  • yep im still listening, one year older and love it still.

  • goalpost---awesome brother, us calif hippies useta roll around in a Ford EconolineVan, getting high and listening to BOTH Jerry's, Rafferty and Garcia.

  • This LP is one of my faves. Great from start to finish. IMHO, one of the top 25 LPs of all time.

  • Mike Penders Searchers use to do this song in their shows, brilliantly

  • i love this song but then i love ALL his music, its the real deal, rip Gerry never be forgotten.

  • Got the remastered, re-released City To City CD today - it is phenomenal. Go buy it....put Gerry Rafferty back at the top where he truly belongs.

  • IMHO. Snakes and Ladders tops all but then is there a GR song I've disregarded? No. All of them are pure gold. I wish someone will post "Cafe Le Cabotin" and "Syncopating Sandy" all from Snakes and Ladders album.

  • Remember hearing Baker Street and Right Down The Line, but why was this not on the radio? Baker Street was played ad infintium - summer 78

  • Played this album non stop when it came out. Moved to London from Aberdeen with my work in 1979 and managed to last six months - absolutely hated it and was so homesick for my hometown and Irn Bru. Whenever I hear this track, I am back on the sleeper train, on my way home, holding my cassette player to my ear......skint and with no job but absolutely ecstatic - I'm coming home!! Woooooo!

  • City to City is FINALLY .being released in a remastered version....2 discs with extras inc the elusive Baker street b side......check out Amazon

    Jim

  • @captainsoul1953 Don't suppose you know what version of the album has been remastered? I have a uk cd version of it from the late 80s and also an old uk vinyl copy from the mid-80's and the vinyl plays at a noticeable quicker speed. Think i read somewhere it was sped up a bit for the U.S. Market!?

    Regards. David.

  • @DCHurlford1

David...theres a new remastered version just released...2 disc package with demos etc...check out Amazon

    regards

    Jim

  • @captainsoul1953 Cheers for that Jim (much appreciated). Gave a few tracks a listen on my free Spoitfy service. To my ears anyway the new original album remaster speed sounds somewhere in the middle of my old cd and sped up vinyl versions ha ha. Yeah the early studio take of Take the Money and Run is good, has a kinda funky feel to it and the original demo of M's Rag is nice. I know £11.99 isn't that steep but i'll probably wait a wee while until it comes down in price a bit.

  • gerry forever.

  • This song is running slow. Like you recorded it from a record and it was't moving fast enough. Delete it and upload the original plz.

  • @Nitroxide

Utter crap. Get your laptop speakers checked

  • @steve998 watch?v=a6PE0_Zv4AI has the original from vinyl and you can hear the difference yourself before you get all uppity. Start both at the same time and you'll find that this one is indeed running slower. Get your ears checked.

  • Easily one of the most emotionally moving songs I've ever heard. Sad we lost Jerry recently.

  • maybe someone can answer this for me. In the early 80's i believe Gerry did a song called "What Can I Do". I'm not sure that is the exact title of the song, but I loved it. Had a flute in it. anyone help me?

    thanks

  • @TheLadandLass

The song's "Royal Mile" from the album "Baker Street". Cheers.

  • This song is awesome, I just ordered the whole City to City album off of Amazon. One of the most underated singers of all time, he will be missed RIP Gerry Rafferty

  • brokertom, i wonder how many lifes music has saved?

  • Puts a smile on your face - nice one man

  • The 12" LP version of this song is slightly faster tempo, anybody else notice?

  • So many of his songs have been my favourites since the 70's.....what a talented man....Days Gone Down is my all time favourite....I hope he is proud of what he gave us wherever he is now......RIP Gerry.......I have a feeling you were more successful than you ever knew........

  • @jvjujyfd .....or ever wanted to be <3

  • @jvjujyfd Nice comment. Thank you!!!! I share your sentiments.

  • I've got a real bad drink problem. Help me out man, please.

  • @ArchangelBoab Nobody can my friend, only you can if you want to, go careful and be good to yourself, it might be legal but it aint no good in excess, as you well know, take control its up to you, I know its a bastard!

  • @Darrell9029 Thanks for your considered and kind remarks. I started just yesterday. I got help. Made the calls, saw a shrink. Got something to alleviate the DTs. One day at a time, right? (Not that I go in for AA - find it oddly creepy). Anyway. Probably enough information. Thanks. Sincerely. Peace to you.

  • RIP GERRY YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED BY ALL OF US

  • paisleys finest buddie

  • Thank you for the music Gerry, RIP.

  • What a great song!

Turn on your CD, sing along, have fun!!!!

    Woohooo woohooo

Gerry - sad, that you passed away :(

Great songwriting, lyrics coming deep from the heart, and brillant voice (best one in rock as I believe!) - what else do you need for a great song?

