  • This is the original version produced in 1982. I did not know that till now :-D

  • i read a lot of retarded comments like "this song is too speedy" or "jules version is better cuz it fit the mood of the song" or "jules mastered this song" and shit like these

now i don't wanna be a brainless hater like lot of you guys, everybody got his point right? but if i can give you advise: before you all talk about something, and in this case about music you better remember two things:

1st jules just sang on a slow piano

and 2nd the name of the song is mad world... not SAD world

  • i love Tears for Fears and saw them in a small venue in San Diego mid 90's and i am still amazed to this day of the lyrics , no one can touch them

  • i love ADAM LAMBERT VERSION!

  • The lyric is beautiful, the song is too but i prefere gary jules version. Tears for fears do this song too speed.

  • Why is there a guy dancing? Has he gone MAD?

  • Only the synths of the 80s can properly capture the despair, try as Gary Jules might.

  • good song but still not same as gary jules :/

  • @ Abolutedead...Would You Like The Full Lyrics To The Song You Fukn Numpty...Lyrics Dont Match The Song !!...Fukin IDIOT...He Sings Clear As A Bell..

Tears For Fears Were The Best About For A Few Years...If You Were A Teenager In The 80s...U Rem It All...Gr8 Time For Music...

  • @SykOtiKs ...How Can The Mood Be Wrong In The Original Track....U Deaf Sounding Prick...Its From The 80s FFS......WTF Age Are You ?

  • yeɑɑh, love this song. :)

  • this one of many great songs of the 80s'otherwise try kids in the kitchen .change in mood.

  • The singing is too quiet but it still is awesome.

  • this is the first and original version!

  • I commented on the re-make that I prefer the original because it has an edge and is angrier. I feel the new version is too mopey and depressed, and takes away the angry message behind the song. Someone told me I was a "dumdass" because the Gary Jules version "is the original".

    Oy.....Calgon take me away.

  • @railynnelson I saw your comment there and the "dumbass" reply. Crazy! It's like these people would insist an Elvis impersonator is really Elvis! Anyway, I posted a comment there too saying no one cares if they hate the 80's, whether they like it or not this song is an 80's baby! I'm sure they are still going to deny the facts ..yadidahh... more eye rolling from us...

  • he says it 2 fast and clearly sucks monkey dick

  • i hate the 80's, don't claw my eyes out with ur comments either, gets old

    gary jules mastered this song

  • @MrCodyMcG then, what r u doing here? get out, fast. go back to 1910, ur decade. hahaha!

  • good versioan, but Garys kinda feels sadder, and the way he sings it fits a wee bit more

  • Wypierdolcza melodia i zayebyste słowa : )

  • Love the dance moves of the guy outside, LOL! Awesome version of a great song.

  • @mrstrictlygm yeah Roland is dancing his ass off!

    Either that or he's rolling.

  • @mrstrictlygm i think you mean awesome original of a great song? :P

  • @kippetjeuh1 Oh, duh, I've always heard the Gary Jules version thinking it was his original song. Can't beleive I've never heard this great song by one of my favorite 80s bands,Tears for Fears until just now. I like both the Tears for Fears and the Gary Jules versions.

  • @mrstrictlygm yeah, same here.

  • Fantastic song.

  • i prefer this version . the gary jules and adam lambert version is too depressing . when people listen to this song they are often depressed so the nice melody brings up their mood. and just look at that dancing 8D

  • I SO prefer Gary Jules and Lamberts versions! This sounds like a bad modern pop version, I just don't like it. Though it's a very good song that they have written but I like Jules and Lamberts much better ;)

  • @SolitaryShark except that they didnt write anything they stole it!

  • @shampayne69 Reaaaally? Who did they steal it from?

  • @shampayne69: WHO did they 'steal' it from? This is THEIR song, produced long before all other versions of it. Please, who do you think they stole it from?

  • @shampayne69 Then who did write it? I've heard it was tears for fears...

  • One of the best songs ever written.

  • is it me or do tears for fears do most of the songs for donnie darko?

