Ms. Bassey "sells" a song better than anyone. After listening to her you really believe that she is singing her personal life story. Her original version of What Now My Love (before she jazzed it up) was enough to make you believe she was going to slit her wrists after the song ended. Billiant performer.

That said, this song could have been transcribed better for a woman. Instead of "you buy her diamonds" and "you can take you anyplace she wants" a better contrast between Shirley and the other woman would be "she buys you diamonds" and "she can take you anyplace she wants...but I" etc

But maybe when this was released it was not common for women to take men out to dinner and buy them jewelry.
