Thank you so much I knew Boris Karloff did a version of this. I was in first grade and remember watching this on TV it was in fact the first time I heard this song and thought this was the original until a few years later when everyone I knew insisted that only Bobby Picket did this. I thought for years that I must have remembered it wrong. Seeing your video just brought back into focus my actual memory of this very cool version. I hope someone digs up the whole video of this some day.
I just love it. This is soooo cute and makes me miss old Boris. I saw it on Shindig back in the day......as long as it had a great beat it was cool and clean. We did the 'mash' real fast off of this....fun! Great Halloween party music for kids or adults I think. : )
Isn't YouTube a wonderful joy - enabling everyone to revisit the wonderful past world of music! How else would we see and hear these wonderful oldies! Thanks so much for posting.
This is the song I listen to repeatedly in my basement while drinking sour mash out of my boot and pointing a gun at the paining of my mother on the wall. Bang! Bang! Bang! You'll never take me back you whore!
It's not really him, but this song is great no matter what! That said I believe I have heard the original one with him on a website. Just when you think he can't get any more epic he does stuff like this!
I'd always heard there was a version of Monster Mash by Boris Karloff, but I've never been able to find it and I'm Mr. Halloween of Nightmare City Halloween, the oldest running Halloween radio program!! Thanks for this share!
Great site! I have it under my favorites and check it out regularly.
The hero here is Lionelatwill for finding the original audio of the Shindig episode where Boris actually sang the song. He taped the audio with his reel to reel next to the TV. Genius! I put it to video recreation and is under the video responses on this page. Glad you liked it and I'm looking forward to check out more on your site in the next few weeks, with Halloween season coming, the best time of the year!!!@siys
Boris Karloff, Peter Cushing, Lon Chaney, Vincent Price, & All The Other Greats Are Gone!!! Only Christopher Lee remains. When he passes away, That will be a Great Loss For Everyone Who Love Great Horror Movies!!!!
I put on my computer the version that sounds like Boris Karloff and the video showing Bobby Picket at a Halloween party. He sang Monster Mash as the party. Now I would think that even after so many years the voices would sound somewhat alike. But they don't!
It would have been great if he would have released his own studio version, but the clip has been found, and although very short at under a minute, I think he nails it. You can hear the missing minutes of the Shindig episode and see my other video recreation by clicking the link above under video responses. It even has the classic Lurch segment, also missing. This clip was taken from the show "Shivaree".
I made a second clip with the actual Karloff audio, along with the rest of the missing songs from the Shindig episode once it was discovered. It's above under video responses. This video was made a couple years ago when all I had was Bobby's version.
You are right, Grausig13. Being a lifetime Bobby Boris Pickett Monster Mash super-fan for my entire life makes me assume that everyone knows this, and recognizes his voice. Unfortunately this is not true. I fixed the the notes on the video to now explain this. Thanks for the heads-up.
Actually ayokay123 the authentic audio is the above link from lionelatwill. And a huge thanks to him for recording it 44 years ago, and preserving the reel to reel tape with special care. I put a video recreation together with clips from the original show and the original audio, and you can find it at the godzzla you tube link above titled 'Shindig Halloween Recreated w/ Boris & the Monster Mash.'
Truly awesome! I faintly recall seeing this scene on TV when it first aired (I was only eight years old, so naturally my memory is a bit hazy). I love the late great Mr Karloff. Truly one of the great screen icons! And 'Monster Mash" is one of the best novelty songs of all time. Thanks for sharing with us!
You ever notice that the most famous horror stars were really some of the best actors of our time? Boris was stuck in a wheelchair when he did this and Vincent Price turned garbage roles into pure gold. But these days, the youngsters seem to spend most of their time in rehab.
well Coelacanth your right about the famous horror movie stars of the golden age of our time but i stll say that the bat man should sing the classic monster mash song don't you agee?
CRAZY!!! GOTTA LOVE OLD BORIS. I do remember seeing this on tv when it originally aired I think it was on American Bandstand over 40 yrs. ago. There will never be another quite like Karloff.
There was a missing video segment to a Shindig episode where Boris Karloff actually sang the song. I made this clip a few months ago because it couldn't be found, and yes, you're right, it is Pickett singing the song. The title refers to Karloff visually singing the song. Thanks to Lionelatwill, however, the real audio clip was found. An amazing find.
godzzla, I have just opened an account with You Tube, because I discovered your tapes. Wow! Thank you. What do you know regarding that?
I have a question: Monstar Mash was by Boris Pickett and the Crypt Kickers but I also Boris Karloff was famous as the mummy and other horror things so did you mean Boris Pickett sings the Monster Mash above or Boris Karloff ? Was curious if the two Boris's were being confused ?

OK, I was up late last night and I posted the audio of Boris doing monster mash from 1965. The short version is on youtube and the long, complete segment is on google video. shouldn't be hard to find. Happy Halloween!!
I remember the original broadcast well, I recorded (the sound only) on a reel to reel tape recorder. I know I still have that tape put away somewhere. Although I haven't heard it in quite awhile, I do remember it. Boris talked more than sang through the first few lines of the song, afterwich it morphed into Ted Cassidy doing "The Learch" a novelty number with a lot of grunts. As a kid I remember searching all the stores for this record with no success.
There's something truly marvelous about the idea of Bobby Pickett's brilliant Boris Karloff impression being re-enacted by Karloff himself. Multiple levels of reality and artifice overlapping.
That's I gore.
