Although I am not particularly fond of the minimal sets & actors as orchestra in this version of Sweeney, it is the new style...They did the same for Sondheim's Company...And I have a friend who managed to nab parts in both, due to her being able to play an instrument in addition to sing & act. So I guess for some, there are definite advantages to this new style of theater. (I'm sure it saves the producers tons of money, too.)
Nothing I like better than watching someone's tv play the video I'm watching here. You obviously figured out to transfer the video from the video camera, yet you couldn't figure out how just pull the video from the tv signal...
I'm not a big fan of the revival. The music just doesn't have the same impact as with an orchestra and I never like seeing instruments on stage...except in Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof.
Can I ask a question, that will probably not get answered correctly, as it wud probably ruin the show for people seeing it on tour... But i'll ask anyway.. Will SOMEONE PLEASE (!!!!!!) explain what the hell is up with the little white coffin, and what happens in the show with it, etc.!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, because there is no set, where does everything take place, e.g. for "God that's good", etc. PLEASE TELL ME, SOMEONE!!!!!
when I caught the tour in January I got to go backstage (yay stage management classes having connections) and we talked about the coffin thing. Essentially it's meant to be a symbolic/ ambiguous prop that changes significance throughout the show. It falls into the catagory on "this is one way to do sweeny with a low low budget."
the movie and the play are so different and people need to get over it. there are so many things that you can do in a movie that you cant in a play and vice versa. they are both amazing in their own way and people should be glad that they aren't identical.
*Sings* "This is possibly the worst I have seen her!" I don't argue the talent of Patti Lupone, but while her singing was good, it very much seems she's just skating through the performance. Sort of: "La,La,La *just singing*...la,la,la...no real PERFORMING...la *getting near the end...crescendo...la,la,la!" Just NOT the part for her. And Lord! I believe she was nominated for a Tony.
Why do people keep comparing one actor to another? Just appreciate what makes them different. Stop trying to say "Depp is superior to Cerveris because blah blah blah" or whatever. Sweeney Todd is awesome, hands down!
that's bs. I saw this live in the theatre and the emotion was DEFINITELY there.I love Johnny Depp, don't get me wrong. But just because its different, it doesn't mean it's not as good
i prefer the movie, there seems to be more emotion. But I suppose you cant really see the expressions in a musical which is why i think is better in a film. johny cannot sing aswell but he pulls it off so much better.
Every single version I have seen of Sweeney Todd brings something new to the table. I don;t think one is worse than the other...rather they are just different interpretaions. And I have thoughrouly enjoyed each one...
this cast is just so amazing...there was no way the movie could ever live up to it.
not to mention that, as brbcool8 said, manoel felciano is a god, and the kid who replaces him in the movie is the most mediocre child actor i've ever seen.
I saw this play last night with a touring production. SUCKS. The concept sucks. Who's the moron that thought this play could be done without an orchestra or a chorus? Truly, truly sucks. Watch it on youtube instead.
ya i know me too. the line about his arm being complete again flat-out sucks. he looks like the guy from frankenstein. not to mention mrs. lovett sucks.
Super disappointed that they give "but everyone does it, and seldom as well" to Sweeny here instead of Mrs. Lovett. It's so much better when Angela Lansbury says that with a shrug. It puts some emphasis on that really important line that gets totally lost when sweeny just swallows it at the end of the song here.
I was petrified by the stage show, I think I'm going to be even more scared by the movie though. It should be a great movie; it's a great story, great music plus Tim Burton has done a great job on scary movies so far.
Len Carrou, and Angela Lansbury, defined the parts. I've seen both shows, and the revival was D.O.A. a total waste of time. The production budget, would have been better spent on something new.
i am a young person and im a bit sickened by this theory that we only like the story coz johnny depp is gonna be in it. i came to find out about the stage show / musical from going to the exhibit in the london dungeons. i didnt even know there was a gonna be a film wiv johnny depp in it!
