  • The first HAL sounded like a Speak'N'Spell... the second..I dunno...

  • This will be the last chance I get to do this, but...

2010? that film is so last year!

I know, stupid comment, and probably ruined the video viewing pleasure, but I wanted to make that joke for so long.

  • The collapse of the Soviet Union is perhaps the worst thing to ever happen to space exploration.

  • Comment removed

  • The deactivation technique Bowman used in 2001 the movie was different than in the book -- there, he physically removed logic and memory modules one-by-one, and had them floating all over the zero-G computer bay by the time HAL got simple. Better for the cinematography was this technique, which makes for a less cluttered re-activation.

  • Isn't he supposed to restart the computer after installing updates?

  • @LordBrEAKingspelL HAL's a holographic computer. He can operate even while his optical memory/processor is removed mid-execution.He has redundant parts, much like the human brain. He kept operating the ship while his higher processing functions were disabled, exactly how you remember to keep breathing while asleep or in a coma.Doctor Chandra, his father, decided to re-enable those functions instead of programming HAL again. That's why he was happy to see HAL alive, well and being himself again.

  • @LordBrEAKingspelL Classic!

  • this is the future model of iphone 4 siri...

  • computer brain surgeon and psychiatrist, ahh great!!

  • a good edit for this swap hals voice for portal2 the space core voice

  • Screen says ATM! HAL £20 please plus my balance.

  • What type of keyboard is that? Is it PS/2? USB? Why still CRT monitors? :P

  • Why didn't he just push all of them in to begin with, instead of wasting all that time pushing 2 in nope, push a couple more in, nope, just push them all in... this movie was good overall but these moments were soooo stupid.

  • @qoaa Maybe he is being cautious. It's like installing computer hardwares to diagnose problems. :P

  • @qoaa I agree with antdude, he was testing each component to determine where things went wrong.

  • @Aurochhunter that makes sense, it was an odd scene I was thinking if it's fixed when all are pushed in then just push them in instead of 1 by 1

  • in the book chandra is Indian

  • Imagine HAL saying BBRAINNNNNZZZZZZZ, HMMMMM! with the creepy voice at 1:59

  • why didn't he just push it all in?

  • the keyboard was most definitely NOT there in 2001. i certainly don't remember it ^_^

  • is it just me, or were the screen and keyboard not there in 2001?

  • @sSketcha No, neither the screen nor the keyboard were present in "2001." The problem was that the original set had been destroyed, so it had to be completely rebuilt based on photographs of the original, although there were nevertheless some differences in addition to the aforementioned screen and keyboard.

  • @Scifimaster92 Actually, two of the props were saved, one of HAL's eyepieces, and I belive Bowman's space suit.

  • @Scifimaster92 What type of keyboard is that? Is it PS/2? USB? Still CRT monitors in 2010? :P

  • @antdude I honestly don't know. All I know is that the keyboard appears to be using a standard QWERTY set of characters.

Regarding the CRT monitors, they are still occasionally used on older equipment. (Ironically, in "2001" they are portrayed as LCDs.) We must remember, though, that this film was made in 1984, when such monitors were still in widespread use.

  • Why would he just not push all the circuits in in the first place. >.<

  • @npadul30

    incremental diagnostic testing

  • Bye 2010 A.D. Snif Snif :(.

  • Hello Doctor, name, continue, yesterday, tomorrow.

  • i think it's really cool how ironic the fact that in this movie, hal is sort of the good guy, and at the end, i kinda felt sorry for him. (yeah, i know. felt sorry for a machine. i'm crazy lol) where as in the first one, he was pretty menacing and genuinely creepy.

  • This movie is way underrated.

  • This scene was always my favorite.

  • RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

    HE'S BECOME CONTROLLED BY MICROSOFT!

  • My computer just keeps telling me he is the Finance Minister of Nigeria, huh?

  • After being offline so long, HAL had basically forgotten english - Dr. Chandra needed to reeducate him. the resurrected HAL's voice starts out unnatural and robotic, but as it relearns to speak it regains the same fluidity and fluence it posessed during the Discovery mission.

  • @poopskinTheLiar I don't know about the voice thing but if you watch the prolog; it says that bowman had disconnected HAL'S logic circuits. To me that sounds like he took Hal's ability to control the Discovery; or maybe he just slowed him down to a stop somehow. In this movie Dr. Chandra told SAL the other comp that he was going to "disconnect some of her higher brain fuctions" if i remember correctly. That's why she asked him "Will I dream?" That's essetially what we do when we go to sleep.

  • I think Hal created the Cylons.

  • I think it's time for NASA to start creating the HAL 9000

  • @SovietNinjah If I know it right they already begun to build an AI that can recognize facial expressions and english grammar and human emotions, and act as a psycologist if there's a conflict between astronauts.

  • Oh too cool, the memory room is exactly the same as it was 9 years ago in the film, 16 years ago in real life!

  • @hotelmario510 The problem is, it does... and it doesn't.

The room and modules are (IIRC) as they appeared in the original, and reflect 2001's successful attempt to create genuinely original-looking tech (rather than just late-60s tech-style with extra blinking lights as an inferior movie might have done).

But the keyboard- which wasn't in 2001- is blatantly early-80s in appearance. Its "off the shelf" look contrasts badly with the original set and lets things down.

  • @NotATube I suppose so.

  • 02:50

    Nooooo! EVERYBODY'S GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!

  • love that robot voice!

  • its now 2010 and we still don't have public space craft.

  • @Matarina It's now 2010 and I still don't have a computer I can talk to.

  • @jacketman22 I remember a certain computer program called Dr Sbaitso where you could have a conversation with your computer, though it knew f*ck all, and just kept saying things like 'why do you ask this question?' and 'is this a problem for you?

  • @Matarina No, but our computers do have better voice synthesizers. ;-)

  • @Matarina We have a military-ish space craft. WHAT NOW?!

  • @Matarina

Maybe we do, but u and i just dont know about it ;)

  • @Matarina we are geting there

  • @Matarina Yes, America has always spent their money in stupid ways. We should have spent much more money on space exploration.

  • @Matarina Blame the cuts on NASA's funding

  • @Matarina

Very True! We have the technology and have had it for a long time but never to the time to embrace it. We are just now building a maned spacecraft for Mars. It all comes down to funding... just imagine the things we could do or be capable of if money wasn't an issue.

  • @Matarina Yeah, but at least we have touch screens and HD displays.

  • @Matarina wow. what did you do to help anything? stop waiting for others to do things. thank god all inventors don't wait like you do nor do they whine like you do either.

  • @Matarina That's because technological progress via government fiat is slower than frozen molasses.
