex is actually babbling nonsense into a microphone that's turned off.

  • @Blasterman95 no way lol thats funny as hell