  • Prefer this to Adam Lamberts.

  • gary jules hit it perfect, adam lambert couldnt make it sad enough, his instrumentals were just better

  • gary jules made the song really depressing..

    i like this version better

  • I think I love both versions, for different reasons. ultimately, both of them get the idea of the song across. I'd like to see versions of this song in -every- genre.

  • wow, I think I've found the original emo band

  • @CaptainComposte there were other emo bands before TFF, more emo actually, TFF is mildly emo compared to them.

  • I think we should always respect the originals, hullo, Gary's version wouldn't EXIST without this one. But I will admit I like his better, this one feels rushed. And don't get me wrong I ADORE 80's music. Just doesn't work for this song. It doesn't give me the same feeling the slow version does.

The video though, well that's just.... no comment xD

  • i accidentally removed my previous comment. in an earlier response to dumb, err, masterskull, i informed him that the reason why jules' version has more views is bcoz youtube was not yet a very "in-thing" in the 80s worldwide. had it been so, this would surely have more views. the 80s kids are now professionals that they don't have enuf time to visit youtube unlike today's kids who are constantly glued to the net. it's only now that they're discovering who "created" this wonderful song

  • Imo one of the Best songs of the whole 80's.

    What a classic!

  • I love this song, both this version and the Jules one. But about the video... What is up with the dancing guy? Looks like a coked Green Man.

  • this one has less views then the Garys becuase this one sucks

  • Comment removed

  • @MsPink68 << gay name gary has more views becuase hes better at making music then dead people

  • @masterSkullXXXXXXXXX non-sense! hahaha! what a dumb skull

  • @MsPink68 your just jelly <<

  • I'm your age, 88. This is one of the few 80's songs and groups that avoided being cheesy ('cept maybe "Sowing the Seeds . . . "

  • just as Jules popularized this song, a real punk version would be even better. TFF sucked balls, literally and figuratively I was there I know. They paved the way for the shite emo garbage. Cash did a more popular version of Hurt by Reznor and a thrashed version of that would be better also. I like to listen to both songs doubled in speed...

  • @NOmeansnoFAN hmm....I sometimes think Depeche Mode paved the way more for emo shite. " I want somebody to share, share the rest of my life, share my innermost thoughts, know my intimate details...." sounds similar to slow version of this song.

  • @aCollectorsPiece true they were painfully awful also.

  • Ok, I know n LOVE Tears For Fears n im only 18. Safe 2 say this was b4 my time yet I love it. Who the fuck is Gary Jules??? lol

  • this song was created for another generation which was the 80s, not for the sad, depressed people of today who prefer the emo thing. to 88GTi, yeah dude, i noticed that too, i mean the tambourine at the end of this song continues into the next song Pale Shelter. i thought then it was a continuation. :-)

  • @MsPink68 Well said!!! You understand what I mean!

For years I thought this song and Pale Shelter were the same song...haha!!!! :)

  • I have decided that I like the Tears for Fears version better. Come on, Gary Jules can't dance like that.

  • You have to love the silhouette dancing! I feel like I was born a little bit too late when I hear music from the 80's. Tears for Fears!

  • This song of all, has within something unexplainable!

  • the gary jules version is better but this is pretty good too. for somereason it doesnt seem like it would be the original. and it seems very old styled

  • @robotsant77 Man, you're so tasteless...

  • i hate it when bands take a song and make it so sad..if your gonna make it sad and personal make your own fucking song... pisses. If this songs tempo was a little slower i woulda loved it

  • @TheNineinchsnails what you mean?

  • @ShagZthaClown this song isnt super sad..so y did that guy have to cover it and make it sad..if ur gonna change a song so much just create ur own lyrics and make a new song

  • @TheNineinchsnails ohhh yes i completely agree with you, worse thing is that most of the youth think that jules's version is way better

  • @ShagZthaClown i would love his version if it wasnt a cover...

  • Look the 'Ars Empatheia' Version!!! it's the only good electro variation...I swear you Like it!!

  • this is a horrible copy of the original!

