  • Will Waimea valley create any profits though? I was under the impression that a lack of profits was one of the reasons why ownership has changed so frequently over the past few years...? In any case this seems to be a better deal than potential development under private ownership, given the substantial cultural and environmental resources currently in the valley. That's something we can at least hope to avoid while it is in OHA's hands.

  • The worst part of this giveaway deal is that taxpayers will continue to foot the bill for ongoing costs or whatever else the "partnership" requires. But any future profit can be squandered by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs or misdirected to other programs that benefit individual Kanaka maoli even if they're rich! The land was paid for by the public. Our government should have maintained ownership for ALL of Hawaii's citizens instead of pandering to kanaka maoli and selling the rest of us out.

  • $14Mil was paid by taxpayers of all ethnicities, but ownership was handed over to an agency whose official goal is to redirect public resources to their own ethnic group, Kanaka maoli. OHA could have managed Waimea Valley without demanding the property be deeded to them. Placing the wants/desires of one ethnic group over all others regardless of financial need is bad public policy. Deeding public land sets a terrible precedent that will inhibit future racial harmony. Hawaii for ALL Hawaiians!