Here's to you, Gerry - you're alive as long as anyone plays your songs!

  • Listen to that train rolling on...

  • R.I.P. A much missed songwriter with a unique voice for a Scotsman. I must get some of his back catalogue in the near future, including City To City & Nightowl.

  • Gerry Rafferty - What a songwriter - I play and sing as half of a duo and we have included Gerrys songs in our list for a long time "Stuck in the Middle with you" "City to City" and one that was on YouTube but now isn`t,WHY ? "Don`t give up on Me" (Never can get it to sound right but it`s somewhere near)... One of the greatest. I am the same age and it sure makes me wonder how long we have left. "Whatever`s Written in your Heart" so many memories - RIP Gerry Many of us will miss you a lot

  • Great Song

  • Such a unique voice. Such a unique sound.

    Such a unique man.

    RIP, Gerry. :-(

  • R.I.P. Gerry, from Luxembourg

  • Gerry's whole "City to City" album (not just the song) is amazing...there's not one bad song on the whole disc. Shows the quality and care people had for their art back then.

How many bands these days are lucky to have one or two REALLY good songs, let alone the entire thing?

R.I.P. Gerry, thankfully we have your music to still listen to :)

  • love this album, play it most saturday nights..

  • love this album, play it most saturday nights..

  • City To City - Rafferty, Gerry [Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland] - 1978 - "Just a glimpse of John Patrick Byrne's cool cover art lets the listener know City to City houses Rafferty's day in the sun as he conquers the world one metropolis at a time, his guitar and amp in tow." - City to City/Night Owl - City To City (EMI/Collectables) (Disc 1)-2007. RIP 16 April 1947 – 4 January 2011.

  • Can't believe he's gone you just take people and things for granted then they're gone. Loved this man's music so much,he'll be sadly missed.

  • It's just so sad. Gerry's music brings back such sweet memories.

  • this has so many memories for me........my hubbie worked away and it was one of our songs.................RIP Gerry......sing in heaven

  • Awesome Song that Gerry will be singing right now...R.I.P to a very smooth operator.

Too Young to leave us. I am Sad now.

  • Add his name to the list of fellow famous alcoholics who achieved fame, fortune and notoriety in their respective lives: Ulysses S Grant, Alexander the Great, Ernest Hemingway.

Gerry, you are in wonderful company!

  • This music brings back memories of driving down the snow in the kombi back in the 70's, in fact it became a tradition. I'm so sad to see part of my past gone, he will never be forgotten. RIP Gerry Rafferty

  • I feel soo sad. One of the geatest has left us. But we´ll have his music and beauty of his voice forever. R.I.P ... As long as I´ve got your love, you know that I never leave ... Peace Train is Carrying you Home !!!

  • Gerry has past away today and even if live goes on I feel deeply sad. Bye Gerry I'll miss The Voice.

    Gerard

  • RIP Gerry - thanks for the wonderful music & memories

  • Huge talent. Too bad he didn't have a longer musical career. Glad he was part of my 20's! RIP.

  • Huge talent. Too bad he didn't last. Glad he was part of my 20's!

  • RIP Gerry. Fitting song for your departure.

  • @TimeScaleProductions Gerry drunk himself to death, alas, but we all love him and the songs he composed.

Sure he wrote some fitting songs about his life but I do not think this one was the best one.

The "City to city" album was pure rock´n´roll and nothing about his troubled life.

  • My Dad used to play this album every time we sat down for dinner when I was a kid. Bought it again myself 25 years later.

    God rest ye Gerry

  • I LOVE THIS SONG. RIP GERRY

  • Indeed RIP Gerry.

  • RIP Gerry Rafferty.

  • RIP Gerry, you'll be missed

  • Has anyone else noticed that some parts of the song are very similar to Ryan Aadams' Firecracker although the latter was recorded 23 years after Gerry Rafferty's little gem?

  • London to Edinburgh!

  • what a fuckin cracker tune....

  • @demonsbutterfly f u coon

  • @edlabou ha!! just enjoying the music....

  • @demonsbutterfly why do you have to make a comment like that? are you trying to spoil other people's fun?

  • @throwntomato Sorry mate, do not understand what you mean- I love this song, that's all i ever said.

    Chill out.

  • @demonsbutterfly ok, my bad. :P

  • I had the album on tape back in the 70's, or was it the early 80's? An accomplished artist, what ever happened to him?

  • Love Mr Rafferty brilliant write and singer. Writes for what ever mood you are in at the time Thanks :) xXx

  • this song is a forever reminder of when i was 17 in my brother's car 1973 merc Comet in 1979 in the back seat cruisin' in St-Louis de kent , New Brunswick , Canada....thanks Gerry

  • Gerry needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! He is without a doubt one of the greatest musicians of the past 40 years! From Stealers Wheel to his solo career, Gerry has had a profound impact on society with his music.

