  • The lyrics to this song might be the most poetic thing ever conceived.

  • "theres no in between"

  • just an excellent vid. A voice matched by nobody, ever! You're the best Elliott

  • because we love you..

  • god this is amazing!

  • best elliott smith song hands down

  • @someDickOnUtube wrong, but to each their own noob,

  • @pitseleh6V6 let me guess you used to like elliot smith.......when he was underground. give me a break you tool box

  • @someDickOnUtube Nah brah, I don't even know where you got that idea from scrub. Your the one making claims that this is his best song "hands down," when your wrong. Not only is that a subjective statement but I think in actual popularity King's Crossing wouldn't win as fan's faves, youtubes views could prob debunk that. Personally my fave songs are: pitseleh, condor ave., needle in the hay, georgia georgia, unlucky charm, all my rowdy friends cover, from a poison well,,, so many others.

  • @pitseleh6V6 oh really "brah". don't mean to be a 'scrub" over here. just because your trolling and someone calls you out you don't need to break out your hipster spelling words on me. Lyrically i relate to this song the most and wheni saw him in high school this was the best song he played...in my opnion. Don't be a d bag and comment on someones opinion of something you obviously like. that makes you a hipster troll one of the worst breeds

  • @someDickOnUtube cool story bro

  • @someDickOnUtube I love all his songs, and he isn't even that mainstream bro.

  • @pitseleh6V6 when he was alive he actually was pretty big.

  • @someDickOnUtube Not enjoyed enough.

  • @someDickOnUtube He should have way more plays and fans. Elliott Smith is absolutely amazing, my love forever. RIP Elliott

  • Because we love you

  • So beautifully done.

  • his cadence in this song is sublime

  • Thank you.

  • 6 people have no soul

  • its been awhile since ive listened to elliott but surprisingly i still know the words to this song. you just dont forget music like this.

    Rest In Paradise elliott

  • )= wow

  • For some reason, when he says "fuck up," the sound in his voice brings tears to my eyes. "Because we love you." We do love you. You'll be loved forever and ever, Elliott. Rest in peace, buddy.

  • it's about relapse not suicide

  • it's a song about relapse, not suicide...

  • c'est incroyable,il est jamais aussi emouvant que dans le mal,on sent integralement que ça allait pas trop là...

  • I don't really care about 6 people, I'm just enjoying this among with the other 752 people. This is damn good, so shame to lose all the best musicians so young...

  • Elliott influenced my music..

    ~thanks, and thank you Elliott

  • Damn... suicide song... sad

  • because we love you.

  • 5 people have no heart.

  • Merry Christmas everyone, glad to see my comment is still on the front page from last year :)

    RIP Elliott, you are missed

  • @JBobTC shame that the reference is about him going to score from his dealer, but nice sentiments anyway.

  • @negrosaurus @donkeywithsimpizzazz lol at you guys the same old talki of the 20 century go on now on 2011

  • god damn this is hard to listen to, we miss you elliott

  • the 6 people that disliked this represent everything thats wrong with this world

  • @donkeywithsumpizzazz No, they represent 6 people who didn't like the video.

  • Comment removed

  • @donkeywithsumpizzazz No, those 6 people are entitled to their opinion. Just enjoy what you enjoy and don't be elitist about it.

  • @negrosaurus Elitists r what this countrys all about. Deal with it

  • becuze i loovr u

  • open your parachute and grab your gun, falling down like an omen a setting sun.

  • chills every time, bitches

  • 2:23 "because we love you, smith"

  • to be completely honest, this is one of the best songs ever recorded.............

  • Elliott Smith RIP. What is it now? 7 years.......

  • This is proof he came out of that fall and was actually playing again.

  • 6 people like justin beiber

  • definitely one of my favorite songs by him. god i love him and his words and what they do for me

  • Because we love you

  • @jxkenny Because we love you.

  • why can't we all just appreciate the beautiful, talented man that he was, regardless of heroin/suicide/murder/wtf...the music speaks for itself. and it speaks for itself over and over again, and it will always do so. that's the beauty of music. the man might not be here, but his musical legacy will always be.

  • @costanzo42 You said it man, he lives in us all, even if we never knew him. His birthday was the other day, my friends and I made him a cake.

  • @costanzo42 Well the music was beautiful, he, not so much.

