@someDickOnUtube Nah brah, I don't even know where you got that idea from scrub. Your the one making claims that this is his best song "hands down," when your wrong. Not only is that a subjective statement but I think in actual popularity King's Crossing wouldn't win as fan's faves, youtubes views could prob debunk that. Personally my fave songs are: pitseleh, condor ave., needle in the hay, georgia georgia, unlucky charm, all my rowdy friends cover, from a poison well,,, so many others.
@pitseleh6V6 oh really "brah". don't mean to be a 'scrub" over here. just because your trolling and someone calls you out you don't need to break out your hipster spelling words on me. Lyrically i relate to this song the most and wheni saw him in high school this was the best song he played...in my opnion. Don't be a d bag and comment on someones opinion of something you obviously like. that makes you a hipster troll one of the worst breeds
For some reason, when he says "fuck up," the sound in his voice brings tears to my eyes. "Because we love you." We do love you. You'll be loved forever and ever, Elliott. Rest in peace, buddy.
I don't really care about 6 people, I'm just enjoying this among with the other 752 people. This is damn good, so shame to lose all the best musicians so young...
why can't we all just appreciate the beautiful, talented man that he was, regardless of heroin/suicide/murder/wtf...the music speaks for itself. and it speaks for itself over and over again, and it will always do so. that's the beauty of music. the man might not be here, but his musical legacy will always be.
man why oh why did elliot have 2 leave us, our world has gone mad, we mourn over michael jackson, crave lady gaga, but hardly notice the real talent that departs, elliot was a real genius and human bein who ignored the fame and riches and truly played for his music, p.s i love it when the guy goes 'yeah' at the beginnin he knows something special is about to go down
Prepared for death, he had no joy in life that's why he did heroin..."Going on date with a rich white lady, ain't life great? give me one good reason not to do it" Just admit it. It's about heroin. I don't know why am I even arguing, it's so fucking obvious.
Just because he did suicide everyone categorizes him as some emo creep. If you think this song is about suicide, please die. Every part of being a drug addict is involved in this song. Including rehab in the end. Watching the shells while stoned..."frustrated fireworks inside my head"...Starting with beer and whiskey but "dominos are falling in the chain reaction"...not to mention skinny santa, the needles on the tree and the rich white lady.
@mokaszin I can't prepare for death anymore than I already have, and because I took my own insides out, both are referring to suicide. Yeah a lot of the song is about heroin, but suicide is referred to in the song.
This is just such a sad song for so many reasons.
It's so emotional when he says "Give me one good reason not to do it" because in the album version his girlfriend and sister recorded "Because we love you" and would yell it at some of his live shows.
it'd be tough to punch yourself in the face until you die, itd be easy to shoot yourself twice in the head if thats what it took. hard to say about a knife, but there's some validity. if you miss, options are: hospital and attention (opposite of his intention) or try again.
I prefer the studio version. I know I should dig the live element, but I can immerse myself in the song better with all the percussion and that great piano work.
Defnitely one of my favorite songs by him. Probably because it was the first cd i bought of his but amazing nonetheless.
And I love how quiet it gets at the venue when he plays. You'd think it was at a small place but then you hear how many ppl are really there when they cheer at the end. Its always like that....LOVE it.
There are very few artists who consistantly create high quality music throughout their careers of 5-10 years. Elliott is definitely one of these artists.
Many Elliott fans are torn between his earlier work and later work because of the progression into more noisy rock, but examples such as "King's Crossing" don't allow me to be included with these fans.
It's a tragedy that such a genius had to die so young, but on the other hand his depression is what gave his music and lyrics such incredible power. Sadness is a strong emotion.
or is there not much a comparison there cuz cobain did some pre heavy music and elliott stuck with the softer stuff though he does have some pre heavy tunes as well...
i use to be a hardcore die hard Kurt Cobain fan and still love him to this day... but Elliott Smith is possibly better.. as far as being a overall songwriter goes. Elliott's got just as good if not better lyrics and hes way better on the guitar... what do u think??? Cobain or Smith?!?!
I've only been a Elliott Smith fan for about 2 years, and i've been a Kurt Cobain fan for almost 5 years, They both impacted my life drastically. I cant say which one i like more because i love them equally, sure Elliott Smith was a great guitarist and could sing better than Kurt, the both have equivalent value to me
jesus why do people always have to compare great writers when their styles are both so fucking different? I'm huge fans of both Elliott and Kurt, and their the best at what they do, that being two completely different genres. Stop this shit before it gets started, no one EVER wins.
@Pallidon24 Agreed - the only Kurt and Elliott had in common is that they were both songwriters and they're both dead. And they both may have banged Mary Lou Lord, but this is not the place to discuss such things :)
First off, all those people above, full of shit, I'm not particularly keen on Elliott's fans they're fucking mental. But I will tell you one thing, there's passion there, and what they mean, It's not really something anybody could really relay in human words, when you hear it, you know. I know that sounds elusive and like bullshit, but it's a very apparent thing. And if you never find that kind of intervention in music, well, I dunno what to tell you, but it's fucking magical.
i think i see where you're coming from, but don't you think that it's taking it a little too far when people say that a musician's work "changed their life" and all that?
i don't know, talking about beauty is kinda pointless. it's probably just best to sit back and marvel at people like elliott. thanks for the response though, it had a pleasant grit to it that's not come upon that often.
To me it seems this is one of the few live performances where elliott's composure is different . In a lot of videos he's nervous and very aware of the crowd. A missed chord or someone walking by the set could throw him off and more than likely he'd cut the song short. But in this video he's there to really deliver a message, he's stopped caring about the crowd, fucking up, and himself as well. This version is extremely beautiful but is sad to see elliott in such a depressed state of being...RIP
I actually have something like 915 Elliott Songs on my IPOD. Pretty much every demo and song you could think of and maybe 30 concerts, plus a few collections of live songs both covers and unreleased stuff. I have links for most of it if anyone is interested.
oh, and I LOVE the studio version of this and everything else on FABOTH. all that "noise" was purposeful. Elliott WANTED it to sound that way. I have the original ROUGH mix by Elliott that is even "noisier" than the one on the album. I have maybe 30 different concerts of his and yes, this song was GREAT acoustic but hearing it the way HE wanted it heard is special. It's like saying, I love Michealangelos 'David' but i preferred the block of stone... I respect the opinion though.
While I agree with what you say, keep in mind, FABOTH was released after Smith's death, so the final production's on the album may have been different than what Elliott intended
naw, they didnt edit the faboth songs at all because they didnt want to detract from how elliott would have wanted it. they released the songs pretty much as they found them, maybe they levelled the volumes between tracks a bit but as far as i know they didnt edit the tracks at all.
i cant stand the recorded version of this song. but elliott playing it on his own with his yamaha, its pure perfection. i wish all of the songs he recorded were just solo acoustic versions.
ok i shall have a go. dont get me wrong i adore him. and have no right to criticise elliotts musical taste. but i guess its a combination of elliotts electric guitar tone, the drumming, and piano that doesn't sit right with me. it takes away from the simple beauty of a song. this song is a perfect example. i have to skip this and coast to coast when i listen to basement. because the back ground noise is so angry and aggressive. for me there is no contest between this typically delicate rendition
whitestripebuzz, I agree that some of his songs are a bit "over-instrumented", partly because he wanted to prove to himself that he could play everything (which he obviously could). If you can strip a song down and it still sounds good, that's okay, but Smith's songs are sooo much better stripped that it's a sign of a special talent indeed.
ran out of space...another example is waltz #2. a live, solo waltz #2 takes my breath away. but the studio recording frustrates me with the excess instruments. i suppose that is why my least favourite smith album is figure 8. i shall stop now haha
"but I don't care if I fuck up, I'm going on a date with a rich white lady. Ain't life great. Give me one good reason not to do it" .........so many references to drugs in this song....the rich white lady being heroine and the skinny, white santa being the drug dealer. RIP Elliott...We love you
I just think its funny how some of you all act like you are so better than others and you think your inferior to them because you think you know it all. its pretty fucking sad
The lyrics to this song might be the most poetic thing ever conceived.