  • This song reminds me of my dear departed wife.......

The bastard just up and departed....lol

    Nice to have memories

  • excellent songwritrer.

  • great album have it my self for years! when i bought it copies!!!

  • still my most favorite song by g.r.thank you jg walla

  • Gerry Rafferty is without a doubt the greatest singer and songwriter of the modern age. There are no others like him. His music is MAGIC!

  • First listened to this song when I was in the Army stationed in Korea in 78. The words had special meaning and lifted me from a bad place.

  • Nice to hear.Great story

  • @brokertom

The liner notes of his greatest hits album noted that Gerry took a cross-country camping trip with his family in the mid-seventies when it was fashionable for brits to hate on the U.S., post-vietnam, post-watergate. He had a great time and it influenced him in a big way.

  • @pinz2022 Never been fashionable for the British to 'hate' the US. Some of just think you have the knack of voting in truly awful Presidents e.g. Reagan, the Bush family....Then you do something really intelligent like vote in Obama and up pops the 'Tea Party'....the ghost of Herbert Hoover stalks the land.....

  • @brokertom I was in Navy in the middle of a 7 month Med Cruise... I know exactly what you mean!!! :)

  • Gerry accompanied me everywhere I went in my Mazda 323 in the late seventies on tape.

  • @fartguerilla I did the same at the same time in a customized Mazda B1800 truck :-)

  • @fartguerilla thats a good way of putting things into perspective,,,,are the cars as reliable as the bulbs,?,you can be sure of one thing,,you have good taste in music,,,so have l,.,,gerry rafferty,,,,icon,,,get well man theres so much more to do,,,

  • @fartguerilla Yeah, my '79 Scirocco was a Gerry Rafferty-Alan Parosns-Al Stewart-Emerson Lake & Palmer-Boston Mobile!!!! I might have gotten considerably older, but when it comes time for a road trip, I load up the CD player, grab a cup of road coffee, shed those 30+ plus years and let the miles unroll beneath my steering wheel!!!

  • @fartguerilla Gerry & I rolled off many happy miles in a '79 VW Scirocco. Wore out my Blaupunkt on Rafferty, Seger, Al Stewart, Dan Foggleberg, Alan Parsons and the list goes on.

  • yep,......all under !!! great

  • I only knew of GR's hits, and so I recently bought this record at a store without knowing about the magic inside. It has been the best investment I ever made. Damn this album is good!

  • the music in this track is great. i see others commenting on the same thing. love the way the harmonic is used, especially to evoke the sound of a train whistle.

  • I love the solid bass foundation in this song played by Gary Taylor!

  • From the Herd?...must be...if so he did that great vocal on I dont want our loving to die

    Jim

  • That song fits perfect for a chilled ride in a train, or for sountrack in a roadmovie!

  • Great upbeat number from Mr Rafferty with fine harmonica work from Manfred Mann's Paul Jones. Yeah my cd copy of City To City that I got back in the early 90s definately plays a tad slower than the old vinyl my brother had. Maybe they did a botch mastering job when it was transferred to cd back in the late 80s? Caught him on his last tour back in 1993, he was superb as was his band. It's time his old solo albums got remastered as only Can I Have My Money Back? has been done. SWheel cds are good.

  • Thanks for uploading - been looking for this song. Used to listen to it a lot when i was still a kid.

  • This version sounds slowed down compared to my CD version.

  • I have to get our band to learn this .. I've been waiting so long to do this tune ! " CIty to City " was and still is a longtime fave album of mine ... great tunes and lyrics

  • Man, this album is a must !!!

  • Great song. it is done brilliantly by Mike Penders searchers.

  • This is one of the few albums that I can listen to all the way through and enjoy every single song.....excellent!!

  • sound eccezionale.... armonica wery good!

  • & coverart is 10/10!

  • ELO did a song called Down Home Town which has a very similar feel to this. Anyone else notice the similarity?

  • Damn..I have this album...same cover art...etc...

  • Ive never heard anything by Gerry aside from Baker Street. This, as they say, is some good shit.

  • this whole album is as good as this song. baker street is on this album so is right down the line another top 10, and was a top 100 for years.

  • legend

  • i thanked the wrong person, i'm sorry jgwalla.

  • this is also my favorite song. i had a copy of the lp it was on. the rest of the album played except city to city. thank you charlie

  • one of the best guys of the 70's

  • This album is from '78, not '77.

  • That's right

  • I know i tell people all the time about years. And they never fix it. Kind of werid right?

  • The Cover says It ALL!

  • my favorite gerry rafferty song