  • @numb4z this IS the original

  • @Horsemanhorseman no its not the original is by gary jules

  • @numb4z the culture is like marmalade... less you have, more you spread.

  • @numb4z Dumbass it IS the original

  • @numb4z lol dude wtf are you talking about. Gary Jules remade this song with Michael Andrews in like 2003.

  • I dont remember this song growing up... but I was born in 86. I remember the song being in ' Donnie Darko ' (sp?) but it had been updated by another band. Excellent song :)

  • Mad World, true dat! The Cold War was at its absolute PEAK in the 80's and the more socially conscious artists were commenting on it within their pop music genre. The renewed sense of impending annihilation was at the back of EVERY conscious persons mind and this song speaks to that. Living in the UK with the US warheads on YOUR land made you a PRIMARY target and one that would get stuck, just by way of proximity, before the United States. Thankfully we've set the clock back a few strokes.

  • @Yapostadodat you act like you were the only one under the crosshairs. FYI, hundreds of US cities were targeted by russian nukes too. I live in a rural area, but because of our specified industry, we would have been vaporized too.

  • @Yapostadodat ...Yeah But Yapo...Kids Now Hear A Song And Go....OHHHHHHHHH I Dont Like That...I Prefer The New Version lol...Like Yer Comments...^5 For 80s Thought There

  • OK so the first version of this song I heard was the Gary Jules version in the movie Donnie Darko. I liked it a lot...then I heard this I like this one a lot too. Why is it all about which is better why can't be all about the love of the song

  • @sharkwave13 quote :D

  • @sharkwave13 because bands like evergreen terrace prove that even the best of songs can be ruined if you just scream loud enough so then everyone has to argue about which version is best

  • I believe that the version you heard first of any song tends to be the one you like the best. What's your view?

  • This version isn't bad but Gary's is way better.

  • Ha! Love the "New Wave" dancing in the background. THOSE were the days. Oh how I miss the 80's and 90's. Lots of these people weren't even born back then. Wow. Haven't seen dancing like that in years... Funny!!! I be my brother can still get down like that. I gotta show him this!

  • what the hell is this? the guy is practically raping his window

  • This version is to fast paced for me

  • It's so 80's, but the backing fits the song just as well as the piano did. I think so, anyway. It's so eerie! Especially the brass!

  • the fact that this record is being compared to modern versions 25 years later just says it was one of the best records of the early 80's

  • a better singer and a bit slower and this song would we be the be great, o wait gary jules version is like tht,

  • I like this version better than the Gary Jules version.

  • Gears of War...just not by Gary Jules

  • people stop comparing gary jules version and this one there both good im just glad some dick like justin bieber just doesnt comes and copies it

  • @darkyug666 Too late ,..Adam Glambert already did

  • Super awesome music, amazing Video!!!! Fuck the Gary jules\adam lambert version

This way far better gary/adam couldn't even make good music themselves so they just copy just as many of the modern crap singers\band- I really the miss the 80's

  • fuck! this is good!!

  • Sounds surprisingly like early Depeche Mode.

  • love the random dancer in the background hahaa

  • Comment removed

  • These guys created the original so credit them. Gary ripped of their version and changed it sound more modern. Good version but not original.

  • gary jules version is very much better.. I don´t care that this is the original

  • @Zhersh1 sciocco scopata spic, stai parlando merda

  • @goonchistaw what??? I don´t talking in monkey lenguage...sorry...bye donkey ;-)

  • @Zhersh1 it is language, not lenguage

    ritardo.

    ciao.

  • @goonchistaw jajajaja....ok...I will say this in spanish...la puta de la madre que te parió a tí y a toda italia macarroni de mierda..vete a tomar por culo con el maricon de tu padre,...cuando te pille te voy a meter una que no vas a saber ni por donde te vienen...ok?..translate this...JAJAJAJAJAJAAJA

  • @Zhersh1 si qualunque, non capisco espana JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA

stai parlando merda , traduca vaffunculo la fica JAJAJAJAJA

    voi idioa scopante,, certo

  • TFF WHERE PRETTY GOOD THIS BEING ONE OF THE BEST,BUT HAVE NOTHING ON KIDS IN THE KITCHEN, CHANGE IN MOOD.

