The only problem I have is my piercings. I have my angels, snakes, spiders, septum, naval, and hips done, and whenever someone talks to me I get 2 things.
In both Japan and Korea, when asked about Americans, the majority thinks of Caucasians, unless you are dealing with those who have lived and worked in the US for a while. This stereotyping works the other way, too: For example, someone walks up to me and start talking about China-related things. But I am a Korean by birth. Should I stop and explain? Waste of time. If you are being stereotyped, then the one who is acting in this way is generally not interested in your own opinions.
@Waterflux It's not just Korea and Japan, it happens all across Asia. I was in Thailand and the locals wouldn't believe me when I said I was a US citizen, because I wasn't white. At one point I just started telling them I was from Singapore. It was more believeable since I spoke good english (minus the Singaporean accent). On the bright side, the local scammers didn't haggle me as much.
I'm not complaining about what your saying in your video, Im just saying in general I think that Americans SHOULD NOT go to Japan and complain about Japanese being racist or whatnot. LOOK AT OUR FREAKING COUNTRY!! we are like the most racist out of the whole freaking world! And stereotyping people?! we stereotype left and right its insane!!! I don't think its fair to complain about the Japanese because that's being hypocritical. We are FAR FAR WORSE
@Szekler11 that's what i was thinking as well.... and it happens every time when black person makes a video about their experience in other country- it's constantly about race!
i think your problem is in the morning mirror. U need to change yr attitude! I lived in japan for many years college and work and did not have these problem. If yr not happy move back to usa
what about artist do you have to have a big reputation to be considered for a job in entertainment, i want to go to Japan one day but that is going to be a while
@Musiclover6404 I knew one guy who came to japan on an entertainment visa. You have to be very skilled and its hard to get regular gigs that will pay you. Its just like getting art gigs in the USA I think. You just have to know the right people and have the right skills.
We can't change their country's ills, they themselves can. I guess our daily encounters with people are part and parcel of the internationalisation process inevitable for a country with as big an international footprint but as little an international influence as Japan has had.
@777kikyo666 There isn't as much stuff available to overweight people. Most of the stores only sell free size M. I think I went to a plus size store in Ikebukuro, but I never knew any fat people in Japan. The diet and all the walking keeps people in fit condition + japanese girls are always dieting. IDK if that sheds any light on the issue...I don't think they will treat you bad, but its not an accommodating place for it.
@bluecreambunnymomiji Are you a neanderthal? I thought they went extinct...huh, i guess its true that you learn something new everyday...well not in your case.
@TheSokodelic ohhhhh did you think that up all by yourself or was it just something you heard someone else say and you never truly did you research on what a neanderthal really is because in so many words you just called me that same thing i called you, a monkey, actually a neanderthal is a step above monkeys, they are considered the missing like between apes and humans. did you know? maybe not because if you did you might have tried to come up with something more clever and original
@TheSokodelic oh and study showed Neanderthal and modern human brains were the same size at birth, but by adulthood, the Neandertal brain was larger than the modern human brain so what point were you trying to make again?
I'm not sure if it is racism but Japanese people usually find light hair and light colored eyes beautiful and darker skin is not considered as beautiful. Some people say it's because they are not used to that but they are also not used to really dark skin or really curly hair but they don't find that attractive to look at. So yeah.
@zombiechickenify2 I was a college student, but for part time jobs I worked at a maid cafe for about a month then started teaching english when I finally got my work permission on my visa. Its really competitive out here. Try to take some TESL classes if you can. I did some bartending for gigs that my friends knew about every now and then too.
I'm Japanese. It's not racism 'cause we don't hate any certain race. Some of us just have a mild distaste for foreigners. But that's just 'cause we don't have enough ppl like you (a foreigner) in Japan. More foreigners we get the quicker we'll get used to them.
I love how black people bring their racial baggage with them everywhere. When you see Japanese people in Japan hanging around each other, it isn't called grouping, its called living. If you don't speak the language fluently and don't know the culture very well you can't expect to be treated as one of their own. Speaking to someone who "gets by" on any language is like talking to a 5 year old child, it gets old quick.
