This is bullshit. It says your location isn't shared automatically. It is shared automatically with Google. If it wasn't shared automatically, the GPS updates would be sent to my home server - and not Google's.
We are researchers studying peoples attitudes towards Google Latitude. If you have heard of Google Latitude (whether you have used it or not) and are at least 18 years old, we would like to talk with you. Please email us back at: ucistudy[at]ics[dot]uci[dot]edu
We are conducting this research under the Institute for Software Research at the University of California, Irvine.
in phones that have a GPS unit (such as the G1 or almost any modern mid to high end Nokia) then Google Latitude will use GPS to get a lock on your current position, otherwise it will resort to using Cell Tower triangulation
They call it 'Google LATITUDE' now, and suggest you can choose your friends, but y'all just KNOW that parents and bosses will effectively RENAME it 'LASSITUDE', as in insulting kids with BIG WORDS and inferring 'LAZY' and "SHIFTLESS".
They'll hunt you down via GPS and if you're within a country mile of 'downloadable' chore , you'll 'look good for it'.
You'll see!
If parents offer smartphone, quote and give reference (URL) to "government privacy concerns" and THIS fine Google video!
What's funy is they could take this info already, and probably do. They always had the ability to access it. It's whether you want to add to who it's shared with.
As for Homeland security, they have your cell phone location through the cell providers already.
I love Google...but, come on guys it doesn't take a genius to tell how this technology can be used to abuse peoples privacy. For example someone could easily plant a mobile phone in your car or suitcase and then be able to track you remotely. How can Google protect your privacy in such case?
@jnjenga ah you're right! I haven't tought of that... but now, let's think again: have you ever searched for GPS devices (not mobile phones) which are specifically made to spy on someone location? I suppose they don't cost as much as a smartphone with a flat UMTS connection... right?
Homeland Security will insist that firmware with a backdoor is in each device to allow remote enabling of the tracking feature.
"...if you hide, we don't store your location..." or, it may be stored in a file named "hidden locations", to be erased or recalled during an "accidental glitch" in the software, irretrievably releasing all the data of millions of users' movements to ne'er do wells. This reminds me of the Do Not Call List which scammers are now using to target the vulnerable on list.
I think this is a great idea! Could even save lives, if someone is abducted or in a car accident, where someone went off the road into dense woods. I've been looking at GPS systems for Grandchildren, but too expensive. Google is the BEST!
and how m i suppose to be dating 2 women at once with this on the market?, they will all want to see my location and if i hide that wold make it even worse.
and you can say good bye to lies to your parents about where you are going since they can track you from the PC to.
@xcorpox micor chip implant will be next, how nicely the gov will talk you and your family members into taking the chip by saying its a safe way to locate a family mem and that you can know where your child is at all time. think about it! its coming soon so be aware.. You can see where I'm going with this.

It does use GPS you retard. You have the option to choose which one you want with the G-1. So quit acting like a fan boy who knows it all.

it's funny how all these Moms/parents want it to track their kids. I think a good parent doesn't need gps on a kid.
People will accept these things for selfish reasons instead of THE BIG PICTURE!

I can see it coming.... without your knowledge someone can use programs to find you and track you no matter what privacy software you use.
Any modern phone the 911 operator can activate GPS tracking on any phone and vola! you are being tracked. Turn the phone off... and it still works...
