im sorry i know how it feels when a animal dies people say u can allways get another but u can't get that one back , u can't revive him it just hurts ur heart
Whats the update on your Tancho? is he doing better? I wish we were next door neighbors cause I would love for you to be my mentor in this hobby? Take a look at my fish and tell me what you think.
My pond got destroyed by a tornado so I'm rebuilding one which will take time.
one of my yamabuki ogons died in one of its high speeds ..this time it slamed into the pond wall and i found it swimming up and down and slowly it stoped and i knew it was dead 20 mins later i am sorry for your lost i hav also lost quite a few jumbo koi's which were quite dear to me
@orientaljoe Is your pond on the small side? Slamming into walls is one of the downsides of a smallish pond. My koi didn't slam into the wall, I was there witnessing everything, from when she was eating normally to suddenly all this happening.
Hooinc if you freeze the video at :08 she releases some gas. maybe there was something wrong with her stomach? or did you find out what was wrong with her. Btw Im sorry for your loss. Ive lost some jumbo koi before and I know what its like because the koi that ive lost would come to the edge of the pond and eat from my hand. and I still cant find another koi that will do that
I'm really sorry for your loss, it must be devastating. I cry when I lose my koi and they're only a few inches long. However, I think I may know what happened to her. You said that you had fed them and then she started to do this, well I think that when she food she ate too much and when it expanded in her stomach it compressed her swimm bladder and when she spazzed out it put so much tention on it that it ruptured thus causing the gas bubbles to come out of her vent and gills.
@dolittle1992 I was feeding sinking food, which doesn't expand half as much as floating food. And I had only just started feeding for about a minute. She ate a little but not that much. Maybe just a few pellets. I don't think expansion could have happened in seconds.
@3nergyking No copper in my water, nor zinc or lead. Tested professionally already. If there was any, all the rest of my fish would be dead by now too.
Big tancho. Little advice for maybe future. Go to the fish store and get a small air pump. Like the one for aquariums and put it in your pond. You don't need a big one. Remember though you can't use outside unless if you build a housing around it.
Yes indeed, and it all developed right in front of my eyes! Everything was perfectly normal till it suddenly happened and within 20 minutes it was all over. She was a very friendly fish, and was like my chagoi in the absence of one.
I have been advised that the koi likely died from being overladen with eggs. This is one of the risks we face with raising female koi without the 4 seasons, unless we intentionally spawn them.
this is a real shame paul :S a very beautiful kohaku indeed... losing a koi is the worst aspect of our hobby, luckily your other koi are doing fine, my condolences bro
Thanks. Yep, the rest are fine, other than my pop eyed tancho in my avatar which has swim bladder problem. I suspect she will not see the end of next year. She's had this condition for 16 months already.
one thing comes to mind, totally speculation on my part, is that for serious koi keepers, the volume of feeds daily is often much higher than in wild natural setting (where there is more of a variety), a bit like sumo diet if you will, with higher body fat as a result. i wonder if that plays a role to koi fish health in the long run...is there a tradeoff between long term health and short term bulking up...
Yes, that may indeed be a distinct possibility and something that we have to live with if we want to have well-built show koi in our ponds, unfortunately.
human do not die until our heart or lungs fail. in your case, your water condition cannot be a suspect (can't say that for many others'). so i wonder if it may productive to investigate on that track to see if the cardio or the resp system of that fish was compromised. take care and best regards. better times just around the corner!
I am also seeking input from hobbyists more knowledgeable than myself as to what might have happened. One strange thing that I noticed (only later, upon examining the video) was the small bubble stream emerging from her vent. I don't think it was the water condition otherwise other koi would be affected too.
my speculation is that perhaps at that point her gill function is shutting down, so any air bubbles that she swallowed near the surface at her last moments cannot be effectively "processed" as usual?
for someone as helpful and kind like you, i cannot imagine how hard this can be. i wonder if you can try to make something positive out of this. is there an aquarium park near where you live where there are qualified marine biological vets that can help find the cause for this. con't
I'm of the understanding that the marine biologists/vets can only make a meaningful assessment if the fish is brought to them within 30mins of dying, and even then it must be ice packed. This was not possible since it happened at night.
im sorry for your loss, such a beautiful fish, so much time, truly sad. you tried. she looked great, very odd that she passed under the circumstances. again im truly sorry.

@dolittle1992 No worries, and much appreciated.

Hi,
I think I know why yours died because mine died the same way.
I had cooper in my lines for the pump and galvanized steel. This is very toxic to the fish and it killed all my big ones.

BTW, your fish I just noticed blew air bubbles through its butt. I wonder what that meant?
3nergyking 1 year ago
Hi,
I think sometimes it could be the oxygen level in your pond. This had happened to stingrays a few years back in a zoo.
3nergyking 1 year ago
Meaning O2 level too high or too low?
hooinc 1 year ago
I think too low, BTW how big is your Tancho in inches?
3nergyking 1 year ago
My TDO level is 8.0ppm. My tancho is about 28 inches.

Small air pump? For what?
hooinc 1 year ago
Because if fish need oxygen they will swim to it. Adds more O2 and for water aeration.
3nergyking 1 year ago
Watch V44. I already have 2 giant air pumps.

sorry for your loss, how long did you have her for.

I bought her as a 56cm nisai in January 2007 so I had her for just about 3 years.