  • In 1982, there was a sort of modern post punk soft goth thing, but TFF had captured the contemporary expressionism that later was copied by Madonna, and to a large extent many other modern artists in including JT and Lady G.

  • better version by far...

  • TEARS FOR FEARS ARE THE BEST!!

  • or use piece/peace correctly.

  • this would be a lot better if it wasn't for that weird jungle beat.

  • When this version came out, it was part of the 'techno' sound that was prevalent at the time. Jules was more in line with the "Emo" schtick that was in the air, everybody was Damien Ricein out...aannnnnnnnnggggggssssstttttttt was the tone

  • Somehow talking about dreams where your dying with poppy little synth beats behind you just don't sound right. I know it's the original but I much prefer the Gary Jules version. Much more impactful.

  • both versions were brilliant

  • nyeh. i love the song but the music isnt to my taste.

  • tear for fears hanno fatto belle canzoni

  • Well it wouldn't be an 80's pop song if it weren't over-produced with many layers of music.

  • this song sucks fuck, gary jules made this song badass.

    haha 1:50 fuck that guy

  • I like the part where it slows down when he says mad world.

  • Haha, God I'm not diggin' this version. But then again it does sound pretty awesome.

  • wow.. is this the original? the first version I've heard of this song was the version of Adam Lambert, then the one of Gary Jules.. I like those versions more then the original.. this music is almost funny.. :P but this song is also good, not so depressing as the other ones ;) (my opinion)

  • The music is not fitting of the lyrics.

  • @cilraycil quite the contrary lol

  • @kalel333 Not in my opinion. lol

  • I grew up with this song...I bought the album 'The Hurting' on vinyl back in 1983 when I was 15 years old, long before CD's MP3's or iPods even existed...Did any of you realise on the Album the tambourine at the end continues straight into the next song 'Pale Shelter'? Didn't think so...Don't expect many of you were even born then?

This fantastic song was written in a different time for a different generation of ears...Please stop comparing it to Gary Jules modern depressing version....

  • @88GTi i like the song attached to the abandonded santas village clip on utube... very eerie and fitting.... check it out...

  • @TheGmgirl77 Thanks...Just had a look...The title is very fitting 'Abandoned' Just like they shut the gates and walked away...Bit spooky really!!!

    Such a shame...But we do live in a Mad World...haha!!! :)

  • @88GTi I did! Like you, I grew up listening to them. Nothing compares to the original......ever! Long live TFF!

  • @88GTi The original works off the juxtaposition of tempo and message. Gary Jules simply didn't understand the song when he covered it. I can't imagine any reason to do it the way he did other than he simply didn't understand what was going on.

  • @Secturis What a Fantastic Articulate Intelligent Comment!!!!

You've hit the nail right on the head...And also made me smile :)

What an excellent person you are!!!

  • @Secturis He did it that way because thats the way he interpreted it. When you do a cover of a song it doesn't need to be in the same style as the original. It doesn't even need to convey the same emotions, musically speaking. He made the song his own in a way. He probably did understand the juxtaposition of tempo and message but felt a better connection with the message and wrote a sad song. Whatever, both are great in my opinion.

  • @88GTi Who is Gary Jules? I'm 29 and this is the version I know, of course I've never been one to like new music......lol much to my friends despair.

  • @twistedwish20 The video of the Gary Jules version is on Youtube...As I type I can see a thumbnail of his video is just to the right...haha!!!

Today SO much new music is only old music remixed and messed about with!!

You can find a Dubstep version of almost anything now..haha!!!

I'm 42 & my Son is 19....I'm not aloud to play original versions of 'New' songs around him because he gets upset "Oh Dad...You've ruined it now"...I still do it though...Makes me laugh so much...haha!!! :)

  • @88GTi It sounds so much more modern than the wax cylinder 78rpm version from 1916 that I grew up with as a child.

