This is an excellent series of videos. Thank you for that. However, for future reference, keep the pie plate out of the shot - in the most interesting parts of the video, that's the only thing that the viewer can see.
For the rock strata areas I usually start with a wash of Ultra Marine Blue, then a wash of Oxide Black. It will give the rock strata a grantite look. Then I apply washes of raw umber and Burnt Umber, then Raw Sienna and high light with Yellow Ochre. If you are looking for a clay look, you can also use some Burnt Sienna. Everyone has their own perferred method, but I've found working from dark to light works best for me.
