no im from canada, i went through scranton to see the steamtown mall. downtown scranton was like a scene out of a zombie apocalypse movie, except the zombies are better kept
Having spent a considerable amount of time in Scranton and the surrounding area, I appreciate all the little references that the show makes about life there, and they're always dead-on correct.
I love Scranton, and miss it a lot. It's the kind of place where you can sit and watch the grass grow and still be perfectly content with the world.
The cool thing about the show is all the little things about Scranton that you'd only notice if you grew up there. Like stickers for Froggy 101, local bars and restaurant mentions, a sticker for the old Globe.
I wonder what the average IQ is for someone who frequently watches The Office? I bet its higher than most other shows. Not that that really matters. Well It kind of does.
@MattsMisc I actually agree with that. But I personally put it this way. If a guy doesn't like The Office he definitely got some serious intelligence/humor issues
@MattsMisc Its a fantastic show, but honestly its comedy doesnt require that much intelligence. I feel like that's more curb your enthusiasm or arrested development's territory.
@MattsMisc That's what I like to believe as well. The only people I know who are really into the show are at the same time the smartest people I know. It's quite a clever show indeed.
@MattsMisc Its not that hard to understand, most of the show revolves around Michael being stupid, I dont think it takes a smart person to understand what's going on. Just because someone watches the show a lot doesn't necessarily mean they're smarter than people who watch other shows.
@MattsMisc I doubt there's that much of a difference. The fact is The Office is just a newish form of comedy that really caught on. People are sick and tired of traditional TV sitcoms with laughtracks and one-liner jokes. Seinfeld was so popular because it was a new kind of comedy when it came out. At least new to the general public.
However this doesn't explain why shows like 2 and a half men are still popular. :\
@karkiuz there is a couple i saw one in newyork the ine in scranton does not exist but they mith move there for buisness causes there is about 6 dunder miflin buldings
I live in Scranton, PA. All the people he was talking about at the "mall" where not from Scranton. I can't say I know anyone who actually watched the Office.
I think this highlights the difference between Britain and America because both the shows deal with the theme of being stuck in a boring town - sorry Scranton, but it's definitely a theme. But whereas the people of Scranton has embraced the show lovingly, the amount of resentment built up for Slough increased after the TV show. It is the definition of the dead-end English commuter town.
I'm sorry but before, no one gave a toss about Slough at best. The Office highlighted the fact it was a dead end commuter town and then it gained infamy.
That's what happens with successful shows where the setting is a character in its own right, eg, the petty conservatism of the English south coast in Fawlty Towers, or the violence of Baltimore as brilliantly showcased in The Wire. Before such programmes, only nearby residents can make those observations but afterwards everyone else can too.
@PurushaDesa you obviously have never been to scranton.. its not some dead end town its really beautiful and nice.. some of their facts were wrong including it being some dead end town. come to a city before you insult it
Actually, it's a valid point about how a successful film and/or television production can change the public's attitude toward or level of awareness of a certain region. What's so weird about it?
@swantonbomb967 Yes, thank you. I've been informed. By many many many people. In case you couldn't tell, my comment has been up at the top there for over a year now, so you can bet I've gotten plenty of replys from know-it-alls attempting to burst my bubble. It's been done. Mission accomplished.

As someone who lives in the viewing area that includes Scranton, we are HUUUUGELY obsessed. The fact that the show wants to include the area businesses in prop drops alone is incredible. But we had the Office Convention two years ago, and for like 4 months ahead of time it was big news.
Nope, but Scranton itself is an hour away from me, and I live in the middle of the Poconos not too far from the Appalachian Trail. So to get to the grocery store takes 20 minutes alone. Nonetheless, Scranton often hosts the big Office release parties, meet and greets, the Office Convention, and so on. And like I said, they have prop drops all the time, so most of the set decor (like the Froggy Sticker) is actually from Scranton businesses.