  • @88GTi I was there dude! As you know running one song into another was a favorite technique for these guys. They did the same thing with Songs From The Big Chair (Funny How Time Flies). Really good days, Jody Watley, Chris Isaak, Don Imus as a VJ on VH1, 10,000 Maniacs, Edie Brickell, on and on. When the world was young and the days were warm and sunny, and...well you know.

  • @88GTi i noticed that too, it occurs on their "tears roll down" LP too (Their G/H)

  • This version got 80's style, Jules version got 2000's style. That's all.

  • I like gary better, but gotta give him credit for creating it in the first place :o

  • gotta luv the arm dancing......imagine the fun u could have on a crowded dance floor:))

  • Even if we give this song that they themselves wrote to Gary Jules, one band is still being listened to 30 years later. Tears for Fears FTW!!

  • Gary Jules no doubt. Song has a better effect in a slow, low-key tone.

  • this doesn't really fit the lyric's very well

  • @g4bandit i agree, that's just what i was thinking, then i read your comment lol

  • i like both versions

  • 2:20. I find that to be awesome- need to learn to dance like that dude D:

  • It's amazing to me how starkly different this song is from Gary Jules' version, despite having the same lyrics and basic rhythm.

  • Think im going to say Gary Jules' better :)

  • Ganz geile version, aber die von Gary Jules ist irgentwie besser, mehr EMOtionen^^

  • 1:57... best dance ever

  • Gary Jules Vs Tears For Fears.

    Original is best.

  • Its actually impossible to decide which is better, they're both DIFFERENT, neither is superior.

  • lol, i love the way he dances

  • I hate cover versions but I have to say Gary Jules did a good copy of this....like this best though!!!

  • How the hell could anyone think the original sucks? All that gary jules douche did was sing this song fucking slow! How the fuck is that talent? Im going to take a really good song and sing it slower, what a genius!

  • i laugh that others think this version sucks. thee would be no Gary jules who ever that is if it wasn't for ground breaking music like this

  • This so shit !!!! Gary Jule's is way better

  • @RAY3336661 And your musical taste is shit you fucking moron. Gtfo.

  • @Sja620 Is that what you really think? then you are a fucking dumbass SHIT!!!!! because the only reason I know this song is that I heard it in a movie ,i don't listen to this shit music I don't even care ,I'm not homosexual just like you so stop barkling shit around if you don't know FUCK YOU !!!

  • @RAY3336661 Someone's mad and or has a tiny penis.

  • @sparrerbyrd FUCK OFF HOMOSEXUAL

  • @RAY3336661 Wow nice paragraph, too bad all you said was complete nonsense. Rage more faggot, then gtfo the internet because you fail so hard it hurts. Also learn English faggot because half of your response was poorly structured and nonsensical. FYI no one gives a fuck how you know this song you twat, nor do they care whether or not you're homosexual.

  • @Sja620 I don't need to make a perfect paragraph to make you understand what I said , cuz it's `actually clear ,even though is not well structured or its because you are pathetic and retarted that can't even understand a word .I don't need to write perfectly to make you understand that you are barkling like fucking dog ,I don't give a fuck who are the homosexual singers just like you ,this music is shit and I understand you like fucking gay motherfucker.

  • @RAY3336661 "Barkling"? What the fuck does that even mean? Jesus Christ you're a bigger moron than I originally gave you credit for kid. Where are your parents? 13 yr olds like you shouldn't be allowed on the internet.

  • gary jules version is way better than this original but this ones ok but gary jules is alout better

  • muito bom ....great ...very great ....from Brazil!!!!

  • Anytime anyone wants to sell the rights to this song, I'll bid...

  • this hurt's

  • Adam Lambert's version...by far the best!!!

  • @frederick909 It is good but I think that Adam Lambert is trying to hard to sound like the Gary Jules version of slow and depressing with more screaming. It is good for American Idol but not good enough if you want to call it the best by far. In comparison to the original and to the Gary Jules version it is not that good.

  • tears for fears version is best, and i was born in 1996! :D

  • Gary Jules Is Best..:)

  • that fuckign sucks ass