oh, and I LOVE the studio version of this and everything else on FABOTH. all that "noise" was purposeful.

I think this song portrays his feelings and his struggle with heroin more than any of his others. The rawness goes so damn well with it.
Think you could send or post the rough mix?

While I agree with what you say, keep in mind, FABOTH was released after Smith's death, so the final production's on the album may have been different than what Elliott intended

naw, they didnt edit the faboth songs at all because they didnt want to detract from how elliott would have wanted it. they released the songs pretty much as they found them, maybe they levelled the volumes between tracks a bit but as far as i know they didnt edit the tracks at all.

'the method acting that pays my bills, keeps a fat my feeding in beverly hills'
he has a lot of references to pop culture and the dark side of california.
fame, it sure must be hard for someone with a heart like his..

I dunno, I'd think anything would be with his heart. Depression is depression :/

i cant stand the recorded version of this song. but elliott playing it on his own with his yamaha, its pure perfection. i wish all of the songs he recorded were just solo acoustic versions.

please explain... he does have great acoustic chops but his studio work is incredible!!

ok i shall have a go. dont get me wrong i adore him. and have no right to criticise elliotts musical taste. but i guess its a combination of elliotts electric guitar tone, the drumming, and piano that doesn't sit right with me. it takes away from the simple beauty of a song. this song is a perfect example. i have to skip this and coast to coast when i listen to basement. because the back ground noise is so angry and aggressive. for me there is no contest between this typically delicate rendition

whitestripebuzz, I agree that some of his songs are a bit "over-instrumented", partly because he wanted to prove to himself that he could play everything (which he obviously could).

RIP Elliott...We love you

lyrically.....this might be my favorite Elliott Smith song....
It gives me the shivers when I hear him talk about doing drugs and ending his life in this song.
like it was all planned

I love the way this song sounds acoustic, so beautiful...

can you all leave him alone and just listen to his music and take from it?

i think he got murdered by the same group who murdered hendrix, morrison, marley, cobain and buckley to name the few rockstars.

actually, he tragically took his own life
by stabbing himself in the heart.
twice.
just appreciate his music for what it is.
he was an incredibly talented musician.
leave his death alone and focus on his creations.

I just think its funny how some of you all act like you are so better than others and you think your inferior to them because you think you know it all. its pretty fucking sad
