Hi, I still got a question about the rasterizing option in Illustrator (I'm using CS5), I'm working on a very detailed, scanned in, handdrawn drawing (pencil + fineliner), and I'm trying to vectorize it. Now like your example it's also a JPEG (saved with Photoshop, after some erasing of lines) that I placed into Illustrator, but it's b&w and very big (2868x2541 px) - it has the width of an A4. Once I place this in AI, do I have to rasterize it (cuz it already shows 'make' as a live trace option?
@njgmovies07 I'm asking this cause you said you'd only have to rasterize a JPEG once its not giving you the live trace option 'Make' - but at my drawing it does.
What is the point of rasterizing a JPEG object - because JPEG already is a raster/bitmap format, right?
Does rasterizing a large drawing decrease a JPEG's filesize, or does it increase by doing that? Is it a form of anti-alias? What's its function?
@njgmovies07 I added that part just in case the user used some other file type. Sometimes I try to add solutions for weird problems that may crop up for users. It's like an insurance policy :)
Thank you for taking the time to give a step by step that breaks down what tools are being selected and what parameters are being adjusted. I've been struggling with cleaning up my drawings in photoshop for animations, and I think It's time to transition to cleaning up in Illustrator.
Question - Any tips for bringing "eps Files" or "Vector files" into photoshop?
@derekbanas I plan to use the "live trace" from Illustrator for my drawings, but then do most of the coloring in photoshop. Any problems come to mind with that approach?
@DouglasMeloche If I'm transferring art from illustrator to photoshop I break everything up into layers. Vector art can quickly become hard to manage in photoshop. Everyone develops their own style over the years, normally based off of using tools incorrectly :)
@1angelodc Thanks a bunch :) I record my screen casts with Quicktime X and edit the videos with iMovie. All cheap software that came with my computer. My microphone came with my iPods headphones. If I ever record anything except screen casts I use a Kodak zi8 camera.
Thanks for the 3 tutorials ! I have a question, how do you resize a picture that you bring in illustrator ? like how do you do if you wanna keep the head only and vectorise it ?
@2pacVivant0 You're welcome. To import an image File -> Place and pick image. To convert it into vector art: Object -> Live Trace -> Tracing Options (Style as you like with Preview) Then Object -> Live Paint. Now you can delete anything that is wanted with the lasso tool. Hope that is what you were looking for?
@matinapr Thanks. I used to work for a design firm where I did this for $150 a pop. (Convert jpg to EPS) I was normally required to do at least 20 per day. Not bad money, for my employer :)
@mstevens814 Sorry not sure how to answer this? If you want a tutorial on how to make a logo, I have that on my newthinktank site. If you are having trouble copying layers I'm confused. Can you explain what your trying to do? I've used Illustrator for over 10 yrs, so I'm sure I can figure out your problem.

@njgmovies07 You don't have to rasterize it if Make shows up

@DouglasMeloche Illustrator is used to create vector art. Photoshop is used for raster images like jpegs, gif, etc. What are you looking to do?

Thanks for your great tutorial. It's very "to the point".
What do you use to create your video? What do you use to make the pop up text?
I appreciate your help.