Probably would have been interesting to know though.

  • man why oh why did elliot have 2 leave us, our world has gone mad, we mourn over michael jackson, crave lady gaga, but hardly notice the real talent that departs, elliot was a real genius and human bein who ignored the fame and riches and truly played for his music, p.s i love it when the guy goes 'yeah' at the beginnin he knows something special is about to go down

  • "I cant prepare for death anymore than I already have" -That's the line genius.

  • Prepared for death, he had no joy in life that's why he did heroin..."Going on date with a rich white lady, ain't life great? give me one good reason not to do it" Just admit it. It's about heroin. I don't know why am I even arguing, it's so fucking obvious.

  • @mokaszin "i can't prepare for death, but in a sense i already have" a perfect line to show his lack of joy in life

  • yeah....

  • Because we love you...

  • Because we love you

  • Just because he did suicide everyone categorizes him as some emo creep. If you think this song is about suicide, please die. Every part of being a drug addict is involved in this song. Including rehab in the end. Watching the shells while stoned..."frustrated fireworks inside my head"...Starting with beer and whiskey but "dominos are falling in the chain reaction"...not to mention skinny santa, the needles on the tree and the rich white lady.

  • @mokaszin I can't prepare for death anymore than I already have, and because I took my own insides out, both are referring to suicide. Yeah a lot of the song is about heroin, but suicide is referred to in the song.

  • Evidence for what? this is about heroin. not suicide

  • @mokaszin i suspect its about both, but the lyrics are too cryptic to conclude that with certainty

  • @mokaszin OH yea Is that what Elliott told you?

  • best show ever

  • Just posted a cover of King's Crossing on my youtube page...

  • because we love you

  • "I've seen the movie, and I know what happens..." Just wish I didn't...and sure wish you hadn't. Miss you bud.

  • this song is awesome, so glad there's a live recording

  • The audience didn't say it...

  • @totlyepic lamesauce.

  • @totlyepic Because the song hadn't been released yet. It was released after his death to the public.

  • @rhrooman Its inclusion on the album is because it was done at live shows.

  • I'm thankful that this video exists thank you joshyleearm and of course thank you Elliott . one good reason, because we love you

  • I took all my insides out...

    sooo goddamn sad.

  • This is just such a sad song for so many reasons.

It's so emotional when he says "Give me one good reason not to do it" because in the album version his girlfriend and sister recorded "Because we love you" and would yell it at some of his live shows.

  • because we love you

  • whos the yeah guy!

  • @ooglizer a man that appreaciates top music

  • I still think that Elliott Smith didn't kill himself. nobody commits suicide by stabbing themselves in the chest...twice.

  • it'd be tough to punch yourself in the face until you die, itd be easy to shoot yourself twice in the head if thats what it took. hard to say about a knife, but there's some validity. if you miss, options are: hospital and attention (opposite of his intention) or try again.

  • @northkato No one would do that, far too painful.

  • @northkato

Elliott actually died by knife wounds which could have been self-inflicted, I think.

  • @filmcow I think this song is all the evidence anyone needs to realize that he did it.

  • I prefer the studio version. I know I should dig the live element, but I can immerse myself in the song better with all the percussion and that great piano work.

  • @roller

Thank you for totally validating my opinion.

  • Youtube would be so much better without comments.

  • hehe irony

  • @tanables YES YES YES YES

    haha counterintuitive, sort of.

  • With all the lyrics about drugs/drug dealer I think he is talking about using again

  • when he says give me one good reason not to do it, is he talking about suicide or heroin?? or neither

  • i always took it to mean suicide

  • yea my friend pointed that out to me i was just bein naive before, thanks tho

  • heroin is suicide?

  • <3 Elliott Smith. We miss you so much.

  • miss elliott. goosebumps is what this song is. f*cking awesome

  • The song gives me chills at the end when he keeps repeating that line.I could cry, he looked so sad towards the end.

  • check out my cover of this song on my channel. enjoy

  • how bout cobain and smith were very good songwriters

  • It's Christmas time, and the needles on the tree

A skinny Santa is bringing something to me

His voice is overwhelming, but his speech is slurred

And I only understand every other word

    Merry Christmas brother.

  • open up parachute and grab your gun!!!

