  • Sooooo much respect for this. I can't ink for balls, let alone with a metal nib.

  • @milkjamjuice Thanks! At first it feels funky, using nibs. But now I'm as used to it, as I am with a tech pen.

  • so he's trying to hit her

  • can i ask why you used the score that went to signs(M. Night Shyamalan's movie)

it really doesnt suit your video, but i like the vid none the less and i like the kitty cat. :3

  • @ZekeNLutherfan1995 Thanks! I like the music because it had the "creepie" mood I wanted to go with zombie story I was illustrating. A nice Danny Elfman/ Beetlejuice vibe to it.

  • @ZekeNLutherfan1995 ... And because of the film "The Happening" came out at the time. So "The Inking" was decided for the title.

  • @MATTCOSSIN that cool then, just wondering :)

  • THE KITTY!!!!!

  • Don't get offended but I feel like this lacks of feeling, and the characters should be more expressive, their faces are just too plain...

  • @Miganishi , My attempt was to capture "subtle" expressions. Not emulating the, oft times, over-acting expressions used in manga (which my editors don't like). And it just wouldn't fit what was written in the script. Cut me a little slack, these 3 pages are a year and a half old. Heh,heh, Please check out some of my newer (more "expressive") pages at my deviant art galleries. Thanks for commenting.

  • @MATTCOSSIN Oh and I don't think they're plain or inexpressive at all! I also agree with your comment about the "over-acting" expressions so often used in manga. And sorry for being so sycophantic, you totally don't need ME to stick up for you! Heheh! All the best from the U.K!

  • @vollsticks Glad you like it! Thanks again!

  • I dig your work, but I have a question. I use the 102 crow quill nibs for inking, but I heard the maru nibs last 4 times longer. Have you tried other maru nibs made by tachikawa and zebra? Also, where online did you buy the deleter brand from?

  • @verastegui , Thanks!! I'm not sure if the maru nibs last longer, but I can tell you that I inked 22 comic pages before I needed to change it with a new one. Truthfully, I could have changed it sooner, though. I've never tried any other maru nib besides DELETER. But I have used Zebra and NIKKO 'G' nibs. Mostly the Zebra G. Good NIB! As for the DELETER purchase... it was a few years back, so I can't remember. Bought my last ones at Kinokuniya, in L.A.

  • @MATTCOSSIN Thanks for the response! 22 pages? Ok, that is great! I have only go as far as 5 pages on average with the 102 Crow Quill, so it's impressive.

  • @verastegui , Glad to help! I guess the Japanese build their nibs to last! Most manga artists are 'work horses' after all!

  • @MATTCOSSIN Oh man I get through those 102's like no-one's business! I do like a fatter, more brush-like line, though. Your line-weights are more consistent. I'm impressed with 22 pages! I'm like verastegui- 5 pages per nib but sometimes 3 or 4! I recently bought some Deleter G nibs and I quite like them. You can get a slightly fatter line (than the Hunt 102) from them but I'm not totally into their "feel"...they are built like bloody tanks though, aren't they?!?!? Really liking your art A LOT!!

  • @vollsticks Thanks! I probably could switch up the nibs sooner than 22 pages, since they do get a little dull. But yeah, I'm a little gentler with 'em.

  • @verastegui I'm sure you probably know by now, but Akadot Retail have an AMAZING on-line selection of Deleter stuff. Sorry for the late reply but I only just stumbled across this video!

  • @vollsticks Oh yeah, I did get a starter set from Akadot. Pretty good stuff.

  • randum but nice video :)

  • @zeester0101, glad you liked the video. I'm working on a new one, that showcases my work on the new mini-series I'm working on for Boom Studios. "Hunter's Fortune".

  • This is a great video. I watched it because I'm having some difficulty with my own Deleter pen. The ink just blobs onto the paper and won't come out smoothly at all (If it does come out onto the paper). Do you have any tips?

  • Thanks, tatsuninja! I posted a reply earlier, but for some reason, Youtube will NOT allow me to make comments on my videos.... The ink I use is BLACK CAT from Dic Blics (or Blics, as it is now called). Its really nice ink. Really rich blacks. Dries very quickly. It does, however, tend to crust up at the bottle cap top if not cleaned.

