I'm a big JD fan and have one album of the Chad Mitchell Trio; great album, especially when they did Long Tall Texan. This song on this video was done by JD on one of his early solo albums.
Please tell me : Wrote John this song? And how old was he there? And what´s the name of this song? Thanks for posting thats one of my favorite John Denver videos on Youtube!
Great clip of JD!!! Was this mid 60's I take it?? I was probably 8 to 10 years old then. I was a huge John Denver fan in the early 70's from the beginning. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert in Omaha, NE his very 1st concert there early spring of "75". I was 16 and my very 1st concert ever. It was so exciting!!! Thanks for posting. Miss him:(
@sedona05 John joined the Chad Mitchell Trio ( later the Mitchell Trio ) later Denver Boise & Johnson in 1965, and left to pursue his solo career in 1969. Here he is performing with Boise and Johnson.
Even though this is sooo early in John's career, you can see the exact same expressions that are so familiar. He looks exactly like he looked in the '80's once he shed the glasses. Aaaahhh to look so young....for 30 years!
I'm a white gal and a singer but I still feel that I really don't have a right to sing this great song because I've been fortunate enough to never know restriction because of my skin color. Strong song for an indelible people. Strong spirits make for strong music.
@TheWoodsugar I think it's ok for white people to sing it if it's more on a metaphysical plane. Many of us are still not 'mentally' free for many reasons.
A great clip, but this isn't the Mitchell Trio. It's Denver, Boise & Johnson, consisting of John Denver, David Boise and Mike Johnson. That's the group John created to pay off the Mitchell Trio's debts after the trio broke up.
Actually by contract they had to stop using Chad's name once the last original member left. There was nothing more sinister than that. However this is a little known period of history for the trio, as evident by the fact that onl the orginal three and Denver took part in the Reunion concerts.

@DanMcGuinness I can't hardly bear the fact that he's not with us now. It's almost intolerable. He was a poet, a genius in his field. He was our generations pride and joy.
His tremendous talent was already prevelant here at a young age. A true natural voice, so, so good!
What a loss to the world when he was died. You can take voice lessons to learn breathe control, etc but you are born with voice like John Denver had. It is innate.
Like Linda Ronstadt, you are born with a gorgeous voice. I go to so many music events, open mikes, etc to hear different singers but it is one in a million to have a voice like John Denver.
WOW. Tremendous show by John D. Even at this early stage his voice, like stated below me :), was so developed and so powerfull. What a thrill to see this clip.
We used to have John Denver, now all we have is P. Diddy :). He is greatly missed.
His voice was so strong and well developed even at this young age. To think he was nearly broke at this point. You can see this young man is going places!
Why does it say "Mitchell" in the title of this? It is clearly after the last remaining member of the Mitchell Trio (Mike Kobluk) left and they were calling themselves "Denver, Boise and Johnson".
John Denver was in The Mitchell Trio after Chad left (and they no longer used Chad's first name), but neither Boise, nor Johnson were ever part of the (Chad) Mitchell Trio.
Thanks for the update. The last information I heard years ago was that before John made it on his own became a member of the The Chad Mitchell Trio. So, I stand corrected. They were good, however, no matter what the name of the group.
It was probably vanity- I bet he wanted to look "cooler" and kept them off!!! OR- could be that cute coed Ann Martell he was trying to impress at the time was around so he did not want to have on the dorky dark rimmed glasses!! I LOVE his strumming and swaying on this song btw.
Well, the two that you did post are exceptional. In this one, JD is so young. He's from my generation and boys looked like that back then. Thanks again.

This song was written by Billy Taylor. It's been recorded by a number of artists, maybe most notably Nina Simone.

Is there any way to get these clips on a cd/dvd? My mother adored John and this would make for some very good days (early onset alzheimers)

I remember when 'Dutch' got his 12-string Goya. He was so proud of it.
Won't be long now, buddy. See you soon.

Not the Mitchell trio. Not even a trio. I count 4 performers.
But always nice to hear John sing.

Shows how malleable Billy Taylor's song is.
I wish his earlier appearance with the Back Porch Majority on Hullaballoo("Get Together") was still posted.

The harmonies of all three are wonderful, but he really is the star here, even then.
I love the way he found such joy in singing. He literally sings with his whole body.
Awesome.
I think this was deleted by YT Copyright Grumblebums so thanx for posting it again.