  • @JBobTC MERRY CHRISTMAS

  • i miss you. you took the easy way out. and whiskey does work better than beer..rip man

  • excellent song from a wonderful singer/songwriter.

  • he died on my 19 birthday and now for every birthday i spend at least an hour listening to his songs. hope you found some peace elliott.

  • love

  • asolutely compelling

  • the BEST OF ALLLLL TIME!!!

  • Defnitely one of my favorite songs by him. Probably because it was the first cd i bought of his but amazing nonetheless.

And I love how quiet it gets at the venue when he plays. You'd think it was at a small place but then you hear how many ppl are really there when they cheer at the end. Its always like that....LOVE it.

Miss you Elliott. Thanks for the beautiful music.

  • "because i took my own insides out"

  • There are very few artists who consistantly create high quality music throughout their careers of 5-10 years. Elliott is definitely one of these artists.

Many Elliott fans are torn between his earlier work and later work because of the progression into more noisy rock, but examples such as "King's Crossing" don't allow me to be included with these fans.

  • well put.

  • ah, 10/21.

    i love you elliott.

  • R.I.P. Elliott Smith<3 I love you.

  • It's a tragedy that such a genius had to die so young, but on the other hand his depression is what gave his music and lyrics such incredible power. Sadness is a strong emotion.

  • "I don't care if I fuck up

    I'm goin on a date

with a rich white lady, ain't life great?"

  • Another great tune from Elliot smith.

  • wow.

    beautiful.

    eerie.

    elliott.

he looks strung out as hell.

"I can't prepare for death anymore than I already have"

  • You're so poetic, man.

Just kidding, people like you are why everyone hates Elliott's fans.

  • give me one good reason not to do it

  • or is there not much a comparison there cuz cobain did some pre heavy music and elliott stuck with the softer stuff though he does have some pre heavy tunes as well...

  • i use to be a hardcore die hard Kurt Cobain fan and still love him to this day... but Elliott Smith is possibly better.. as far as being a overall songwriter goes. Elliott's got just as good if not better lyrics and hes way better on the guitar... what do u think??? Cobain or Smith?!?!

  • i think cobain and smith :) but smith is num' 1

  • kurt cobain's biggest dream was to be just like elliott smith!!! elliott smith is god! no one beats him as a singer/songwriter!!

RIP ELLIOTT U WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN OR REPLACED!!!

  • @youarealoser0007

I've only been a Elliott Smith fan for about 2 years, and i've been a Kurt Cobain fan for almost 5 years, They both impacted my life drastically. I cant say which one i like more because i love them equally, sure Elliott Smith was a great guitarist and could sing better than Kurt, the both have equivalent value to me

  • never compare elliott smith to someone like kurt cobain. elliott was a heartfelt god. kurt was not.

  • jesus why do people always have to compare great writers when their styles are both so fucking different? I'm huge fans of both Elliott and Kurt, and their the best at what they do, that being two completely different genres. Stop this shit before it gets started, no one EVER wins.

  • @Pallidon24 Agreed - the only Kurt and Elliott had in common is that they were both songwriters and they're both dead. And they both may have banged Mary Lou Lord, but this is not the place to discuss such things :)

  • i always hear about people saying that particular musicians "impact" their life and all that...i never understood what they mean.

i can relate to people really liking the work of certain musicians a lot , but what do you guys mean when you talk like that?

  • First off, all those people above, full of shit, I'm not particularly keen on Elliott's fans they're fucking mental. But I will tell you one thing, there's passion there, and what they mean, It's not really something anybody could really relay in human words, when you hear it, you know. I know that sounds elusive and like bullshit, but it's a very apparent thing. And if you never find that kind of intervention in music, well, I dunno what to tell you, but it's fucking magical.

  • i think i see where you're coming from, but don't you think that it's taking it a little too far when people say that a musician's work "changed their life" and all that?

i don't know, talking about beauty is kinda pointless. it's probably just best to sit back and marvel at people like elliott. thanks for the response though, it had a pleasant grit to it that's not come upon that often.

  • God, I miss you man!

  • where was this at??

