Vargas is ideal. He was born for the Duc. The colour of the voice, the style, the interpretation are exactly what we expect for this part. Some tenors bring a bit more of their personality but who can offer something so close of the Duc ?

Florez mejor ke vargas==??? en Duca?? a Florez le queda muy grande el rol del Duca, florez es mejor que siga cantando rossini, porque incluso no todo donizetti le queda bien y tampoco bellini :S

Yo no he dicho que Flórez es mejor Duque que vargas porque obviamente no lo es,si no que me refiero a un proceso que Vargas como todo gran cantante tiene que cumplir.Este tenor mexicano es uno de mis preferidos, pues sabe muy bien utilizar y definir muy bien su técnica para cantar.En cuanto a si debemos darle todo el crédito por solamente cantar a menudo en el met,pues tengo mis reservas al respecto porque hasta Villazón ha cantado allí.

Tienes razon eso del Met, porque una cosa es cantar y otra cantar los años que ya lleva Vargas, pocos tenores hacen eso, y estoy de acuerdo que no es el mejor del mundo, pero gracias al hermoso timbre que tiene y su tecnica le permite cantar con tanta belleza este tipo de repertorio. Y si esta en el top de Tenores actuales es por algo.

Dudo que Florez sea mejor que Vargas en este rol, a Florez le queda demasiado grande el rol del Dunca di Mantua, y su voz es muy pequeña en vivo y sin microfono. Lejos Florez de ser il Duca di Mantua Ideal.

Dotes le sobran. Solo le falta el carisma y por lo tanto, la fama. Lo mismo le pasó a Aragall.

Toda la razón del mundo, mi estimado; Aragall merecía un mejor sitial y una mayor consideración.Espero que Vargas explote mejor su actual relevancia en el mundo de la lírica ya que su voz merece estar al lado de los "grandes".

Although there seems nothing special about the Maddalena, it would be courteous to list her name. It isn't a "quartet" with just Vargas, Rost, and Gavanelli, now, is it?

So, is the high note traditionally sung at the end of the quartet not in the score, or optional? I notice Rost ducks it on this occasion.

The high note isn't in the score.

Lots of traditionally sung high notes aren't in the actual score but the singer is expected to sing them. The High C in "Di Quella Pira" isn't there either (it's a G), but no audience is going to accept that if the tenor doesn't even try for it.

But Moffo, Netrebko, and Anderson didn't sing the high note at the end either. I like it better without the high note, as the final chord is balanced better. And just because someone can sing it doesn't mean they should. The final note of Di Quella Pira woudl actually be C an octave lower, because verdi would never have ended an aria on the fifth, he would have ended it on the root.
