Memories....Grandma (who grew up in Germany during the war) would read this/Strewwelpeter, etc to us in German as kids...good thing she also told us what each line meant in English too!
I remember these exact illustrations from the early '60's. I was born in Germany and raised in the US, and my mom used to read this to me in German. The illustrations and the stories--some of them pretty violent--kind of disturbed me, especially when Max and Moritz are ground into chicken feed at the end.

haha used to watch this (we had it on vhs) when i was little, all in german without understanding a word! good times