  • To me it seems this is one of the few live performances where elliott's composure is different . In a lot of videos he's nervous and very aware of the crowd. A missed chord or someone walking by the set could throw him off and more than likely he'd cut the song short. But in this video he's there to really deliver a message, he's stopped caring about the crowd, fucking up, and himself as well. This version is extremely beautiful but is sad to see elliott in such a depressed state of being...RIP

  • I totally agree with LYKNDAMUZIC.....

this video is perfection...most likely my #1 favorite song by Mr. Smith, besides 'strung out again' , and ' a fond farewell'

    R.I.P. - ain't life great?

  • I actually have something like 915 Elliott Songs on my IPOD. Pretty much every demo and song you could think of and maybe 30 concerts, plus a few collections of live songs both covers and unreleased stuff. I have links for most of it if anyone is interested.

  • @ morbidstingray

    I'm interested

  • that would be my dream ipod!!! i would love to have all 915 songs!!!!

  • im very interested.

    very very very very very.

please contact me though aim if you dont have a aim youtube :]

    :]

    aim; littledeaht92

  • Im interested

  • im interested

  • oh, and I LOVE the studio version of this and everything else on FABOTH. all that "noise" was purposeful. Elliott WANTED it to sound that way. I have the original ROUGH mix by Elliott that is even "noisier" than the one on the album. I have maybe 30 different concerts of his and yes, this song was GREAT acoustic but hearing it the way HE wanted it heard is special. It's like saying, I love Michealangelos 'David' but i preferred the block of stone... I respect the opinion though.

  • I think this song portrays his feelings and his struggle with heroin more than any of his others. The rawness goes so damn well with it.

Think you could send or post the rough mix?

  • While I agree with what you say, keep in mind, FABOTH was released after Smith's death, so the final production's on the album may have been different than what Elliott intended

  • naw, they didnt edit the faboth songs at all because they didnt want to detract from how elliott would have wanted it. they released the songs pretty much as they found them, maybe they levelled the volumes between tracks a bit but as far as i know they didnt edit the tracks at all.

  • amazing performance. Love this song. thanks for posting it. putting this one on the IPOD.

  • BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU!!!

  • 'the method acting that pays my bills, keeps a fat my feeding in beverly hills'

he has a lot of references to pop culture and the dark side of california.

fame, it sure must be hard for someone with a heart like his..

  • I dunno, I'd think anything would be with his heart. Depression is depression :/

  • i cant stand the recorded version of this song. but elliott playing it on his own with his yamaha, its pure perfection. i wish all of the songs he recorded were just solo acoustic versions.

  • please explain... he does have great acoustic chops but his studio work is incredible!!

  • ok i shall have a go. dont get me wrong i adore him. and have no right to criticise elliotts musical taste. but i guess its a combination of elliotts electric guitar tone, the drumming, and piano that doesn't sit right with me. it takes away from the simple beauty of a song. this song is a perfect example. i have to skip this and coast to coast when i listen to basement. because the back ground noise is so angry and aggressive. for me there is no contest between this typically delicate rendition

  • whitestripebuzz, I agree that some of his songs are a bit "over-instrumented", partly because he wanted to prove to himself that he could play everything (which he obviously could). If you can strip a song down and it still sounds good, that's okay, but Smith's songs are sooo much better stripped that it's a sign of a special talent indeed.

  • ran out of space...another example is waltz #2. a live, solo waltz #2 takes my breath away. but the studio recording frustrates me with the excess instruments. i suppose that is why my least favourite smith album is figure 8. i shall stop now haha

  • "but I don't care if I fuck up, I'm going on a date with a rich white lady. Ain't life great. Give me one good reason not to do it" .........so many references to drugs in this song....the rich white lady being heroine and the skinny, white santa being the drug dealer. RIP Elliott...We love you

  • "Give me one reason not to do it..."

Because we love and will always love you

  • lyrically.....this might be my favorite Elliott Smith song....

It gives me the shivers when I hear him talk about doing drugs and ending his life in this song.

    like it was all planned

  • I love the way this song sounds acoustic, so beautiful...

  • can you all leave him alone and just listen to his music and take from it?

  • actually, he tragically took his own life

by stabbing himself in the heart.

    twice.

just appreciate his music for what it is.

he was an incredibly talented musician.

leave his death alone and focus on his creations.

  • I just think its funny how some of you all act like you are so better than others and you think your inferior to them because you think you know it all. its pretty fucking sad
