Canada did not officially participate in the second Gulf War. The soldier in this video was returning from Afghanistan. The reason why people show up when the soldiers come home on the Highway of Heroes is because we want to pay our respects to the fallen and support for the families travelling with the fallen. The bodies of all Canadians soldiers have to go to the Toronto coroner’s office and the public naturally forms to say goodbye on behalf of Canada and the soldiers in Afghanistan.
break4love23 Although I believe that the Iraqi war was none of Canada's business and they should not have fought America's war with them, why dont they do something like this when the soldiers leave Canada to go abroad? Why do they salute them when their dead? (I accidentally deleted this comment, which I responded to).
I do not specifically remember Canadian soldiers being on the bridge. I remember this occasion in particular because it was one of the only times I've seen media helicopters. I have been to the Victoria Park and 401 overpass numerous times and there are normally one or two Canadian Forces members on it, so there easily could have been a soldier or two on hand. There is one young soldier who lives somewhere close by and he usually comes out. I once shook his hand. He is in one of my videos.
Yes and Canada was just given a battalion from the 82nd Airborne Division to command in Afghanistan. Canada will be taking over one of the most hostile regions in Kandahar where an American battle group had tremendous difficulties. Referring to Kandahar City, US Brig-Gen Frederick Hodges said of the Canadian Army on December 1st, For the longest time you had very, very brave Canadians in very small numbers in a city." At least 3 Canadian generals have also commanded American troops in Iraq.
As a New Zealander who has lived in the States now for the past 20 years, I've laughed at jokes about Canada. NEVER again will I. In fact, from this day forward I shall stand-up for Canada's dignity - the very dignity this video so perfectly conveys. God bless you Canada!
I was on that same overpass, and shot some video (also posted on youtube), but was standing more to the left, over the collector lanes. It was my first time on the Highway of Heroes to welcome them back home, and it was a very emotional moment... a number of people, including my wife and I, shed a few tears.
Yep absolute total respect for the people of Canada. Hold your head high, this Australian salutes your decency.

I was on the Ontario Street bridge in Beamsville today, very touching to see all the cars and trucks stop on the Toronto bound lanes of the QEW.

I was at the Conlins Bridge and there were at least 100 people there as well. It was a touching moment.
