Just had the surgery a few weeks ago....cool to watch the video again after the surgery. Have had zero pain from the time I woke up in the recovery room. Rarely have taken any pain meds...only at night to assure rest and once in a while during long work days. Feeling great so far! Did all chiropractic, phys therapy, etc for 5 years. Too much weakness and continued pain...it was time.
my mum at 33 yrs old had c4 to c7 done she is pain free now an has movement back but still is limited in movment in the neck thats the only down fall for her :)
I had my C6-C7and T1 removed and replaced with bone and titan plates on aug 30th. I go back to work oct 4th, im now back working out with light weights and swimming daily. So far very lil discomfort. ill know in a week or 2 if work hurts.....
I had this done at C5-C6 Sept 2001. Didn't resolve my problems and it's impossible to look up or sideways for any length of time. Make sure you get a second and even third opinion prior to doing this...there may be alternatives because 8 months after I had the procedure my Orthopedic doctor did another MRI on my right shoulder and saw some problems there that were causing me great discomfort. His reaction, "We should have operated on your shoulder." OOPS!!!
I had this surgery last week. Was walking same afternoon.. only four days ago and I was able to drive today with only a little discomfort. I should be completely good to go within another couple of days. Ain't modern medicine awesome?
I've had this surgery done I'n 08 and amazingly enough was walking 12 hours later. The full recovery time is only 4 months for a complete fusion to take.
Mine took 6 due my great Insurance company wouldn't pay to use my own bone graph. Instead they used a donors. . But amazing to have the spinel pressure gone after 14 years of dealing with the pain. I'd recommend this procedure to anyone....
It is very expensive & I had no medical insurance so opted for surgery outside of the USA. Believe it or not BELIZE! Yep Google "Quality of Life Surgery" It was totally affordable & I am now working out & jogging almost everyday without pain. Gonna take me quite some time to lose the weight I put on & build up back the calf muscle in my left leg which had wasted away. Surgery is a huge step to take;any one contemplating doing this please have 2nd & even 3rd opinions & have courage.
I had this op for c6-c7 herniated disc 2007 . i suffered for years with terrible nerve pain radiating down my arm,at times pain was so bad i could not move my arm at all. The surgery was not nearly as bad as what i thought. I was sittiing up in bed the day after op and released 2 days later. My arm pain was gone immediately after op and i returned to work 4 months later. Scar no longer visible Just found out that i`ve to have the another op for herniated c4-c5 discs & bone spurs.
@cowdenhill1968 I am scheduled for the C6-C7 surgery on August 15th; it's good to hear about the quick recoveries of you and so many other patients. I had posterior fusion of C3-C7 last September and I'm still not 100% from that procedure.
@Vernonu9 The surgery went very well; I was out of the hospital the next day. The only discomfort was difficulty swallowing for 2-3 days. My right thumb is still somewhat numb but keeps improving and I expect it will eventually feel normal. I still have some discomfort from my posterior fusion (C3-C7) in September of 2010, but I am making progress on that too.
@phritzg Thanks. I have a chiropractor with 20+ yrs of experience saying "don't operate". I have the neurosurgeon with 20+yrs of experience saying "operate". My pain seems to be leaving slowly, but my tricep is still weak. Still some tingling/numbness in thumb and index finger. I'm stumped.
@Vernonu9 Have they done an MRI on you? If they have and it shows a bulging disc, the surgical option is probably the better way to go. Some people get temporary relief from chiropractors, but surgery has better odds of long term relief from what I've heard and read.
@phritzg yes, the MRI was completed last wk and the disc is herniated. A big, honkin, herniated disc was the neurosurgeons exact words. I viewed the MRI and I allowed the Chiropractor to see it too. They both still stand by their individual methods. (sigh)
@Vernonu9 If it were me (again) I'd go with the neurosurgeon, even though they cannot guarantee with 100% cerrtainty of success. If you do, I hope you have good insurance; mine cost about $30,000, but was 100% paid by the VA, because I am a category 1 disabled vet. Good luck with whatever you decide.
@phritzg thanks for the advice. My insurance is better than some, less than others. Im sure I'd end up paying 20%. Thank you for your service, Merry Christmas.
@Vernonu9 Do the surgerymI had it done on Dec. 20th,after 12 years of Chiropractic saying dont do it,and the symptoms kept coming back worse and worse each time, save yourself years of pain and do it now.

I just had this surgery. Outpatient. Operated on Monday morning. Back to work on Thursday. No pain. Just sore throat from the breathing tube.
