@barefootlarry: There is such a thing as Irish! A lot of people in Britain and America have somehow got the idea that the language of Ireland is called Gaelic, but in Ireland, it is called "Irish", and if you call it "Gaelic", everyone knows straight away that you are a visitor.
Hi, Nancy. From Australia. I love this tune and play it on fiddle. These chords are from the book Traditional Tunes for Two Fiddlers. It's in 3/4 time Key DMaj / eq bar lines one chord per bar start on beat 3. part A pick upII: /D/Bm/G-A/D/G/A7/D/Bm/G/D/Bm/Bm/G/A7/D/D:II II:pick up on 3/D/A7/G/D/A7/D/G/A/F#m/Bm/G/A7/G/A7/D/D:II Hope this is of use. Good Luck.
You might want to think about your description. There is no such thing as "Irish"... they speak Gaelic in Ireland, and Si Bheag Si Mhor means translates as "Little Hill Big Hill".
I don't know about the key clacks, never heard that before. You might want to find another autoharp player locally and make sure their instrument sounds the same way when you play it. You might have something wrong with yours, if not.
Hey nancy, i loved your rendition of Si Bheag Si Mhor, and was wondering what book you got the chords from, i cant seem to find chords on the internet and so was wondering if you could either recommend a book, or (being a bit cheeky here) even message me the chords, and i could work out the melody for them lol, anyway.. lovely video nancy.. and keep on playing :O)
Nancy, I just ordered my first autoharp, for my wife actually. Been watching lots of hack players who just rake a single finger or thumb across all 36 strings with every strum. It's painful to watch and sounds awful. You're one of the few amateur players who really treat the autoharp as a real instrument. You have a nice subtle tough and very pretty technique. Hope to see more of you on Youtube!
thanks! I'm a music teacher and a musician. I learned a lot about the autoharp by watching Jo Ann Smith, Brian Bowers, and others. I'm also a guitar player so that helps. Thanks again and I'll put more videos up in a little while! :)
Nancy, if I'm correct, the clacking is when your chord bars come up, and that's a simple fix - go to any hardware store, get small round felt pads that are self - sticking, for knick - knacks. Find some small enough to fit at the end of each chord bar, where they come up to the frame at the end. If not, cut some to fit, which I have also done. when the chord bar comes up it will have the felt hit instead of the chord bar. Good luck!
Really good. Lovely to listen to. I think maybe if you mic the autoharp up so you pick up mainly the strings rather than all the atmosphere too, the clicking from the keys won't be so loud. Do people say they still hear the clicking when you're playing live? I think it's more to do with the method of recording than anything. Keep at it!
Thanks! I agree, a mic would help, but I don't think my little video camera has a 'line in'. I'll look into some better recording methods. When I play live, I use picks, no complaints so far... :)
That version came from the Mel Bay book, "You Can Teach Yourself Autoharp". I built up callouses by practicing quietly late at night so as to not wake up the neighbors.... My little video camera couldn't take the racket from the picks.

I got this arrangement from a fiddle book called "Fiddler's Philharmonic". To make a long explanation short, I used C, G7, and F.

oh, and kilby snow, but what you'll find, he plays left handed and upside down. you can't really reproduce his sound unless you play backwards!

Your playing is very sweet. I do the same thing...play at night with my bare fingers so no one can hear me! It's a great way to practice. Janet

I dont think the keys should be making that clacking noise. My autoharp is perfectly silent when you push the keys down.
