I did D W L in DRAG @ the JUNGLE lounge in Nashville TN. In a BLACK BEE-HIVE wig, a torn & tattered wedding dress and tons of mascara running down my face! it was an off-the-beaten-path, a few blocks up from Broadway where all the honky-tonks where. so quite often the BIG guys whould slip on down the road and check out a drag version of Minnie, Dolly or Patsy Cline! Reba & Wynnona used go there so did Merle Haggert and his posse..well everybody has @ one time or another

You know what? I don't care for this..sounds like a lot of screaming (belting) but mostly screaming. Some of the notes even sound a little off; either over or under the intended note. She may be great in a broadway show, a good singing actress, but I'll take Barbra or Celine any day for everyday listening. Oh, and Liza, while her voice isn't as "good" as Audra's, Liza is one hell of a performer. I'll take her too.
@jnetusil Broken ribs will make one gasp for breath when singing.... LOL, I don't think she needs to learn anything. As Evilqueen1985 pointed out, it's good enough for 3 Tony awards (the 4th was for a play w/o music). I'll add 2 Grammys to that in 2009 for Best Opera Recording & Best Classical Album. I think she has less to learn than you do, lol. You may not be able to wrap your brain around it, but it's good enough to be highly respected in the industry and nail these awards.
I love when people post comments about how whomever is in the video can improve their performances. Im just thinking out loud here, but if you all know how to sing it better shouldnt you be at Carnegie Hall? Oh and maybe have 4 Tony awards under your belt... But I could be wrong about that...
@Evilqueen1985 Probably because by extroverting their thoughts they learn something from the performance. As singers we are taught not to impersonate voices we admire because we will copy the good and the bad. There is no such thing as a perfect voice that ever lived. A person's accomplishment does not suddenly prevent them from being able to make a flaw. Furthermore there are many people out there with "abnormal" instruments that can get away with improper phonation (ie: most famous belters).
there is no comparison, it's a different style; each one of us has our own preference; no good or bad; ususally the original version or the most popular version is favored; oaky and the emotion may be different and not so appealing to the average audience

A perfect example of venturing too far out of one's repertoire. Good voice, but WAY too controlled for this song. Watch Streisand at 21 on the Judy Garland Show for a few pointers, Audra. Reminiscent of Liz Torres (the resident Puerto Rican on All in the Family) who made a brief comic career after that show's demise by intentionally interpreting disco tunes of the time ala Beverly Sills, except Audra was apparently serious here. Nauseating.
@hesstgmc too controlled? did you even watch from 3:09 on? she rocked it. Though I do love streisand's rendition, I personally think this is brilliant.
And I don't know how "Audra" and "nauseating" could be used in the same thought unless it's: "It's nauseating how much I love Audra McDonald"
that's so cool in most of this song audra seems to be paying tribute to barbra with the way this song is arranged and singing bits of the music that makes me dance and my man, genius and well sung audra!only knew of her from watching private practice but man can she sing!
you cannot compare barbra streisand with audra!! audra is schooled classically and barbra isnt and audra shows it... don't get me wrong, i am a huge fan of barbra streisand but you simply cannot compare voices and techniques as barbra and audra are 2 way diffrent kind of singers...

@lilithmoon1979 Can't compare Barbera wth Audra 2 different singers, there is no one who could sing this better than Barbera! She was very sloppy in the middle of the song. Im a perfectionist when it comes to music and she is great but she'd never have passed the test to get into broadway with this version, they were perfectionist then. Barbera would and did blow his out the water on so many different levels. Now she has the soul, FYI Barb went to school 4 voice with one of the best teachers.
@cammicty - audra has her own style. She's getting the meaning of the lyrics across without overwhelming the listener. Her voice is good and powerful without being too much. And it's not that often we get to hear a soprano interpreting this music. And live music is not about perfection. If you want that, buy a studio produced cd where every nuance is obliterated by OVER production. Cheers.
@cammicty Barbra Streisand took a total of 1 voice lesson in her entire life. She talks about it in many interviews. She went once, disagreed with what they tried to teach her and never went back. Audra has a degree in classical voice studies from Julliard. Julliard! Not to mention the fact that she HAD gotten into broadway and has 4 Tony wins and 2 Nominations to prove it.
I love them both for both similar and different reasons. 2 of the best voices of all time.
@carr0760 She can sing I'm not denying that, but Barbera blows her out the water when it comes to singing this song. Also, her Tony's and Nominations could never stand to Barbera's! Many people study at Juliard, just because one studies there, does not make them the best. EX: Alicia Keys also studied there, but she's not as good as Audra, in my opinion, she shouts more than she sings. Her piano playing, well I've set in auditions, with young Asian children who play better. Audra does sing well!
@respectthequeendom Well, if you mean on iTunes, Audra McDonald is copying Barbra Streisand's version of the song, so look up 'Barbra Streisand Down With Love'.
@book021296@respectthequeendom yeah the CLOSEST version is in Barbra's latest songbook. But Audra uses Mr Snow and Let's Call the Whole thing off...makes it slightly different. You can use Babs' version and get a good transcriber to make up the difference. It's been on my list of things to do for a while now. lol. I want it BADLY.
She should stick to classical. She is not a belter and this does not sound great. I'd rather hear Streisand any day and I believe she is overrated as well.
@book021296 She does but she did study to be an opera singer in high school and it's been known that she prefers the classical tone above other styles.
amazing amazing tribute to BARBRA, especially the medley she went into at 2:25 and yet she came up with her own style, i love it love it love and im sure Barbra would be grateful, i love Audra!
those upbeat final minutes are a 'tribute' to barbra streisand's interpretation. I like audra, but i do think it odd that she does so much barbra imitation - the duet with patti lupone that mimics barbra and judy, the substantial use of barbra's early recordings. Barbra's versions weren't original, but how many other people have recorded 'a sleeping bee' and 'any place i hang my hat is home' and 'down with love'... I like audra a lot, but again just find it odd.
I sing this type of music and sing all these songs -- as do others I know who sing these genres. A good song is a good song. I don't think it's accurate to say Audra imitates Barbra. What you could say is that she sings some of the same songs. But, even at that, it's really very few she sings. You just happened to notice these few.
I love that she brought her own vocal style and training to the song. You can hear the classical/opera training, yes her musical charm and acting also comes through. I have yet to hear Audra sing something poorly.
Eh, I seriously doubt it's a matter of her classical/opera training. She can sing like everyone else, but she chooses not to. Almost single-handedly she formed her own nitch in vocal music which is sort of like new classical. It's difficult to identify this type of singing style, especially for this song, with anyone else. Especially not Barbra. This is why Audra is amazing.
This is amazing; sung with real feeling, heart-break and resentment. The lyrics suit this kind of slower rendition more than they do a peppy version, I think.

oooooooooooooh oh yeah she has a ring. she wears it in pics sometimes. like if you google some of her images you can see it but its real rare. i truly doubt if her and her husband make all of that money and she not have aring. haha.
