This is called a traditional Christmas Pickle with no real verified roots to Germany or any other country for that matter, Its just a gimmick for people to purchase it. as a tradition Old world Germans don't display a Christmas tree until Christmas Eve when the kids are out, the mom goes into the other room gets the tree and get is ready to display for when the kids come home.
@jck1979 I'm a German-American too... how are you so sure that "nobody" in Germany still practices this? People in my family do and some friends from Germany still do. In my family, they would just hide a pickle somewhere around the tree, with the gifts, for instance.
Yes, it might be old-fashioned but people still practice this tradition. And yes, it is a "German" tradition... just like the Christmas tree.
I'm actually the 1st generation of my family to be born in America 31 years ago with only 6 relatives here in the USA and the rest of my family and complete family tree from Germany, placing me deep in "Old World German" roots...
This is not a German Tradition... Either know your heritage or do your research... You'll be surprised how many Americans for some reason believe this is a German tradition, and being German myself, no one in Germany practices this. Sorry ~~
It's not my heritage. But, it says on the jar that the ornament came in "In Old World Germany, the last decoration placed on the Christmas Tree was always a pickle..." Perhaps you are just not "Old World German";)

Thanks for the input. When I look on the tag on the jar, I have to admit it does say MADE IN CHINA :)

@jck1979 you do know that traditions change right? you don't practice this because it isn't a very popular tradition anymore.