  • I love how zombie kitty just attacks out of nowhere with cuddles. It was cute.

Liked pretty much everything you did here artisticly, both with how the video was set up and the actual inking parts, but I think it would have better served the purpose if you inked one character or panel and had captions explaining what you were doing.

Good job though. Where can I pick up this Zombie Tails?

  • @Klebkatt I posted a response 4 months ago... but for some reason YouTube didn't post them.... Hopefully this response works. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for the feedback. Its much appreciated! You can buy Zombie Tales by asking your local comic store to order it. Amazon may be selling the collected version.

  • Wow your art is just...wow and cool. I just got my new nib pen yesterday and i must admit its pretty difficult to use but, you inspired me to keep trying and praying i get as good as you.

  • @NanashiRoyale, Thanks for the generous words! Glad you liked the vid. Keep drawing and INKING! And continue to study the work of your favorite artists, and figure out WHY you like their work.

  • that was interesting, on teh near future i might start using nibs, i did once before, adn that was quite hard ot get the hands one, now after practisign drawing seriously, and not being a kid (lol) hope i have more patience and get rid of it

    keep ti goin on ;3

  • Thanks for the comment! It takes a little bit of patience to get the handle on it. But its well worth the practice. I like the maru nib, because I'm currently working smaller (paper size), so its much easier to ink small drawings. But at the same time, the maru can also get a very thick line. Master Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boy) is a shining example of this. BTW, very nice NASUNAGA household concept painting!

  • oh haha thanks alot ^^

and thanks for the points, it seems like its quite a nice nib, so ill most surely check it out =3

  • Is it really ok to use the nib pen in that way?

I already bought it but it seems that i'm kinda bit confused how to use it. Please reply back, MATTCOSSIN

  • Hey lawofmatthew, as far as using a pen nib to ink comic book art, comic book artists have been doing it for decades. The Japanese manga ka, still use these pens to ink. Some even use brush to ink line work. Using a nib isn't easy. Each kind responds a little differently to paper. Smooth paper makes it easier for the nib to glide across the surface. Also, the inside of the nib should usually face in the direction you are moving the pen. Almost like you are pulling it.

  • Thanks for posting! Feel free to ask more questions.

  • Okay, And that noises start from 1:46 when you did the outline inking (not the sound of the machine). Is that a noise coming out from the pen, because when i did just lke you did, my pen just make that voice as well.

I'm just SO afraid that my pen is gonna break.

  • It depends how much pressure you place on the pen nib. But really, the nibs are stronger than they look. In this video I am using a small nib (Maru). Which produces very fine lines. Be careful not to move the pen sideways, because they nib may get caught on the paper, and spatter ink. Practice creating various line thickness, and pay attention to the sounds and feeling, to determine what is good. Its strange at first, because it is SO different that using tech pens.

  • Woah okay, Thanks a lot, i mean a LOT.

btw, Keep up the good work. I can see a bright future ahead of you.

Do you have a Deviantart? or a gallery?

  • I posted my Deviant art page.... but I think that Youtube has a problem with posting it... It won't show up on is page?!!! I'm posting this to see if it works.

  • Wow! I'm very impressed! You're really good, Matt! Keep the great work up!

I love the song, how you edited it and the cat :)

  • Thanks for watching, Claudia! The cat is Sergio. He loves to eat, so he is begging for me to feed him! I have him on a diet, because he was getting to fat. :-D

  • Haha xD Hope Sergio's diet will be successful :)

  • LOVE the music! i lawled ^w^. i miss my kitties back home!

  • Do you use Fountain pens?

  • I haven't used one in a very long time. I used to sketch with them, back in the day. Besides the inking tools I listed in the description box, I also use Micron Pigma pens and Japanese ZEBRA calligraphy pens. At least I THINK they're used for calligraphy. AND, of course, a brush.

  • very cool Matt!

    and yay! cat! :D

  • Thanks, Johnny!

  • Maybe he wants to do it too? He could have his own kitty zombie comic. LOL!

  • This is a cool video, an insight into the amazing world of inking. Cute kitty! LOL!

  • Thanks! Yeah, he's cute when he's NOT bumping my arm while I'm inking.
