  • I love Billy JO-EL! haha

  • Masterful performance of perhaps his greatest song. That solo is just vicious.

  • lol at the beginning the announcer, Billy JOAL...

  • This is one of those very few songs that just work and almost to perfection. The words, the piano and the harmonica!!!!!

    Charles

  • never seen the cover of his first album? ;)

  • I never knew he had a moustache! And his heathered hairstyle (at that time) made him look like Apollo from Battlestar Galactica. Great vintage video, though!

  • haha he looks really funny with a tash lmao

  • Simply stunning.

  • tfvhfvcrgsx

  • HAHA billy joel with a mustache. So funny.

Anyway, piano man is one of the best songs ever written in the world.

  • rockin!

  • ahh dude billy joel is awesome

  • He's just as good as on the album. Hell, I'd say it's better! I love this song, so much.

  • If only Elton and Billy had started performing together 10 years earlier when they both still had their voices :(

  • you gotta admit though.. its impressive how they've managed to drag along a small peice of their younger selfs :] you can hear a small peice of that younger soul :3

  • Did the Whistle Test just say Billy Jo-el?

  • A mirror of the whole society in billy joels little bar. Great lyrics and a great song!! Love it!!

  • People if you get the chance go see him live! He is going to tour starting March 2009 with Elton John off and on for the next 2 years. Take your children so they can hear some real music and see talent!

  • Exactly!

  • Just saw him 01/02/09 live in Hollywood, FL. He looks different but sounds about the same.

  • The solo in this performance is fucking amazing.

  • they're sharing a drink they call loneliness but it's better than drinking alone...... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hee hee...Billy Jo-el.....announcer really twisted the poor guy's name....

  • his mustache makes me laughh here.

  • i know! im 14 and cant stand the stuff my generation listens to

  • Me too. I'm 14 and I only listen to Queen, Led Zep, Billy Joel, and rock.

  • very talented guy!!

  • This is a great rendition. I've never seen the great one with facial hair either.

The harmonica, the whistling, the incredible vocals AND the virtuoso piano playing - where does this man end?

  • He has a beard for 10+ years now... at least 10.

  • LOVE HIM!!

  • His daughter looks just like him!

  • very beautiful!

  • The band is reading from SHEET MUSIC, obviously they are not his band.

    Anyway, love the video!

  • the piano solo doesn't really fit the mood of the piece, i see why he changed it

  • Actually he tends to you a solo similar to this when performing live...

  • Does anyone know who the drummer is? Defintely before Liberty.

  • i think ther session musicians

  • I disagree I know he always toured with his own musicians. Thanks for responding. I guess we'll have to do some research. Bob

  • Hi All.

I can say with some certainty that it is NOT Doug Stedmeyer playing bass and it sure doesn't look anything like Liberty Devito on drums to me. My guess is that he hopped across the pond to tape the show and hopped back.

I lived in England from 1976-1978 and The Old Grey Whistle Test was one of the shows I made sure to watch.

Too long ago to remember what the "house band" looked like but that being them is a good guess on my part.

  • I remember when i was young listening to that song on and on and on my mom was getting pissed off at me so much i was repeating it haha Reallllly good song!

  • I'm not really a fan of this "You Tube" thing. However, I don't think I could or would ever see this gem any other way. The video is ok and this cut of Piano Man is the anthem I remember hearing as a kid.

  • totally agree! It comes from The Old Grey Whistle Test Years 1975 DVD. It's what made me fall for Billy Joel, it's real and it's fabulous!

  • They need to put out a DVD of his archives. This stuff is great. He sang this at a time when the song wasn't an albatross or the singalong it would later become.

  • Wow! This is the oldest video of Billy Joel that I've ever seen.

  • Best performance of this song i've ever watched...a treasure indeed. Thanks for posting!

  • Good one. Saw him in Bangor, Maine...what a nice show...lots of energy. Over his attitude that seems apparent in this video. A definite musical treasure.
