I've never had a mortgage or car payments & I am about to do battle with VISA over a small amount of debt I ran up last year. I never felt comfortable about doing anything unless I could pay in full in cash. I had gone nearly 18 years with no new clothes last year so it was fun to splash out a little. I do have the cash on hand to pay down the card in full but they keep sticking me with 30 dollar late fees and I have never paid late. My rates just jumped from 14 to 20 percent, time to close.

If a mortgage has been put into a special interest vehicle it has essentially been paid for. Ask your mortgager to show proof that he has the title still, they will not answer me so I stopped paying them. Nothing has happened as they don't have the title to show the debt is still theirs. It has been sold off, probably the day after I signed the papers.

@Boomer1949 Very good advice. The rule of thumb in France is, can it be paid off in less than 10 years on minimum wage? They prefer six years, no more. If not, they don't tend to go for it here. They don't have 30-year loans here, they are way shorter, people think that stuff is nuts, and I agree. I just have never had enough certainly in my life for major debts! Period! I am working on making my second million, BTW!
@CuteCatFaith Your minimum wage must be good, or housing is low cost, to be able to purchase on a 10 yr loan. If anyone making minimum wage in the US was given a 10 yr loan on a home, it would have to be a mobile home or the lending establishment are crooks.
@Boomer1949 There is no one minimum wage in France, there are many. We saw a fine apartment in Selestat, France, last year (Alsace) for 13,000 euros and it was negotiable downward. That could definitely be paid off in less than 10 years on a minimum wage salary! It was a big studio, all rehabbed, 95 sq. meters, low charges and taxes, and Selestat is charming! I have some vids up of it. We regret not buying it. We could get a house and a lot of land for about 50,000 USD in a nice town here.

For a Canadian to feel insecure and condescended to every time an American talks about Canada is typical. Believe me, I'm Canadian, and we're every bit as brainwashed as Americans. There are slight differences, like; Americans are brainwashed into thinking that they're better than every other country in the world, and Canadians are brainwashed into thinking they're better than Americans...that kind of thing etc. We still have fluoride in the water though so we're just as slow, eh!

I asked that question because I have been wondering this about him for a while..it wasn't meant to be, and shouldn't be, controversial. I certainly am not qualified to judge. Well, I guess that I have been going through this phase. A lot of the elect are asleep...I sure used to be...lol...and still nod off once in a while. I quit celebrating christmas 2 years ago and nobody can believe it...like it's the worst thing a person could do...lol. @sent2protect People tease me because I only owned two cars in my life, both owned outright, and two apartments, both owned outright, no mortgages. GOOD FOR YOU! I just don't see how people can live with that kind of debt! I have some credit card debt, cut up the cards last month, first time in debt since 1994, it'll be cleared up shortly. I can borrow it off of my whole life policy and either pay it back, or not. Next thing to go -- my last remaining USD bank account. I am here in Europe.

I can't believe that people in Canada are falling for this. Please people, do your homework and only settle for a loan that is fixed rate and the payments are no more than 1/4 of your monthly net income. No to adjustable loans. No to interest only loans. No to no document loans. Flip that house only works if there are enough suckers out there who believe the housing bubble will never bust, or that jobs will always be there. Please play attention !!

@Boomer1949 Very good advice. The rule of thumb in France is, can it be paid off in less than 10 years on minimum wage? They prefer six years, no more. If not, they don't tend to go for it here. They don't have 30-year loans here, they are way shorter, people think that stuff is nuts, and I agree. I just have never had enough certainly in my life for major debts! Period! I am working on making my second million, BTW!

@CuteCatFaith Your minimum wage must be good, or housing is low cost, to be able to purchase on a 10 yr loan. If anyone making minimum wage in the US was given a 10 yr loan on a home, it would have to be a mobile home or the lending establishment are crooks.

@Boomer1949 There is no one minimum wage in France, there are many. We saw a fine apartment in Selestat, France, last year (Alsace) for 13,000 euros and it was negotiable downward. That could definitely be paid off in less than 10 years on a minimum wage salary! It was a big studio, all rehabbed, 95 sq. meters, low charges and taxes, and Selestat is charming! I have some vids up of it. We regret not buying it. We could get a house and a lot of land for about 50,000 USD in a nice town here.

@Boomer1949 I was born in the USA but gave that country back to the First People, in effect. Lafayette is in the Picpus Cemetery in Paris, not on most maps. A very sad place full of mass graves from the first French Revolution (there were 3). I did a report on him in the fifth grade in Ohio. Did you read about Jefferson's life over here! Woowee! xo
