I was in the air overhead daytona international that day, and inbound for landing when approach control closed the airport temporarily due to this fatal crash. I had to go to Ormond, and wait for daytona to be reopened. In the NTSB report, the crash was caused by fuel exhaustion. Rest in peace.
The first president to fly in an Aero Commander was Ike not Ronald Reagan. Shrikes are also known as Aero Commanders; Shrike is just that particular model, an outflow of the B-series.
That was a Shrike. Not all prop plane accidents are Aero Commanders. In fact they have a very good safety and structual record. The Aero Commander was the only twin piston engined to have been certified to fly the President of the USA ( at that tme it was Ronald Reagan ). Bob Hoover is the only pilot to have put an Aero and Shrike Commander through loops barrel rolls, eight point hesitation rolls etc and never had an accident flying those planes.
