  • I hear there are size limits to he material? I woulf consider one double your size. You could sew and tape two together without issue, right? like a 10 X 10. Thanks for sharing, nice vid.

  • how strong is that material?

  • Great video...

it's really giving me the courage to switch from u.l. tent to tarp.

    thanks again.

  • looks like you might not have heat sealed your grosgrain after trimming...it's starting to unravel a bit. Not sure if that will be a problem for you in the long run...I always heat sear it was a lighter after cutting... just in case...

    Great work!

  • which cuben fibre did you use exactly. using your measurements i get 66gms or more for that area. your tarp is roughly 4.6yds? given 0.6oz/yd gives at least 2.8oz.

so i guess you used much lighter cuben.

oh yes, excellent video, can't wait to get started. many thanks.

  • @aikinelius

I used the 0.33 cuben fiber for the tarp and tieout reinforcements. You can find all the details of this tarp on my website under the R&D section.

  • I just subscribed to a wealth of knowledge!

Thank you very much for the information.

  • This is such a charming part of the video--getting Mom to help. Excellent how you sheepishly smile while she's all business. All hail Moms! You really hold this world together while us kids are out shivering in the cold and wet, knowing we saved 11grams on eyelets. When we come home, you have the chicken soup waiting.

  • Hahaha! Aren't mom's great! She sews my tarp and I mow her lawn. :)

  • where would we be without moms, haha.

    Nice Videos

  • nice video steve. very clear and simple.

what was your source for the cuben and thread?

  • Hi Vinovampire,

The cuben fiber material is straight from the manufacturer (Cubic Tech), but they have a 9 meter minimum - you may be able to purchase less from a distributor. The thread was purchased from Thru-Hiker. Hope that helps!

    Steve

  • Was the thread that you used synthetic?

  • The thread is Hydrophobe 100% Polyester with an Anti-Wicking Finish.

  • Hi Steve, thankyou for showing us some cuben up close and personal, good instruction, would like to of seen you under your tarp in your WLQ and Bivy. (p.s. tell Helen she has lovely finger nails.)

    from jaime

  • Hi Jaime,

Thanks for watching. I have a shot of me under the tarp on my R&D page on the suluk46 website. I really should have put it in the video for size comparison - next time.

Helen thanks you for the compliment!

    Steve

  • Fine!
