The movie made a fortune. Davis expected the Oscar but I think Annie Bancroft was unbeatable in "The Miracle Worker" because of the gravity of the material. But Crawford should absolutely also been nominated. She had the quieter, less showy role but she was magnificent. Davis and Crawford disliked each other on many levels and were nervous wrecks around each other but they were living legends for a reason. They were totally capable and totally professional. The film stands up well today.
Joan crawford played a very deep and emotional role, obviously Bette obviously did too,but Joan stood out becuase she wasnt a parody of herself like Bette cam off as.
Wow--pretty complicated making a picture, isn't it. Makes you wonder how they ever get made--lots of talents involved. Bette is a actress to her fingertips--notice how a jolt of 'electricity/energy' goes through her when the camera is on.
@DysfunctionalDoll004 Oh WOW really??? Is he in the frame where Bette Davis is reading over the script with someone? Which one is he?? Oh, and you're very welcome =)
@DysfunctionalDoll004 Wow! That's a crazy coincidence, my late uncles restaurant did all the catering on this film and setup lunches and dinners everyday for all the actors and crew! He had a very impressive collection of autographed memorabilia and some great stories!!! :)
@PinkPoodleSkirt77 OH!!! and it was a silver tray from my uncles restaurant that they used during rehearsals for the "bird on the plate" scene, hahaha... unfortunately, his poor tray wasn't the one used in the finished film... darn, LOL!
A sinister movie, but a good one... I just bought it on DVD...I hadn't seen it for years...and, even today, it still creeps me out. It is great to see these stellar actors together.
I First saw this movie as a small child. It creeped me out a little. As a young teen/adult interested in filming & raised on classic films & mysteries it still creeped me out but I loved these two special actresses from watching so many of their other exellent movies. Now that I'm much older, I haven't had the opportunity to watch Baby Jane or Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. As a rule Horror movies don't scare me, but Bette & Joan made it look so real. They are two of the best. Peace be w/ you.
the story blanche told jane on the beach about what happened that night doesn't seem consistent with flashbacks. i mean if jane was let out of the car to open gate because she was too drunk, who ran over blanche ?
@rockyboyjan1999 I think the story was that when Jane went to open the gate, Blanche punched the gas pedal in an attempt to kill her - she missed and crashed the car, and Jane ran off - Blanche was paralyzed in the accident but managed to crawl out of the car and lie down in front of it, so it looked like Jane was the one who tried to kill her. That's why Blanche apologizes at the end of the film; she made Jane feel guilty her entire life for something she never did.
@rockyboyjan1999 Blanche wasn't run over, she was driving and tried to run Jane over, but Jane got out of the way, the car crashed with Blanche behind the wheel, and she was crippled.
That was fun to watch! thanks for posting! I was one of the ones that cried straight through watching this movie....granted I was pretty young ( and babysitting) at the time! i admire the work of both Bette and Joan! great ladies both! thanks again for posting!
The show started with 30 minutes of clips from her films, ending with the 'What a dump!' line. She then walked onto stage sat down, puffed a cigarette and said this. A microphone was passed around for people to ask questions. My friend Peter asked if she had done her own makeup for Baby Jane, her reply was "Yes, what makeup artist would have wanted his name on the credits for doing that!'
I remember other comments which I will post tomorrow. I am currently watching 'Mrs Skeffington'.
Another thing she said was in response to the question 'Were you nervous on your first night?' Bette said 'Which first night are you talking about!' Then a little old lady asked 'Who was the most handsome leading man you ever worked with?' Bette said 'Without a doubt Errol Flynn!' Oh said the woman 'I liked him' Bette replied 'And I am sure he would have liked you!'
@JoeWPratt i am so jealous. i would have loved to have been there. there is not a week goes by that i dont watch at least one of her films or listen to a radio play. skeffington is my favourite. i have just watched dangerous ( again)!
Quite incredible, I had the great fortune to see Bette Davis at the Floral Theatre in Scarborough in 1975, when she was doing her tour of Britain. thank you Miss Oddy.
Just amazing !!! Thank you !!! This is when filmmaking was filmmaking.......not computers and green screens.....I SO enjoyed this,,,,,actors really earned their money back then !!!
No, it's not Joseph Cotton, although it does sound like him. It is the same man who narrated the trailer for Baby Jane...the same voice is heard in other promotional shorts and trailers from the 60's.
I'm more impressed by Joan's subtle work in the film than Bette's work.

Bette Davis: "But ya ARE! Ya ARE in that wheelchair, Blanche!"
Love it.