@vcdna1 I don't mean to come across as being insensitive, but you have to understand in most Asian countries they simply don't care about the black/white race issue. Rule of thumb when living abroad, learn the language well, and know the culture inside out, and I promise you, you've won 80% of the battle. You are a guest in their country not the other way around, so please don't expect them to change their lives style to please you.
@vcdna1 I'm conversationally fluent in japanese and I know the culture pretty well. Many of my friends before the trip were Japanese. I was just talking about how people didn't think that I was american. When I was working at a maid cafe my boss would ALWAYS ask me if my parents were americans and so on. Its really weird. They love Will Smith/Obama but don't know that black people come from the US. I think its because of all of the Nigerians or something
@lunamielstar Yes that is true, many Blacks in Japan or in Asia generally are African. I am sorry if I came across as rude, but I get told how Asians in Asia are racist when in fact I know for the most part it isn't true. Many of my friends come back with stories about how they felt left out, when they don't even bother to learn the language or the culture. Hope you know where I'm coming from.
@vcdna1 Yeah I know what you mean, I met tons of foreigners who always made excuses about not wanting to or needing to learn japanese. Its just annoying that those kinds of people far outnumber people who actually take the time and effort to try to assimilate and even then, you'll never actually be in. It was kinda disheartening that I would always be the token gaijin no matter how 'japanese on the inside' I would act.
I don't think japanese are racist, ignorant about foreign culture maybe lol
what do you expect? you come from a melting pot country which japan isnt and doesnt want. You may think this is wrong coming from a multicultural country, but for them it keeps the crime rate down. And you may think that this is racist, but looking at statistics, this is fact. And if you dont like it you are always welcome back in lovely america, where all races happily get along :8)
Thats really true.....i think Japanese people are too strict of how they or other people looks, how their hairstyle, how skinny, how feminine and how old they are...tend to do things together same fashion style however they wear fashionable clothes but will be depends on the prefecture..Sometimes being too conservative in the conversation or actions..it is really a culture.. :). But if you show interests they will come at you and will ask you about your lifestyle and hobbies.

So in Japan...is it racism? Prejudice? Ignorance? I'd LIKE to think that's it's prejudice mixed with ignorance. Well, until the uryoku dantai roll by. Anyway, I see you and I are into similar music genres. *brofist* B:
@BobCassidy Ah I suppose you aren't too versed in Japanese culture. A major part of the culture of Japan is for everyone to be a part of the group, which I talked about in this video. You should read up on it. Its pretty interesting. I'm not saying the ingroup outgroup thing is bad. I'm just talking about my experiences with it. As a foreigner I'm allowed to get away with anything with the excuse 'gaijin dakara' or 'its because I'm a foreigner'
@BobCassidy LOOK WHAT HAPPEN WHEN THE SUNAMI HIT JAPAN WHO HELP JAPAN IN THE CRISIS WE AMERICAN AND OTHERE NATIONS SO NEXT TIME JAPAN IS THINKING OF DISCRIMINATION ON A FOREIGNER WE WILL NOT HELP YOU WHEN YOU ARE IN TROBLE OR A EARTH QUAKE HIT JAPAN DONT CALL US TO HELP YOU IN TILL YOU JAPANESE TREAD FOREIGNERS RIGHT AND DONT DISCRIMINATE BECAUSE SOME ONE IS DIFREND THEN YOU ACCEPT PEOPLE FOR WHO THEY ARE
@maxismax100 Is this a joke? I doubt you could read back what you just wrote and understand it completely. Is this some sort of joke? Im beginning to think that it was wrote by a Japanese bloke who has forgotten almost all his high school English. What a complete mess. You should be ashamed of yourself.
I checked how old you are because I wasnt sure if I should put you in your box or not, perhaps youre a 16 year old girl or whatnot. By jaysus, youre allegedly 41. It just gets worse for you.
I sorry I gonna have to disagree, yeah America promotes multiculturalism but for the most part the individuality is disappearing. Where I live people act very stereotypical and spend most there time on television, applying that to everything they do in life. PS educated black women learning Japanese that what I'm talkin about we need more sisters like you.
@Roddyreta Thanks! I know alot of people like to put japan into one bag and make judgments. Japanese people are just as varied and unique as we are. Just in their unique japanese way! LOL
