I am a heretic. I believe in God, but i do feel that the words preached in churches today are far skewed and twisted to fit the personal objectives of the churches. Also the words in the bible cannot all be taken literal. I feel also that science and the religions of the world may, in some way, be intertwined. We posses great love, compassion, empathy and hope and may we further these traits. Spread the word.
I am a heretic. I am an atheist humanist. I try to see good in the world, but it is a rarity in our hate-filled world. But i still have faith in humanity because of those who say they do not care about my disbelief. And when i think of a god or gods, i laugh at the idea. My disbelief cant be changed, because of its gigantic amount of evidence, for evolution and the big bang theory. And it started with this series. Thank you Callum for such an enlightening experience.
I am a heretic. I'm an agnostic humanist. I believe in the overall good of Humanity. I do not believe in a god(s) or a flying spaghetti monster, however I also admit that we do not know all that there is. There is doubt and that doubt will remain for millions of years, until we have exhausted the unknown. Only then, might we know the answers to our greatest questions.
I am a heretic. I believe that we are a child species who is trying to grow up. We are toddlers now, and it is time for us to grow up again, time for us to walk. To investigate our surroundings without the threat of religious fear. It's time for us to grow up.
@rounder421 I am a heretic. I like your analogy but, I feel that we are more in an adolesence not an infancy. We know so much about our world and the information is there for many people but, like teenagers we are disinterested and lash out emotionally when being confronted with our iresponsibility. If we are to come into our adulthood we must confront the wilfull ignorance that has become our polite and comfortable society. Our own neglect of the truth will destroy us.
I am a heretic. I believe that what we do here, is what truly matters. Every kindness, every act of anger from one human to another is what defines us. I believe that life is precious, and should not be disrespected by viewing it as a transient tryout. I believe that I am kind, because I choose to be, not because I fear cosmic retribution, or seek reward. I believe that this place we have is quite amazing, we should rejoice in life.
I am a heretic. I believe in something greater than myself. This "something" is not a supernatural being. This "something" is not mystical forces that defy explanation. This "something" is not a religious sect or a minority extremist religious view. This "something" is something we all can relate to.
That something... is us. Right here. Right now. I am more spellbound by the sheer awesomeness of us, humanity, reaching for the stars, and allowing ourselves to have that something:
I am a heretic. I believe in the good of humankind and I refute the mystic belief that we are evil creatures that must need saving from a deity. I believe the universe is ours to explore and that it will forever challenge us for it has always been the challenge that brings out the best of us. We have explored unknown lands, chartered vast seas, discovered the power the atom and escaped the gravity of our world. The Age of Humanity must begin now and all are welcome regardless of race or creed.
Why do people have trouble with unanswered questions? why must we make up stories to answer them and then insist they are true? why not insist on FACT, on evidence? why do people carry on the obviously ignorant views of their ancestors and trying forming their own views?...my species makes such little sense.

i'm sorry to say this because i love all your work and that of Carl Sagan's, but this tree of life music is, quite literally, TOO good. It detracts from the discussion. One finds themselves sucked into the music more than the video.
Actually Galileo's case is quite complex. Finally he defended his claims with wrong arguments (tides). So while he was right, he was totally wrong in his defense. Galileo was no hero nor martyr. Just stubborn ass, accidentaly right.

I cannot express to you how much I enjoy these videos. You do a masterful job editing the timeless voice of Sagan with beautiful music and compelling images. I think everyone should see these.
A compilation of these videos of Dr.Sagan's epic statements on humanity , coupled with callumCGLP's magic and vision should be placed as a self play audio if we ever launch another Viking project. @FreedomLiberty21 catholicism is not christianity, I have no idea where this sprung up, when I would ask people if they were christian they'd say "No, I'm catholic"
@GoldfishLight is Jesus Christ considered the primary (indeed only) deity of the Catholic faith? yes, then its Christian. Don't bullshit people about what is or isn't a part of Christianity if you don't know.
I grew up in that mind numbing religion (until I reached the age of reason, which for me was when I turned 16)
As far as I know, only Mormons or Jehovah Witnesses are questionable in their association with Christianity. Some scholars have said those two denominations are quasi-Christian
Having faith in something that is unprovable is not the way I want to live.. But I admire the fact that at least we are given a choice to believe what we want.. not just what we hear or see.. It is a gift that is taken for granted.. and taken advantage of..
I don't usually comment on your videos (I only watch them :)) but since this is the 20th part, I'd like to give you a few words of encouragement and say that your editing is great and the material is still going strong. These videos are great educational material for everyone, and the narration of the only public person I truly admire, Carl Sagan, only makes it better.
Callum, thanks for all your work and dedication to bringing the words of Carl Sagan again to life for us. Good luck with your Studies and career hunting. We fans will just have to be patient for the coming uploads.
Why does nobody discuss Giordano Bruno? I mean, I understand, I'm ok with Galileo being talked about, but Giordano didn't "just get to inspect" the torture devices. Being burned at the stake for talking about the universe being full of stars - suns with planets, planets with life - etc. seems like something modern society might want to remember more than it does. At least I didn't hear about him next to Copernicus and Galileo in my earlier years.
Innumerable suns exist. Innumerable Earths revolve around these. Living beings inhabit these worlds. Giordano Bruno, 1548 -1600, Burnt at the stake for heresy.
@silversobe Thank you for shedding light on Giordano Bruno. I never knew of his existence and I was moved by what I read. What a brilliant and brave man he was!
@helpvidz Yes, it is a lawful punishment in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Sudan, Iran, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, and some states in Nigeria. The Old Testament prescribes stoning for a litany of "crimes", the remnants of which are still seen around the world.
@helpvidz Not only this, but even more barbarism, like chopping off hands/feets, gougeing eyes out, witch burning, beheading, all in the name of religion, both Islam and Christianity.
While the victims of stoning are mostly women, men are getting stoned to death as well. Religious executions have other ways of doing the job: hanging, firing squad, lashing to death, burying alive and so on. These are fairly common in some islamic states on the east and africa and christian states mainly in Africa, but you don't have to go too far to find such things.
If you follow the news you'll realize that an awful lot of children are being murdered in the US by their own parents by denying them medicine for religious reasons. Gay teens are bullied to a wretched life and not rarely suicide. Stem cell research is halted on religious grounds, education is constantly under attack, kids are indoctrinated into evil shit, like the original sin, the rapture, dominionism and so on. The list is endless, really.
I hope everyone will forgive me in the coming months as the uploads slow down. Starting my last year as an undergrad and going career-hunting! So the uploads won't be near as fast-and-furious as they have been this summer.
Another really amazing episode, I could listen to Carl speak all day... as a matter of fact I've spent quite a few afternoons going through your playlists doing just that!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate all the effort you've put into compiling these!
Just a small thing I'd like to point out though, you might want to put up a warning with regards to the footage of the stoning...
That footage of stoning was from a movie and a mild Hollywood movie contains worse violence, I believe.
I recommend you to watch a few real footages of stonings / executions. It is enlightening and inspiring to watch people savagely murder other people for the horrible crime of.. having sex before marriage, eating during the time of feast or disobeying other nonsense religious laws. Murdering their peers while praising their respective gods.

it's really difficult to have a bad day when I see a new upload from you. I started an astronomy class this week and we've already talked a little about carl and his impact on the world. I'm really excited for the class, and for this channel