Cerveris is decent as Todd... but LuPone's attempt at an accent isn't realy... well, not good. And she shows little to know emotion in the funniest song of the whole show! The music doesn't even sound as good as it should - the original show, though I admit it was SUPPOSED to be different - had a score that really needen't be tampered with. I understand these actor's can only play so many instruments, but it doesn't sound scary and intimidating so much as... whimpy.
What the hell? What the hell is Ms, Lovett wearing? Cerveris is alright as Todd, but I prefer the original...I am a little freaked out by Ms. LuPone's appearence. I cannot get over the fact that her portrayal of Ms. Lovett is all sexy and seductive...she will never hold a candle to Mrs. Lansbury.
her performance in the concert version was so much better. in this one the director tried to make it darker, and since cerveris plays sweeney a lot darker it only leaves patti to make her character different. When patti is playing off of George Hearn it's a whole lot better.
im looking forward to the film version but in a way im dreading it...a tim burton movie starring johnny depp? i can see it now- every teeny bopper becoming obsessed with the musical and ruining it for the rest of us who actually appreciate it and know that its been around for years.
i'm confident that burton's production won't be anything as ill-conceived as this one... burton did a great job with the sleepy hollow film... the only problem may be johnny depp... he tends to get overly mannered w/ his characters, sometimes to the point where the viewer becomes confused re: motivations... the rest of the cast, though, looks great!
It's worthless to compare the original production to the revival. They each have a distinct directorial take and conceptual design. Hal Prince had big orchestra and big sets. John Doyle took the minimalist approach with an instrument for each actor and a single piece set. I saw this revival and it was brilliant. Doyle rightly won best director of a musical this past year. To compare the two won't work though, they're practically different shows; each good in its own right.
Patti Lupone will never, EVER equal Mrs. Lansbury. She can't hold a dialect worth shit! However, for Cerveris this is a definite improvement from John Wilkes Booth.
The whole actor musician thing doesn't appeal to me at all - the music is completely underplayed, it needs a much much bigger band!!! It can be so much richer.
they did the medley cause they wanted to show off everybody who was nominated and to show the actors playing the instruments and all that. namely manoel, patti, and michael cerveris. gotta love patti and her triangle :) i think it was a good choice for the tonys...and i love patti's "worst pies in london" definitely not angela lansbury but a very good job
I love the revival. It's a comlpletely fresh take on a really great show. I like Patti better than Angela, cause sh'e not just silly, she's... well, almost evil, and she's much more mad than Angela played her. Also, the minimalist style it was done in is very striking and terrifying. They're still following what the original goal of the show was, to see if you can scare a modern theatrical audience, and I think they've succeeded.
One can't compare Patti LuPone and Angela Lansbury-their interpretations are so different! So sad about it closing...I'm so sad, guess I can't see it again! :-(
Act II Johanna would have be AWESOME!! accept there is nothing for Lovett in that song. A little priest would be good, but I think they were trying to convey that the show has an orchestra ON STAGE and they ALL act, so I dont know, this is cool.
I utterly love the revival, I think they shouldn't have gone for a medley. I dunno, they've always buggedme big-time, since I've had to play really bad arrangements of musical medleys in band for years ;-) Plus, it definately didn't show off the prowess of this excellent cast. Either "A Little Priest" or the Act II version of "Johanna" would have probably been better, IMHO.
With all due respect to Patti Lupone, she can't hold a candle to Angela Lansbury.... nor can the rest of this cast hold a candle to the original cast.
Oh well. At least I have the tape of it to watch if I want
The tape of what? The revival bootleg or the DVD with the original cast?
Idk though, I don't think you can really compare the original to the revival; they're completely different takes. I have to say both are relatively equally brilliant in my book.
But nonetheless - it's official - Sweeney Todd is closing Septemeber 3rd.
Thanks for posting. I freak out watching anything to do with Sweeney Todd. And you really can't compare the Original Broadway Cast to the Revival to are to separate things.
